Paediatric Cancer Care in Abakaliki South-East Nigeria: Challenges and Outcome

The care of children with malignancy is almost always a feat and is even more difficult in resource-poor settings such as our country Nigeria where several factors present as challenges as seen in other countries of sub-Saharan *** this study,we present our experience in AEFUTHA,over a six-year *** study aimed at finding out the current prevalence,outcomes and challenging issues leading to poor *** retrospective study spanned from January 2012 to December *** was extracted from the patients’case notes using a structured data *** aged 17 years and below who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria were studied and the sample size was *** our study,the prevalence of paediatric malignancy is 2.0%.The outcome was generally poor with a mortality rate of 30.9%,and 60.3%having abandoned treatment at various stages of *** top-ranking challenges noted included diagnostic problems and late presentation accounting for 19.8%and 17.3%respectively and,poverty and lack of effective treatment and drugs representing 16.0%*** conclude that there is a need to adopt a multifaceted approach to tackling these challenges to improve outcomes.

Paediatric Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria: A Report of Two Cases

Background: Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disorder with BCR/ABL mutation characterized by proliferation of granulocytic cell lines at varying stages of development. It is predominantly a disease of the adult population, only accounting for 2-3% of all childhood leukaemia. In our tertiary hospital, we recorded two cases of paediatric CML within three years. Objective: To increase the awareness of physicians on this seemingly rare form of childhood leukaemia. Case reports: We report a 10 year-old boy and a 16 year-old girl who presented to our facility with features suggestive of CML. Both cases had splenomegaly and leucocytosis. Cytogenetic assessment was positive for BCR-ABL in both cases. The first case was in chronic phase (CP) and had an initial therapy of hydroxyurea (HU) before referral for imatinib therapy. The second case received imatinib therapy, however due to blastic transformation to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), she received treatment comprising of intravenous anthracycline and cytarabine. Conclusion: CML, although one of the rare childhood leukaemia is becoming increasingly noticed, probably due to availability of diagnostic facilities. There is therefore need for increased awareness of the disease among physicians to minimize delays in the diagnosis for improved care and better outcome.

Asymptomatic malaria parasitemia does not induce additional oxidative stress in pregnant women of South East Nigeria

Objective:To determine the relationship between asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and some oxidative stress parameters in pregnant Nigerian ***:This is a cross-sectional study involving 130 normal pregnant women at various trimesters,who were attending antenatal clinic at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital(UNTH) and Kenechukwu Specialist Hospital in Enugu.A comparable group(control),made of 30 non pregnant women was also *** a 24 hour dietary recall,serum levels of vitamin A,C and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined by colorimetric method,while vitamin E was determined by absorptiometric ***:There were no statistically significant differences in age,parity,estimated calorie,vitamins A,C and E intake between the pregnant and non pregnant groups(P>0.05).The serum level of the vitamins(umol/L) and MDA(umol/L) in control,1st,2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively were:(l)Vitamin A:1.6±0.36 vs 0.6±0.26 vs 0.62±0.33 vs 0.46±0.21(P0.05). Conclusions:Asymptomatic malaria parasitemia does not induce additional oxidative stress on pregnant women in *** enormity of acute and complicated attack should be further investigated.
