Backgro.nd: Human Immuno.eficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndro.e (AIDS) has afflicted perso.s o. all ages leading to.increase spread o. the virus. This study attempts to.determine the prevalence o. HIV infectio. amo.g 50 years o. age and abo.e o.er the five years o. study in Nnewi, Nigeria. Metho.s: Males and females who.were 50 years and abo.e who.underwent HCT in Nnewi between January 2008 to.No.ember 2012 were co.nseled and tested fo. HIV antibo.ies after giving an o.al co.sent. Results: o. the 57,090 clients o.fered HCT, 4384 (7.7%) were 50 years and abo.e while 52,706 (92.3%) were 15 - 49 years o. age. The crude HIV prevalence was 8.2%. HIV infectio. in the 50 - 59 years o. age was 2.4 times higher than that in the 60 years o. age and abo.e. A higher prevalence was o.served in females (8.8%) co.pared with 7.8% in males in o.r study. No.female 75 years and o.er was fo.nd to.have HIV infectio. in o.r study (0%) while males in the same age gro.p had a prevalence o. 3.0%. The prevalence in o.r study was higher co.pared to.the 2010 ANC sentinel survey (8.7%) in Anambra state. Co.clusio.: o.r findings sho. that o.fering HCT ro.tinely is feasible and may increase linkage to.HIV care and treatment fo. many individuals with HIV infectio.s. Ro.tine HCT sho.ld be an integral co.po.ent o. any expansio. in HIV preventio., care and treatment services in Africa and o.her settings where the prevalence o. HIV is high. Ho.se to.ho.se HIV testing will impro.e uptake o. testing amo.g o.der po.ulatio. in develo.ing co.ntries.
