In this paper we discuss the potential usefulness of membrane systems as tools for modelling tumours. The approach is followed both from a macroscopic and a microscopic point of view. In the first case, one considers the tumour as a growing mass of cells, focusing on its external shape. In the second case, one descends to the microscopic level, studying molecular signalling pathways that are crucial to determine if a cell is cancerous or not. In each of these approaches we work with appropriate variants of membrane systems.

Background The red macroalgae Asparagopsis is an effective methanogenesis inhibitor due to the presence of halogenated methane(CH_(4))analogues,primarily bromoform(CHBr_(3)).This study aimed to investigate the degradation process of CHBr3 from A taxiformis in the rumen and whether this process is *** in vitro batch culture system was used according to a 2×2 factorial design,assessing two A taxiformis inclusion rates[0(CTL)and 2%DM diet(AT)]and two diets[high-concentrate(HC)and high-forage diet(HF)].Incubations lasted for 72 h and samples of headspace and fermentation liquid were taken at 0,0.5,1,3,6,8,12,16,24,48 and 72 h to assess the pattern of degradation of CHBr_(3) into dibromomethane(CH_(2)Br_(2))and fermentation ***,an in vitro experiment with pure cultures of seven methanogens strains(Methanobrevibacter smithii,Methanobrevibacter ruminantium,Methanosphaera stadtmanae,Methanosarcina barkeri,Methanobrevibacter millerae,Methanorhermobacter wolfei and Methanobacterium mobile)was conducted to test the effects of increasing concentrations of CHBr3(0.4,2,10and 50μmol/L).Results The addition of AT significantly decreased CH_(4) production(P=0.002)and the acetate:propionate ratio(P=0.003)during a 72-h *** concentrations of CHBr_(3) showed a rapid decrease with nearly 90%degraded within the first 3 h of *** the contrary,CH_(2)Br_(2) concentration quickly increased during the first 6 h and then gradually decreased towards the end of the *** CHBr_(3) degradation nor CH_(2)Br_(2) synthesis were affected by the type of diet used as substrate,suggesting that the fermentation rate is not a driving factor involved in CHBr_(3)*** in vitro culture of methanogens showed a dose-response effect of CHBr3 by inhibiting the growth of ***,***,***,***,***,***,and *** The present work demonstrated that CHBr_(3) from *** is quickly degrad

A simple arylhydrazone containing the benzothiazole moiety which may be used as an efficient ligand in the palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, under infrared irradiation as an alternative source of energy, is presented. The reactions proceeded with extremely high efficiency under mild conditions and produced very good yields.

This article reviews the literature concerning rheu-matic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),including common immune-mediated pathways,frequency,clinical course and therapy. Musculoskel-etal complications are frequent and well-recognized manifestations in IBD,and affect up to 33% of pa-tients with IBD. The strong link between the bowel and the osteo-articular system is suggested by many clinical and experimental observations,notably in HLA-B27 transgenic rats. The autoimmune pathogenic mechanisms shared by IBD and spondyloarthropathies include genetic susceptibility to abnormal antigen pre-sentation,aberrant recognition of self,the presence of autoantibodies against specific antigens shared by the colon and other extra-colonic tissues,and increased intestinal permeability. The response against microor-ganisms may have an important role through molecular mimicry and other mechanisms. Rheumatic mani-festations of IBD have been divided into peripheral arthritis,and axial involvement,including sacroiliitis,with or without spondylitis,similar to idiopathic anky-losing spondylitis. other periarticular features can oc-cur,including enthesopathy,tendonitis,clubbing,peri-ostitis,and granulomatous lesions of joints and *** and osteomalacia secondary to IBD and iatrogenic complications can also occur. The manage-ment of the rheumatic manifestations of IBD consists of physical therapy in combination with local injection of corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; caution is in order however,because of their possible harmful effects on intestinal integrity,perme-ability,and even on gut inflammation. Sulfasalazine,methotrexate,azathioprine,cyclosporine and lefluno-mide should be used for selected indications. In some cases,tumor necrosis factor-α blocking agents should be considered as first-line therapy.

The interest in structural health monitoring of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers using electrical methods to detect damage in structures is growing because once the material is fabricated the evaluation of strain and damage is simple and *** order to obtain the conductivity,the polymer matrix must be conductive and the use of nanoreinforcement seems to be the most feasible *** this work,the behavior of nanoreinforced polymer with carbon nanotubes(CNTs)and composites with glass and carbon fibers with nanoreinforced matrices was *** composites were evaluated in tensile tests by simultaneously measuring stress,strain and *** elastic deformation,a linear increase in resistance was observed and during fracture of the composite fibers,stronger and discontinuous changes in the resistivity were *** other factors,the percentage of nanotubes incorporated in the matrix turned out to be an important factor in the sensitivity of the method.

AIMTo analyse the impact of octogenarian donors in liver *** present a retrospective single-center study, performed between November 1996 and March 2015, that comprises a sample of 153 liver transplants. Recipients were divided into two groups according to liver donor age: recipients of donors ≤ 65 years (group A; n = 102), and recipients of donors ≥ 80 years (group B; n = 51). A comparative analysis between the groups was performed. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean values and SD, and qualitative variables as percentages. Differences in properties between qualitative variables were assessed by χ2 test. Comparison of quantitative variables was made by t-test. Graft and patient survivals were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier ***, 3 and 5-year overall patient survival was 87.3%, 84% and 75.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 88.2%, 84.1% and 66.4%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.748). one, 3 and 5-year overall graft survival was 84.3%, 83.1% and 74.2%, respectively, in recipients of younger grafts vs 84.3%, 79.4% and 64.2%, respectively, in recipients of octogenarian grafts (P = 0.524). After excluding the patients with hepatitis C virus cirrhosis (16 in group A and 10 in group B), the 1, 3 and 5-year patient (P = 0.657) and graft (P = 0.419) survivals were practically the same in both groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that overall patient survival was adversely affected by cerebrovascular donor death, hepatocarcinoma, and recipient preoperative bilirubin, and overall graft survival was adversely influenced by cerebrovascular donor death, and recipient preoperative *** standard criteria for utilization of octogenarian liver grafts are: normal gross appearance and consistency, normal or almost normal liver tests, hemodynamic stability with use of of vasopressors before procurement, intensive care unit s
