o.jectives: To.identify causes o. lo. visio. amo.g the patients in the Eye clinic o. University o. Nigeria Teaching Ho.pital (UNTH). Metho.s: This was a cro.s-sectio.al study o. all new co.secutive lo. visio. patients seen at the eye clinic o. University o. Nigeria Teaching Ho.pital-(UNTH) Ituku-o.alla. All patients with lo. visio. were evaluated by the researcher and the findings entered o. a research pro.o.o.. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to.generate frequency and percentage distributio.s and analytical statistics to.test fo. significance o. o.served inter-gro.p differences. In all co.pariso.s, statistical significance was indicated by p o.al o. 197 patients were seen co.prising o. 120 males and 77 females (M:F = 1.6:1) aged 39.3 ± 22.9 SD years. The main causes o. lo. visio. in the study po.ulatio. were glauco.a (36.0%), fo.lo.ed by o.ulo.utaneo.s albinism (14.7%). The mean presenting distant VA was lo.MAR 1.1 (95% CI), while the mean near VA is lo.Mar 1.0 (6/60, 20/200). After refractio., the mean distant VA was lo.Mar 1.0, using unpaired t-test, the difference between the distant presenting and refracted VA were no. statistically significant. 57.9% had distant VA after o.tical lo. visio. assessment o. lo.Mar 0.9 - lo.Mar - 0.2 while the mean distant VA was lo.Mar 0.8 which was statistically significant. Near visio. after o.tical assessment impro.ed with a mean o. lo.Mar 0.8, which was statistically significant. Co.clusio.: Glauco.a was the co.mo.est cause o. lo. visio. in this study. o.tical lo. visio. aids impro.ed the visual functio.s o. majo.ity o. the patients in this study.

The use o. cyanidin as a metallo.hro.ic agent in analyses o. heavy metal is repo.ted. Cyanidin is a ligand that was extracted fro. Gmelina arbo.ea fruit and characterized. The cyanidin was used to.fo.m co.plexes with metals in five fish samples fo. the quantitative determinatio. o. Cu, Zn, Ca and Mg. The o.timum pH fo. abso.bances o. the cyanidin-metal co.plexes was o.served at 5. Experimental results o.tained using cyanidin were co.pared with analyses results o.tained by Ato.ic abso.ptio. spectro.ho.o.etry (AAS) and bo.h metho.s were evaluated using paired T-test to.ascertain the suitability o. cyanidin as metallo.hro.ic agent fo. the quantitative determinatio. o. heavy metals in fish samples. A null hypo.hesis that cyanidin metho. is a go.d alternative to.AAS was accepted fo. the analyses o. Cu and Zn (p > 0.05). Awareness, kno.ledge, beliefs and the so.io.ultural and religio.s practices, are believed to.influence the treatment-seeking behavio. o. peo.le as well as their uptake o. services. This study was carried o.t to.assess the awareness and kno.ledge abo.t glauco.a, and the attitude to.glauco.a screening in Ncho.ko.village in Igbeagu co.munity, Izzi Lo.al Go.ernment Area, Ebo.yi State, Nigeria. This was a cro.s-sectio.al descriptive study. Data were co.lected using an interviewer-administered questio.naire and analyzed using SPSS 22. Results sho. that a to.al o. 402 respo.dents— 228 (56.7%) wo.en and 174 (43.3%) men—were interviewed. The mean age o. respo.dents was 31.7 ± 11.9 years;82.8% o. the respo.dents had seco.dary educatio. o. less;53% were married;and 38.1% were farmers. o.ly 21.1% o. the respo.dents were aware o. glauco.a. Gender, educatio., and po.itive family histo.y were significantly asso.iated with awareness. o.ly 6.3% o. the respo.dents had go.d kno.ledge abo.t the disease. A large pro.o.tio. o. respo.dents (62.1%) exhibited a po.itive attitude to.ards glauco.a screening;ho.ever, o.ly 5% had ever undergo.e glauco.a screening. We co.clude that glauco.a awareness and kno.ledge were po.r in this rural co.munity, but a high pro.o.tio. o. respo.dents had a po.itive attitude to.ards glauco.a screening. We therefo.e reco.mend a fo.used co.munity health educatio. campaign that will raise awareness and impart adequate kno.ledge abo.t glauco.a. Eye care pro.iders sho.ld make use o. every o.po.tunity to.co.vey info.matio. o. glauco.a to.patients.

To.mo.ify the Passive Haemagglutinatio. (PHA) test, a rapid test, used fo. qauntitative detectio. o. viral antibo.ies, so.that it can be used fo. determinatio. o. viral titres, dilutio.s o. Infectio.s Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) were used to.sensitize the Red Blo.d Cells (RBCs) befo.e reacting them with kno.n IBD serum. Also. to.impro.e sensitivity o. the test, different RBC co.centratio.s were used fo. the test. A standard IBDV gave po.itive PHA reactio. upto.its 1:2048 dilutio.. With different IBDV samples, po.itive PHA reactio.s o.cured upto.dilutio.s, ranging fro. 1:16 to.1:4096. Different RBC co.centratio.s gave different titres fo. same IBDV samples. With 0.6% and 0.2% RBC co.centratio.s, mean PHA titres o. IBDV samples increased fro. 454. 85 ± 315.32 to.2396.57 ± 489.55 (p o.cluded that PHA can be ado.ted fo. evaluatio. o. viral titres. To.impro.e sensitivity o. the test, use o. 0.2% RBC is reco.mended.

To.determine passive haemagglutinatio. (PHA) antibo.y titer that wo.ld pro.ect chicks against Nigerian iso.ates o. the Infectio.s Bursa Disease Virus (IBDV), five gro.ps o. chicks aged 30 days which had different antibo.y titers were challenged with a Nigerian iso.ate o. virulent IBDV. Mo.tality rates o. the different gro.ps were plo.ted against their respective mean PHA antibo.y titers. A gro.p with zero.antibo.y titer had a mo.tality rate o. 75% while tho.e with PHA antibo.y titers o. 185.6, 243.2, 256 and 307.2 had mo.tality rates o. 40%, zero. zero.and zero.respectively. Linear equatio. generated fo. a line o. best fit o. the graph o. mo.tality rates o. the chicks o. their IBD antibo.y titers gave antibo.y titer (X) at which mo.tality (Y) wo.ld be zero.as 300. A mo.tality o. 75% and the high antibo.y level needed to.pro.ect chicks suggest that the iso.ate may be a hypervirulent strain.

Mo.t co.ventio.al ceramic based aluminum metal matrix co.po.ites(MMCs) are either heavy,co.tly o. co.binatio. o. bo.h. In o.der to.reduce co.t and weight,while at the same time maintaining quality,co. ho.n particles(CHp) was used with aluminum allo. A356 to.pro.uce MMC fo. brake drum applicatio. and o.her engineering uses. The aim o. this research is to.mo.el the age hardening pro.ess o. the pro.uced co.po.ite using respo.se surface metho.o.o.y(RSM) and artificial neural netwo.k(ANN),and to.use the develo.ed ANN as fitness functio. fo. a simulated annealing o.timizatio. algo.ithm(SA-NN system) fo. o.timizatio. o. age hardening pro.ess parameters. The results sho. that ANN mo.eled the age hardening data excellently and better than RSM with a co.relatio. co.fficient o. experimental respo.se with ANN predictio.s being 0.9921 as against 0.9583 fo. the RSM. The SA-NN system o.timized pro.ess parameters were in very clo.e agreement with the experimental values with the maximum relative erro. o. 1.2%,minimum o. 0.35% and average o. 0.71%.
