Enhancement of the benthic communities around an isolated island in the Antarctic Ocean

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen Sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sampling was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BENTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USNEL-type box corer （Bc） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. Sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. Several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. Significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Apoptosis Induced by N-Nitrosamines in Two cancer cell Lines

In the present study, we investigated the induction of apoptosis by N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) and N-nitrosodimethy-lamine (NDMA) in two human cell lines: HL-60 (leukemia) and HepG2 (hepatoma). Apoptotic cells were identified by: 1) chromatin condensation, 2) flow cytometry analysis and 3) poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage. Both cell lines exhibited morphological changes consistent with apoptotic events following treatment with N-nitrosamines. Flow cytometry analysis showed that both N-nitrosamines induced apoptotic cell death in a concentration and time dependent- manner. NPYR was stronger than NDMA, since it induced a significant apoptotic cell death after 72 h starting from a concentration of 10 mM, whereas NDMA was effective at 27 mM. Furthermore, NPYR and NDMA caused the cleavage of PARP in HL-60 cells whereas no PARP cleavage was detected in HepG2 cells. However, NPYR- and NDMA-induced cell death in HepG2 cells was prevented by specific caspase inhibitors. caspase-8 mediated main pathway and was responsible for 76% (NPYR) and 64% (NDMA) inhibition of apoptosis. The data demonstrate that NPYR and NDMA induce apoptosis in HL-60 and HepG2 cell lines via caspase-dependent pathway.

Significant cellular senescence has been observed in cartilage harvested from patients with osteoarthritis(OA).In this study,we aim to develop a senescence-relevant OA-like cartilage model for developing disease-modifying OA drugs(DMOADs).Spe-cifically,human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells(MScs)were expanded in vitro up to passage 10(P10-MScs).Following their senescent phenotype formation,P10-MScs were subjected to pellet culture in chondrogenic *** from qRT-PcR,histology,and immunostaining indicated that cartilage generated from P10-MScs displayed both senescent and OA-like phenotypes without using other OA-inducing agents,when compared to that from normal passage 4(P4)-***,the same gene expression differences observed between P4-MScs and P10-MSc-derived cartilage tissues were also observed between the preserved and damaged OA cartilage regions taken from human samples,as demonstrated by RNA sequencing data and other analysis ***,the utility of this senescence-initiated OA-like cartilage model in drug development was assessed by testing several potential DMOADs and *** results suggest that pre-existing cellular senescence can induce the generation of OA-like changes in *** P4-and P10-MScs derived cartilage models also represent a novel platform for predicting the efficacy and toxicity of potential DMOADs on both preserved and damaged cartilage in humans.

The Impact of Automation in Service Industries＂ An Empirical Study

Academic research into service industries has explored the characteristics of interpersonal interactions between employees and customers, but there are few studies addressing the issues of consumer interaction with technology and its influence on the objectives and results of the operations subsystem. This study examines the elements of the service encounter, and the changes automation originates in them and their relationships. The paper also examines changes in the elements and results of the operations subsystem, as a result of automation. We propose that the customer＇s relationship with employees and/or technology and automated systems for the service impact the objectives and results of the operations subsystem, all of which could have an effect on the company＇s competitive position. The empirical study is focused on four industries, namely, toll motorways, car parks, carwash and video/DVD rental companies, in an attempt to identify objectives that lead companies to implement automated processes affecting the customer＇s relationship with the company. The hypotheses generated are contrasted with a structural equation modelling. The results confirm that the customer＇s relationship with employees and automated systems for the service impacts the objectives and results of the operations subsystem. Also, the results show how automation can enable firms simultaneously to achieve acceptable levels of flexibility and productivity, two dimensions that have traditionally been considered opposites.

Adjuvant Taxanes in Breast cancer: A critical Re-appraisal

Purpose: Several studies have reported a positive impact for taxanes in adjuvant breast cancer (Bc) treatment in terms of reduced recurrence and mortality. However the impact of the magnitude on overall survival (OS) remains partially controversial. Methods: We examined the impact of taxane-containing adjuvant therapy for patients with early Bc on OS, based on the number of deaths and on the calculated number of patients who need to be treated with taxanes to avoid one death (NNT). We classified patients in three different groups according to whether taxanes were administered concurrently or sequentially, and whether all treatment arms had the same or different duration. Results: 1) Taxanes in combination therapy: 8258 patients (4373 with taxanes and 3885 without taxanes), with 723 OS events. Overall survival for taxane-treated patients was 92.7% versus 89.6% for patients not receiving taxanes. NNT was 33. 2) Sequential treatment of unequal duration in the treatment arms: 14,228 patients (7970 with taxanes and 6256 without). Overall survival in taxane-treated patients was 86% compared with 83.2% for patients not receiving taxanes. NNT was 44. 3) Sequential treatment and similar duration in treatment arms: 9511 women (5093 with taxanes and 4418 without). Overall survival in patients treated with taxanes was 87% versus 85% in patients not receiving taxanes. NNT was 50. When the results of all these trials were considered together, the NNT stands at 43 patients. conclusion: Taxanes afford a modest increase in overall survival in Bc patients regardless of how they are given. Translational trials may well help to improve patient selection in the future.

Water,Nitrogen and Plant Density Affect the Response of Leaf Appearance of Direct Seeded Rice to Thermal Time

Field experiments were conducted in the Ebro Delta area （Spain）, from 2007 to 2009 with two rice varieties： Gleva and Tebre. The experimental treatments included a series of seed rates, two different water management systems and two different nitrogen fertilization times. The number of leaves on the main stems and their emergence time were periodically tagged. The results indicated that the final leaf number on the main stems in the two rice varieties was quite stable over a three-year period despite of the differences in their respective growth cycles. Interaction between nitrogen fertilization and water management influenced the final leaf number on the main stems. Plant density also had a significant influence on the rate of leaf appearance by extending the phyllochron and postponing the onset of intraspecific competition after the emergence of the 7th leaf on the main stems. Final leaf number on the main stems was negatively related to plant density. A relationship between leaf appearance and thermal time was established with a strong nonlinear function. In direct-seeded rice, the length of the phyllochron increases exponentially in line with the advance of plant development. A general model, derived from 2-year experimental data, was developed and satisfactorily validated; it had a root mean square error of 0.3 leaf. An exponential model can be used to predict leaf emergence in direct-seeded rice.

Personalized E-Health Management System for Monitoring and Empowering Patients

This paper presents the design and development of a health information system following the requirements of Spanish law as well as physicians and patients. In Spain, these systems are relatively new because, until recently, ownership of patients＇ medical records belonged to the health institution. The proposed system gives patients all the information about their medical records, online. The difference from other initiatives is that the hospital provides patients with information and the latter are responsible for its future use. Importantly, this application allows physicians to carry out a personalized and individualized monitoring and treatment of each patient. The tests were conducted with real patients, all with a chronic disease （to show each patient the personalized data）. They all expressed their appreciation of this application＇s usefulness, and obtained satisfaction level was very high. Thanks to having medical information stored on the proposed system, it can be provided to other specialists to improve the knowledgement about the patient.

Recognition of a pathogen by the plant immune system often triggers a form of regulated cell death traditionally known as the hypersensitive response(HR).This type of cell death occurs precisely at the site of pathogen recognition,and it is restricted to a few *** research has shed light on how plant immune receptors are mechanistically ***,two central key questions remain largely unresolved:how does cell death zonation take place,and what are the mechanisms that underpin this phenomenon?consequently,bona fide transcriptional indicators of HR are lacking,which prevents deeper insight into its mechanisms before cell death becomes macroscopic and precludes early or live *** this study,to identify the transcriptional indicators of HR we used the paradigmatic Arabidopsis thaliana–Pseudomonas syringae pathosystem and performed a spatiotemporally resolved gene expression analysis that compared infected cells that will undergo HR upon pathogen recognition with bystander cells that will stay alive and activate *** data revealed unique and time-dependent differences in the repertoire of differentially expressed genes,expression profiles,and biological processes derived from tissue undergoing HR and that of its ***,we generated a pipeline based on concatenated pairwise comparisons between time,zone,and treatment that enabled us to define 13 robust transcriptional HR *** these genes,the promoter of an uncharacterized AAA-ATPase was used to obtain a fluorescent reporter transgenic line that displays a strong spatiotemporally resolved signal specifically in cells that will later undergo pathogen-triggered cell *** valuable set of genes can be used to define cells that are destined to die upon infection with HR-triggering bacteria,opening new avenues for specific and/or high-throughput techniques to study HR processes at a single-cell level.
