Smoking cessation prior to elective total joint arthroplasty results in sustained abstinence postoperatively

BACKGRoUND Tobacco use is a well-documented modifiable risk factor for perioperative *** To determine the tobacco abstinence rates of patients who made cessation efforts prior to a total joint arthroplasty(TJA)*** A retrospective evaluation was performed on 88 self-reported tobacco users who underwent TJA between 2014-2022 and had tobacco cessation dates within 3 mo of *** patients were contacted via phone survey to understand their tobacco use pattern,and patient reported outcomes.A total of 37 TJA patients *** our cohort was on average 61-years-old,60%(n=22)women,with an average body mass index of 30 kg/m^(2).The average follow-up time was 2.9±1.9 years.A total of 73.0%(n=27)of patients endorsed complete abstinence from tobacco use prior to *** cessation methods were used perioperatively including prescription therapy(13.5%),over the counter nicotine replacement(18.9%),cessation programs(5.4%).At final follow up,43.2%(n=16)of prior tobacco smokers reported complete *** who were able to maintain cessation postoperatively had improved Patient-Reported outcomes Measurement Information System(PRoMIS)-10 mental health scores(49 vs 58;P=0.01),and hip dysfunction and osteoarthritis outcome score for joint replacement(***)scores(63 vs 82;P=0.02).No patients in this cohort had a prosthetic joint infection or required revision *** We report a tobacco cessation rate of 43.2%in patients undergoing elective TJA nearly 3 years *** undergoing TJA who were able to remain abstinent had improved PRoMIS-10 mental health scores and *** *** perioperative period provides clinicians a unique opportunity to assist active tobacco smokers with cessation efforts and improve postoperative outcomes.

The contribution of botanic gardens to ex situ conservation through seed banking

Target 8 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation calls for 'at least 75 per cent of threatened plant species in ex situ collections, preferably in the country of origin, and at least 20 per cent available for recovery and restoration programmes by 2020'.Botanic gardens make a significant contribution to ex situ conservation of wild species with more than a third of plant species represented in botanic gardens collections. These collections are a combination of living collection and seed banked material. Seed banking can provide an efficient form of conservation for wild plant genetic *** from Botanic Gardens Conservation International's(BGCI) databases(GardenSearch,PlantSearch, ThreatSearch and GlobalTreeSearch) has been analysed as well as survey data to report on global, regional and national seed banking *** from BGCI's databases indicates that there are at least 350 seed banking botanic gardens in 74 countries. In total 56,987 taxa have been banked including more than 9000 taxa that are threatened with extinction. 6881 tree species are stored in ex situ seed bank collections. More than half(3562) of these tree species are single country endemics and represent species from more than 166 *** study suggests that institutions are increasingly conserving plant species via seed *** the majority of species in collections that have a conservation assessment are not threatened with extinction. This disjunction between species that are threatened and those conserved in seed banks needs to be addressed. Data from BGCI's databases can be used to enable prioritisation of threatened plant species for collection and conservation in seed banks. Further recommendations for botanic gardens involved in seed conservation are presented.

Renewable generation interfaced through gridforming converters are proposed as a replacement for synchronous generators in power ***,compared to the synchronous generator,the power electronics converter has a strict limit on the current to avoid overcurrent *** gridforming converter acts like a voltage source,directily controlling the *** conflicts with the operation of the conventional current limit control,which is applied to a current *** switch between the voltage control and current control aimed to impose the current limit leads to synchronization *** paper proposes a novel control scheme which can be applied to the grid forming voltage control in order to enforce current *** proposed method has been verified through simulation and hardware tests in both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults to perform current suppression while maintaining synchronization stability in the voltage control mode.

A virtual synchronous generator(VSG)control has been proposed as a means to control a voltage source converter interfaced generation and storage to retain the dynamics of a conventional synchronous *** storage is used to provide the inertia power and droop power in the VSG control to improve the frequency *** the parameters in the VSG control can be varied,it is necessary for it to be tuned to be adaptive,in order to achieve an optimal response to grid frequency ***,the storage cannot provide infinite power and the converter has a strict power limitation which must be *** adaptive VSG control should consider these limitations,which have not been considered *** paper proposes an adaptive VSG control aimed at obtaining the optimal grid supporting services during frequency transients,accounting for converter and storage capacity *** proposed control has been validated via hardware-in-the-loop *** is then implemented in storage co-located with wind farms in a modified IEEE 39-bus *** results show that the proposed control stabilizes the system faster and has better cooperation with other VSGs,considering storage and converter limits.

Isothermal compression tests were conducted to predict the hot deformational flow stress behaviour of 2024AI-T3 alloy with respect to a wide range of strain rates （0.001-100 s l）, strains （0.1-0.5） and temperatures （573-773 K）. The prediction capabilities of various constitutive models for 2024A1 alloys and a recently developed constitutive model were evaluated using statistical parameters such as the average absolute relative error （AARE） and the correlation coefficient （R）. Models recorded the lowest AARE （4.6%） and the highest correlation coefficient （R=0.99） were developed compared with the other models. Hence, this model can track the deformational behaviour of 2027Al-T3 alloy more accurately compared with other models throughout the entire processing domain investigated.

Black flies are ubiquitous and important members of lotic *** is known to affect many aspects of their life in the aquatic larval stage,including intraspecific competition for feeding *** filter feeders,flow affects their ability to feed and reach sufficiently fast ***,in turn,can lead to risky fluid-mediated disper-sal behavior in search of better *** is surprising,therefore,that little information is available regard-ing how physiological and environmental factors combine to affect larval growth *** present study deter-mines the relative growth rates of small(0.6 mm)and large(approximately 4 mm)larvae in laboratory flumes designed to produce spatially homogeneous and temporally consistent flow regimes at ecologically relevant ve-locities(44 and 64 cm/s).our results indicate that size and flow both influence growth rates and that the 2 in-teract *** larvae exhibit faster growth rates and a greater positive response to increased flow *** result might help explain why smaller larvae have a greater propensity to disperse than larger lar-vae:the benefit of increased growth rate that they receive from relocating to faster flow might balance the risks inherent in dispersal.

AIM: To determine if hyperpolarisation-activated nucleotide-gated(HCN) channels exist in human colon, and to investigate the expression of HCN channels in Hirschsprung's ***:We investigated HCN1,HCN2,HCN3 and HCN4 protein expression in pull-through specimens from patients with Hirschsprung’s disease(HSCR,n=10)using the proximal-most ganglionic segment and distalmost aganglionic segment,as well as in healthy control specimens obtained at the time of sigmoid colostomy closure in children who had undergone anorectoplasty for imperforate anus(n=10).Fluorescent immunohistochemistry was performed to assess protein distribution,which was then visualized using confocal ***:No HCN1 channel expression was observed in any of the tissues *** HCN2 and HCN4proteins were found to be equally expressed in the aganglionic and ganglionic bowel in HSCR and ***3 channel expression was found to be markedly decreased in the aganglionic colon vs ganglionic colon and ***2-4 channels were seen to be expressed within neurons of the myenteric and submucosal plexus of the ganglionic bowel and normal controls,and also co-localised to interstitial cells of Cajal in all tissues ***:We demonstrate HCN channel expression in human colon for the first *** HCN3expression in aganglionic bowel suggests its potential role in HSCR pathophysiology.
