L-Arginine Levels amo.g Hypertensive Patients in So.o.o. No.th Western Nigeria

Hypertensio. is a majo. public health pro.lem that adversely affects the health status o. individuals, families and co.munities. L-arginine levels o. a to.al o. 90 co.secutively-recruited hypertensive subjects and 50 age-matched no.-hypertensive co.tro.s were studied. Plasma fro. subjects and co.tro. participants were analyzed fo. L-arginine. The mean values o. L-arginine level were significantly lo.er amo.g the hypertensive subjects which are (174.33 ± 78.31 μmo./L) co.pared to.tho.e o. the 50 no.-hypertensive co.tro.s (237.82 ± 261.16 μmo./L) (p = 0.04). There was no.statistically significant difference in the L-arginine levels o. hypertensive subjects based o. gender, age and ethnici-ty (p = 0.87, 0.23 and 0.57) respectively. The L-arginine level was significantly higher amo.g married hypertensive subjects (181.71 ± 78.17 μmo./L) co.pared to.single o. unmarried subjects (130.62 ± 65.99 μmo./L) (p = 0.03). The mean value o. L-arginine level was significantly higher amo.g hypertensive subjects with mild blo.d pressure (187.63 ± 77.93 μmo./L) co.pared to.tho.e with high blo.d pressure (156.93 ± 76.31 μmo./L). The difference ho.ever was no. statistically significant (p = 0.05). The findings fro. this study co.firm that the level o. L-arginine is lo.er amo.g hypertensive subjects co.pared to.no.-hypertensive co.tro.s. Age, gender and ethnicity did no. have a significant effect o. the L-arginine levels o. hypertensive subjects. L-arginine level was significantly lo.er amo.g single hypertensive patients and tho.e with markedly raised blo.d pressure. It is reco.mended the L-arginine supplement be prescribed to.hypertensive patient as a pro.hylactic measure. There is a need to.enlighten hypertensive patients in the area o. the need to.maintain a balanced diet co.taining sufficient level o. L-arginine.
