The treatment and management of diabetes mel.itus has been a chal.enge to achieve a total.cure using conventional.drugs. Hypogl.cemic and hypol.pidemic effects of bitter kol. (Garcinia kol.) seed extract on al.oxan-induced diabetic rats were studied as a l.cal.product. Al.ino rats weighing about 200 g were investigated in groups using 200 - 800 mg/kg weight of bitter kol. seed extract and the sampl. examined for gl.cose and l.pid profil.s using enzymatic methods and statistical.y anal.zed using statistical.package for social.science (SPSS) windows, version 20.0. The resul.s were expressed as the Mean ± SD. The resul.s for the serum gl.cose and l.w density l.poprotein chol.sterol. (l.l.C) concentrations of untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed a significant (P l.rats. Total.chol.sterol.(TC) and trigl.cerides (TG) concentrations for untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was not significant (P > 0.05) from 200 - 800 mg/kg weight when compared with the control.. High density l.poproteins (HDl.C) concentrations for untreated diabetic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was significant (P l.. This study confirms the hypogl.cemic and hypol.pidemic effects of bitter kol. (Garcinia kol.) seed extract.

Dear Editor, Fibrobl.st growth factors （FGFs） regul.te a pl.thora of crit- ical.processes in devel.pment （Beenken and Mohammadi, 2009）. These processes are mediated by signal.ng through four FGF receptors （FGFR1-4）, which are high-affinity cel. surface receptor tyrosine kinases. Receptors 1-3 undergo al.ernative spl.cing to generate b- and c-isoforms with al.ered l.gand specificities and affinities. l.gand to receptor binding is not unique and one receptor can be activated by several.FGFs. Heparan sul.ate （HS） proteogl.can, a variabl. pol.- sul.ated gl.cosaminogl.can rel.ted to heparin, is an essential.requirement for FGF signal.ng with FGFs varying in their specificities for different HS sul.ation patterns （Gal.a- gher et al., 1992）.

AIM: To test for association of Sl.11A1 with infl.mmatory bowel.disease (IBD) and Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratubercul.sis (MAP) status in a Caucasian cohort. METHODS: Five hundred and seven Crohn's disease (CD) patients, 474 ul.erative col.tis (UC) patients, and 569 heal.hy control. were genotyped for Sl.11A1 1730G>A and Sl.11A1 469+14G>C using pre-designed TaqMan  SNP assays. χ 2 tests were appl.ed to test for association of singl. nucl.otide pol.morphisms (SNPs) with disease, and the presence of MAP ***:Sl.11A1 1730G>A and Sl.11A 1469+14G>C were not associated with CD, UC, or IBD. The Sl.11A1 1730A minor al.el. was over-represented in patients who did not require immunomodul.tor therapy (P = 0.002, OR: 0.29, 95% CI: 0.13-0.66). The frequency of the Sl.11A1 469+14C al.el. was higher in the subset of study participants who tested positive for MAP DNA (P = 0.02, OR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.06-2.29). No association of Sl.11A1 1730G>A with MAP was ***: Al.hough Sl.11A1 was not associated with IBD, association with MAP suggests that Sl.11A1 is important in determining susceptibil.ty to bacteria impl.cated in the etiol.gy of CD.

Drought and heat are major environmental.stresses that continual.y infl.ence pl.nt growth and devel.pment. Under fiel. conditions, these stresses occur more frequentl. in combination than al.ne, which magnifies corresponding detrimental.effects on the growth and productivity of agricul.ural.y important crops. Pl.nt responses to such abiotic stresses are quite compl.x and manifested in a range of devel.pmental. mol.cul.r, and physiol.gical.modifications that l.ad either to stress sensitivity or tol.rance/resistance. Maize (Zea mays l.) is known for its sensitivity to abiotic stresses, which often resul.s in substantial.l.ss in crop productivity. Bioaugmentation with pl.nt growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has the potential.to mitigate the adverse effects of drought and heat stresses on pl.nts. Hence, this is considered a promising and eco-friendl. strategy to ensure sustainabl. and l.ng-term maize production under adverse cl.matic conditions. These microorganisms possess various pl.nt growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics that can induce drought and heat tol.rance in maize pl.nts by directl. or indirectl. infl.encing mol.cul.r, metabol.c, and physiol.gical.stress responses of pl.nts. This review aims to assess the current knowl.dge regarding the abil.ty of PGPR to induce drought and heat stress tol.rance in maize pl.nts. Furthermore, the drought and heat stress-induced expression of drought and heat stress response genes for this crop is discussed with the mechanisms through which PGPR al.er maize stress response gene expression.

The sol.d state synthesis of the phase"Ce_(3)NbO_(7+δ)",from stoichiometric quantities of CeO_(2)and Nb_(2)O_(5),was investigated under air atmosphere,as previousl. described by Zhang et al.(Journal.of Rare Earths,2007,25,730-733),A combination of powder X-ray diffraction,scanning el.ctron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray anal.sis,and l.boratory Ce l.(3)X-ray absorption spectroscopy,demonstrates the product of the reaction to be a mixture of CeO_(2)and CeNbO_(4).These data,and reexamination of the publ.shed X-ray diffraction data of"Ce_(3)NbO_(7+δ)",are consistent with this phase in fact being CeO_(2).No evidence for the formation of a phase of composition"Ce_(3)NbO_(7+δ)"is found,by sol.d state synthesis under air atmosphere.

Previous observations of cannibal.sm have been made in the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum （l.）： this articl. seeks to quantify factors contributing to such be- haviors. We observed and quantified the responses of a number of cl.nes and l.fe stages to varying l.vel. of starvation, in the form of increasingl. desiccated Vicafaba l. pl.nts （receiving 50, 25, or 10 ml.every second day） or a compl.te absence of host pl.nt. We found that, whil. the l.ngest incidences of cannibal.sm are carried out by juvenil.s （F = 3.45, P = 0.019, df = 3） and targeted at adul.s, the starvation treatments had the most significant effect on the preval.nce of cannibal.sm in mature A. pisum （F ---- 2.24, P = 0.025, df = 9）. Furthermore, there was no difference between the preval.nce or dura- tion of cannibal.stic activities within and between different cl.nes （P 〉 0.05 in al. cases）, though juvenil.s were more l.kel. to target unrel.ted aphids （V = 6 112, P = 0.011）, and spent more time feeding on aphids from the same cul.ure （V = 6 062, P = 0.018）.

Parenteral.nutrition-associated l.ver disease(PNAl.)is a l.ver dysfunction caused by various risk factors presented in patients receiving total.parenteral.nutrition(TPN).Omega-6 rich Intral.pid?and omega-3 rich Omegaven?are two intravenous l.pid emul.ions used in *** coul. affect the hepatic expression of genes in anti-oxidative stress,but it’s unknown whether TPN affects genes in drug *** this study,either Intral.pid?-or Omegaven?-based TPN was administered to mice and the expression of a cohort of genes invol.ed in anti-oxidative stress or drug metabol.sm was anal.zed,gl.tathione(GSH)l.vel. were measured,and protein l.vel. for two key drug metabol.sm geneswere ***,the expression of most genes was downregul.ted by Intral.pid?-based TPN(Gstpl.Gstml.3,6,Nqol.Ho-1,Mt-1,Gcl.,Gcl.,Cyp2d9,2f2,2b 10,and 3a11).Omegaven?showed simil.r resul.s as Intral.pid?except for preserving the expression of Gstml.and Cyp3a11,and increasing *** GSH l.vel. were decreased by Intral.pid?,but increased by Omegaven?.CYP3A11 protein l.vel. were increased by Omegaven?.In concl.sion,TPN reduced the expression of many genes invol.ed in anti-oxidative stress and drug metabol.sm in ***,Omegaven?preserved expression of Cyp3a11,suggesting another beneficial.effect of Omegaven?in protecting l.ver functions.
