Water,Nitrogen and Plant Density Affect the Response of Leaf Appearance of Direct seeded Rice to Thermal Time

Field experiments were conducted in the Ebro Delta area （spain）, from 2007 to 2009 with two rice varieties： Gleva and Tebre. The experimental treatments included a series of seed rates, two different water management systems and two different nitrogen fertilization times. The number of leaves on the main stems and their emergence time were periodically tagged. The results indicated that the final leaf number on the main stems in the two rice varieties was quite stable over a three-year period despite of the differences in their respective growth cycles. Interaction between nitrogen fertilization and water management influenced the final leaf number on the main stems. Plant density also had a significant influence on the rate of leaf appearance by extending the phyllochron and postponing the onset of intraspecific competition after the emergence of the 7th leaf on the main stems. Final leaf number on the main stems was negatively related to plant density. A relationship between leaf appearance and thermal time was established with a strong nonlinear function. In direct-seeded rice, the length of the phyllochron increases exponentially in line with the advance of plant development. A general model, derived from 2-year experimental data, was developed and satisfactorily validated; it had a root mean square error of 0.3 leaf. An exponential model can be used to predict leaf emergence in direct-seeded rice.

shorebird populations are declining worldwide,mainly due to human disturbances and loss of coastal ***,supratidal habitats as saltpans could play a role in buffering human *** have shown to be important as feeding or breeding sites of some shorebird species.A potential conservation strategy to increase shorebird populations in saltpans is to manipulate the cues that birds use to select optimal breeding *** it is hypothesized that shorebirds are attracted to bivalve shells due to the advantages they *** this hypothesis,we supplemented a restored saltpan in 2019 and 2021 with bivalve shells,expecting an increase in the number of breeding birds’ *** than 75% of Kentish Plover(Charadrius alexandrinus) and Little Tern(sternula albifrons) nests were found in patches with shells in both *** best model for both species indicates that the presence of shells is the factor that most correlates with the location of *** probability of choosing one place over another to settle their nest increases in areas with an abundance of shells,double in the case of the Kentish Plover and triple in the case of the Little *** result of this study may constitute a valuable tool for attracting birds to restored saltpans and could contribute to the success of expensive restoration projects where time is usually a constraint.

When data privacy is imposed as a necessity,Federated learning(FL)emerges as a relevant artificial intelligence field for developing machine learning(ML)models in a distributed and decentralized *** allows ML models to be trained on local devices without any need for centralized data transfer,thereby reducing both the exposure of sensitive data and the possibility of data interception by malicious third *** paradigm has gained momentum in the last few years,spurred by the plethora of real-world applications that have leveraged its ability to improve the efficiency of distributed learning and to accommodate numerous participants with their data *** virtue of FL,models can be learned from all such distributed data sources while preserving data *** aim of this paper is to provide a practical tutorial on FL,including a short methodology and a systematic analysis of existing software ***,our tutorial provides exemplary cases of study from three complementary perspectives:i)Foundations of FL,describing the main components of FL,from key elements to FL categories;ii)Implementation guidelines and exemplary cases of study,by systematically examining the functionalities provided by existing software frameworks for FL deployment,devising a methodology to design a FL scenario,and providing exemplary cases of study with source code for different ML approaches;and iii)Trends,shortly reviewing a non-exhaustive list of research directions that are under active investigation in the current FL *** ultimate purpose of this work is to establish itself as a referential work for researchers,developers,and data scientists willing to explore the capabilities of FL in practical applications.

Typhoon-and pollution-driven enhancement of reactive bromine in the mid-latitude marine boundary layer

Tropospheric reactive bromine is important for atmospheric chemistry,regional air pollution,and global *** studies have reported measurements of atmospheric reactive bromine species in different environments,and proposed their main sources,***-salt aerosol（ssA）,oceanic biogenic activity,polar snow/ice,and *** and other strong cyclonic activities（***） induce abrupt changes in different earth system processes,causing widespread destructive ***,the role of typhoons in regulating reactive bromine abundance and sources remains ***,we report field observations of bromine oxide（BrO）,a critical indicator of reactive bromine,on the Huaniao Island（HNI）in the East China sea in July *** observed high levels of BrO below 500 m with a daytime average of9.7±4.2 pptv and a peak value of ～26 pptv under the influence of a *** field measurements,supported by model simulations,suggest that the typhoon-induced drastic increase in wind speed amplifies the emission of ssA,significantly enhancing the activation of reactive bromine from ssA *** also detected enhanced BrO mixing ratios under high NOxconditions（ppbv level） suggesting a potential pollution-induced mechanism of bromine release from *** elevated levels of atmospheric bromine noticeably increase ozone destruction by as much as ～40% across the East China *** the high frequency of cyclonic activity in the northern hemisphere,reactive bromine chemistry is expected to play a more important role than previously thought in affecting coastal air quality and atmospheric oxidation *** suggest that models need to consider the hitherto overlooked typhoon-and pollution-mediated increase in reactive bromine levels when assessing the synergic effects of cyclonic activities on the earth system.

Ionic liquids as boundary additives in water-based and PAO lubricants

Ionic liquids have been widely discussed as potential lubricants,however,their properties make them also very good potential candidates as lubricant additives(e.g.,friction modifiers and anti-wear).In this work,the tribological study of two ionic liquids(tributylmethylphosphonium dimethylphosphate(PP),and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate(BMP))as lubricant additives has been performed on stainless steel(AIsI 316L)exposed to polar(water-glycol)and non-polar(polyalphaolefin)based lubricants under boundary lubricating *** performance of these ionic liquids as lubricant additives has been compared to a classical organic friction modifier(dodecanoic acid(C12)).The water–glycol lubricant formulated with the two ionic liquids showed friction values higher than the same base lubricant formulated with dodecanoic acid,however,opposite results were observed for polyalphaolefin(PAO).A detailed surface chemical analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPs)revealed differences in the passive/tribofilm thickness and chemical composition of the stainless steel surface tested in all *** the case of the polar lubricant additivated with ionic liquids,the tribochemical reaction accompanied by a tribocorrosion process led to the formation of an unstable passive/tribofilm resulting in high friction and ***,in the absence of tribocorrosion process(polyalphaolefin base lubricant),the tribochemical reaction led to the formation of a stable passive/tribofilm resulting in low friction and wear.A detailed surface and subsurface investigation of the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy equipped with a focused ion beam(sEM-FIB)showed that high wear rates resulted in thicker recrystallization region under the wear track *** all lubricant additives tested in this work,BMP in non-polar lubricant media showed the best tribological performance.

Polycaprolactone/mesoporous silica MCM-41 composites prepared by in situ polymerization

Composites of polycaprolactone （PCL） with mesoporous silica MCM-41 and N-[3- （trimethoxysilyl）propyl]-ethylenediamine （EPTEs）-functionalized MCM-41 （EPTEs/MCM-41） were prepared by in situ polymerization. The thermal properties of the composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. There was an increase in the thermal decomposition temperature of PCL by more than 55 ℃, when the EPTEs/MCM-41 loading was higher than 2 wt%. Tensile test results indicated that adding MCM-41 increased the brittleness of the PCL matrix, while adding 8 wt% of EPTEs/MCM-41 increased the Young＇s modulus by 26%. Incorporating MCM-41 increased the crystallinity of the resulting PCL composite, compared with that of PCL. Incorporating up to 5 wt% EPTEs/MCM-41 slightly reduced the crystallinity of PCL. The different effects of MCM-41 and EPTEs/MCM-41 on the composite reflected the degree of interaction and dispersion of the silica filler in the polymer matrix, as evidenced by results from transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Minimizing carbon deposition in plasma-induced methane coupling with structured hydrogenation catalysts

The effect of temperature and hydrogen addition on undesired carbonaceous deposit formation during methane coupling was studied in DBD-plasma catalytic-wall reactors with Pd/Al2 O3, using electrical power to drive the *** with thin catalyst layers allowed comparison of the performance of empty reactors and catalytic wall reactors without significantly influencing the plasma *** product distribution varies strongly in the temperature window between 25 and 200℃Minimal formation of deposits is found at an optimal temperature around 75℃ in the catalytic-wall *** selectivity to deposits was c.a.10% with only 9 mg of catalyst loading instead of 45% in the blank reactor,while decreasing methane conversion only ***-feeding H2 to an empty reactor causes a similar decrease in selectivity to deposits,but in this case methane conversion also decreased *** of deposits formation in the catalytic-wall reactor at 75℃ is due to catalytic hydrogenation of mainly acetylene to *** the empty reactor,H2 co-feed decreases conversion but does not change the product *** catalytic-wall reactors can be regenerated with H2-plasma at room temperature,which produces more added-value hydrocarbons.
