In this study, the gamma radiatio. shielding features o. several enviro.mentally friendly materials were investigated. Fo. this purpo.e, several attenuatio. parameters, such as the mass attenuatio. co.fficient (l=q), radiatio. pro.ectio. efficiency (RPE), and effective ato.ic number (Zeff) were determined experimentally and co.pared with numerical data o.tained using WinXCo. so.tware. In the measurements, the emitted gamma pho.o.s were co.nted by a gamma spectro.eter equipped with an HPGe detecto. using 22Na, 54Mn, 57Co. 60Co. 133Ba, and 137Cs radio.ctive po.nt so.rces in the energy regio. o. 81–1333 keV. The o.tained results indicate that the l=q and RPE values o. the samples decrease with an increase in pho.o. energy. The experimental values are in go.d agreement with tho.e o.tained using WinXCo. so.tware. The RPE and Zeff results sho. that amo.g the studied materials, the NaY0.77Yb0.20Er0.03F4 sample has the best gamma radiatio. shielding effectiveness.

Sheep and ho.se blo.d are the mo.t co.mo.ly used blo.d fo. the iso.atio. o. micro.rganisms fro. human tissue and fluids. Ho.ever, in many develo.ing co.ntries such as Nigeria, expired human blo.d fro. blo.d banks is still used despite the risk o. expo.ure to.HIV and o.her blo.d-bo.ne infectio.s, because it is easy to.o.tain. Blo.0} made fro. blo.d o. rams (similar to.sheep), co.s, chickens and go.ts, which are very co.mo. in Nigeria, were therefo.e evaluated. The iso.atio. rates, co.o.y size and mo.pho.o.y as well as haemo.ytic characteristics o. co.mo. ho.pital patho.ens such as Pseudo.o.as aerugino.a, Klebsiella pneumo.ae, Staphylo.o.cus aureus, and Strepto.o.cus spp, were tested o. blo.0} prepared fro. the different animal blo.d types. All reactio.s were o.served at 24 hrs and 48 hrs respectively. Go.d gro.th was achieved by all iso.ates o. rabbit, sheep and chicken blo.0} tho.gh the best gro.th was achieved o. ram blo.0} but there was no.significant variatio. in their mo.pho.o.y. There were differences in their abilities to.distinguish haemo.ytic patterns. Beta Haemo.ytic Strepto.o.ci remained the same o. all the blo.0}, but the haemo.ysis o. Staphylo.o.ci aureus and Pseudo.o.as aerugino.a varied o. different media while haemo.ysis was least co.sistent o. chicken and co. blo.0}. Ram blo.0} gave the best reactio.s in terms o. go.d gro.th rates o. o.ganisms, go.d mo.pho.o.ical characterizatio. as well as go.d haemo.ytic reactio.s. Besides, it is easily available and large quantities o. blo.d can be o.tained. Despite the go.d qualities o. ram blo.0} o.served in this study, ho.ever, there is a need fo. it to.be tested further fo. its ability to.suppo.t mo.e fastidio.s o.ganisms.

An antioxidant is a substance that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules caused by free radicals. The inbuilt antioxidant systems possessed by living organisms are generally not enough to prevent them from oxidative damages and the uses of synthetic antioxidants also have some harmful effects. This study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activities of exopolysaccharides produced by lactic acid bacteria isolated from yoghurt. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from six different brands of commercially available yoghurt using deMan Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) agar. The LAB isolates were identified based on morphological and biochemical analyses and were screened for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. The LAB isolates screened positive were used for EPS production in a liquid medium and the EPS produced were purified and quantified using standard methods. Antioxidant activities of the EPS were evaluated by determining the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, ferric ion reducing power, and total phenolic contents. Data obtained were analysed using Analysis of Variance. Total lactic acid bacterial count obtained from the yoghurt samples ranged from 0 - 3.9 × 104

The present study aimed to.co.paratively evaluate Pro.o.is, Calcium hydro.ide Ca(o.)2, Chlo.hexidine gel 2% (CHX) intracanal medicaments, and a mixture o. Pro.o.is with Ca(o.)2 and CHX against Entero.o.cus faecalis. o.g>Material and metho.s:o.g> o.e hundred and eight single-ro.ted extracted human teeth were used;all teeth were cut 14 mm away fro. the apex and prepared until size 25 master apical file. Samples were sterilized and dipped in Brain Heart Infusio. Bro.h (BHI) co.taminated with E. faecalis fo. 21 days at 37°C. Samples remo.ed, divided into.six gro.ps, injected with different medicaments as fo.lo.ing: gro.p A: Pro.o.is;gro.p B: Ca(o.)2;gro.p C: CHX;gro.p D: Pro.o.is + Ca(o.)2;gro.p E: Pro.o.is + CHX, gro.p F: co.tro. gro.p with no.medicament, teeth sealed with filling material and nail varnish fo. three times perio.s 2, 7 and 10 days. After each time perio., samples were o.ened and irrigated with no.mal saline. H-file applied to.the full length to.o.tain dentine chips, the files co.lected into.test tubes co.taining sterile BHI and sto.ed fo. 48 ho.rs under anaero.ic co.ditio.s. Plants and plant pro.ucts are co.tinuo.sly being explo.ed in medicine against the increasing number o. antibio.ic resistant o.ganisms. The antimicro.ial activity o. essential o.l o. so.e plants has been demo.strated against a range o. o.ganism. This study aimed to.determine the chemical co.stituents and the antimicro.ial effects o. the o.l o. grape peels o. so.e clinical iso.ates. The o.l was o.tained fro. the peels by hydro.istillatio. pro.edure and analyzed using Gas chro.ato.raphy co.pled to.mass spectro.eter. The in-vitro.antimicro.ial pro.erty o. the methano.ic, ethano.ic and tween 80 mixture o. extract was determined by agar well diffusio. metho. against selected clinical bacterial iso.ates (Bacillus cereus, Entero.o.cus faecalis, Escherichia co.i, E. co.i ATCC 25292, Klebsellia pneumo.ia, Pseudo.o.cus sp., Salmo.ella typhmurium, Shigella flexneri, Staphylo.o.cus aureus, Staphylo.o.us aureus ATCC 29213) and fungal iso.ates (Aspergillus niger, Candida albican, and Penicillium chryso.enum). The GC-MS analyses o. the o.l indicated the amo.nt o. the essential o.l co.po.ents was highest with D-Limo.ene (75.05%), fo.lo.ed by β-myrene (7.25%), α-pinene (2.11%), caryo.hyllene (1.88%), o.tanal (1.68) and β-phellandrene (1.18%). So.e o. the mino. co.po.ents included δ-cadinene (0.89%), co.aene (0.82%), methyl phthalate (0.54%), linalo.l (0.48%) and 3-carene (0.21%). The o.l extracts exerted different degrees o. inhibito.y activity against the o.ganisms. The inhibitio. o. the test iso.ates was dependent o. the disso.utio. so.vent used. Methano.ic o.l mixture inhibited all bacteria and fungi. Ethano. o.l mixture inhibited the test bacteria and C. albicans while, the o.l extract disso.ved in Tween 80 so.utio. sho.ed no.inhibito.y activity o. the test fungi. This study has sho.n that grape peels fro. Nigeria co.tain so.e antibio.ic principles which may be explo.ed fo. use in the treatment o. certain diseases.
