A determination of the quality of life of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents

Objective: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic illness which can have a negative effect on the health care and development of children and can put their lives in danger. This descriptive study aimed to determine the quality of life and the factors affecting it of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL).Methods: The study was conducted in the Child Endocrinology Unit of a University Hospital in Bursa, Turkey. Totally 64 children eight-12 years and 85 adolescents aged 13-18 with type 1 diabetes and their parents were recruited. HbA1c measurements were obtained from the records of the endocrinology clinicare, which were made once every three months, and the average of the last three measurements was taken in the study. The PedsQL was used to measure quality of life of the children and adolescents. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 and P<0.05 was considered significant. The demographic data of the children and parents were analyzed using means and percentiles. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between two averages. Results: Of the sub-groups on the scale, affective and school function scores were somewhat low, and social function scores were high. The quality of life scores of the children and adolescents were found to correlate with those of their parents. A negative correlation was found between HbA1c levels and adolescent quality of life, a positive correlation was found between the child's age and the quality of life of the child and parents, and a negative correlation was found between the number of children in the family and the quality of life of the child and parents. Conclusions: An evaluation of the quality of life after a diagnosis of diabetes can be used to assess the problems which may be faced by children and adolescents and to combat these problems.

Dexmedetomidine is anα2 agonist that is frequently used for sedation in intensive care units(ICUs).Hypotension and bradycardia are common adverse effects observed in clinical practice.In perioperative conditions,polyuria is a rare adverse effect with limited case reports after dexmedetomidine infusion.Similar to this situation,in ICU,there are rare cases.We present the case of a 59-year-old man who developed polyuria secondary to high-dose intravenous dexmedetomidine infusion in the medical ICU.

A note on generalized Lie derivations of prime rings

Let R be a prime ring of characteristic not 2, A be an additive subgroup of R, and F, T, D, K： A →R be additive maps such that F（[x, y]） = F（x）y - yg（x） - T（y）x ＋ xD（y） for all x, y ∈ A. Our aim is to deal with this functional identity when A is R itself or a noncentral Lie ideal of R. Eventually, we are able to describe the forms of the mappings F, T, D, and K in case A = R with deg（R）〉 3 and also in the case A is a noncentral Lie ideal and deg（R）〉 9. These enable us in return to characterize the forms of both generalized Lie derivations, D-Lie derivations and Lie centralizers of R under some mild assumptions. Finally, we give a generalization of Lie homomorphisms on Lie ideals.

Production and characterization of hydrophobic zinc borate by using palm oil

Zinc borate （ZB） was synthesized using zinc oxide, boric acid synthesized from colemanite, and reference ZB as seed. The effects of reaction parameters such as reaction time, reactant ratio, and seed ratio on its yield were examined. Then, the effects of palm oil with solvents （isopropyl alcohol （IPA）, ethanol, and methanol） added to the reaction on its hydrophobicity were explored. Reactions were carried out under determined reaction conditions with magnetically and mechanically stirred systems. The produced ZB was characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and measurements of contact angle identified hydrophobicity. The results showed that hydrophobic ZB was successfully produced under determined reaction conditions. The change of process parameters influenced its yield and the usage of palm oil provided hydrophobicity.

Effect of modifying agents on the hydrophobicity and yield of zinc borate synthesized by zinc oxide

The aim of this study was to synthesize zinc borate using zinc oxide, reference boric acid, and reference zinc borate （reference ZB） as the seed, and to investigate the effects of modifying agents and reaction parameters on the hydrophobicity and yield, respectively. The reaction parameters include reaction time （1-5 h）, reactant ratio （H3BO3/ZnO by mass： 2-5）, seed ratio （seed crystal/（H3BO3＋ZnO） by mass： 0-2wt%）, reaction temperature （50-120~C）, cooling temperature （10-80~C）, and stirring rate （400-700 r/min）; the modifying agents involve propylene glycol （PG, 0-6wt%）, kerosene （lwt%-6wt%）, and oleic acid （OA, lwt%-6wt%） with solvents （isopropyl alcohol （IPA）, ethanol, and methanol）. The results of reaction yield obtained from either magnetically or mechanically stirred systems were compared. Zinc borate produced was characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）, and contact angle tests to identify the hydrophobicity. In conclusion, zinc borate is synthesized successfully under the optimized reaction conditions, and the different modifying agents with various solvents affect the hydrophobicity of zinc borate.

P wave dispersion is prolonged in patients with Wilson's disease

AIM:To investigate the P wave dispersion as a non-invasive marker of intra-atrial conduction disturbances in patients with Wilson's disease. METHODS:We compared Wilson's disease patients (n = 18) with age matched healthy subjects (n = 15) as controls. The diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms, laboratory tests (ceruloplasmin, urinary and hepatic copper concentrations). P wave dispersion, a measurement of the heterogeneity of atrial depolarization, was measured as the difference between the duration of the longest and the shortest P-waves in 12 lead electrocardiography. RESULTS:All the patients were asymptomatic on cardiological examination and have sinusal rhythm in electrocardiography. Left ventricular and left atrial diameters, left ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular mass index were similar in both groups. The Wilson's disease patients had a significantly higher P wave dispersion compared with the controls (44.7 ± 5.8 vs 25.7 ± 2.5, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION:There was an increase in P wave dispersion in cardiologically asymptomatic Wilson's disease patients which probably represents an early stage of cardiac involvement.

Flail Chest Associated with a Simple Fall and Successful External Tamponade Application in a Pediatric Case

A flail chest is characterized by four or more rib fractures unilaterally or at more than two sites. The current article reports a 10-year-old case of a flail chest due to a simple fall from a chair while at breakfast. This pediatric case is presented because of its rare occurrence with a successful external tamponade application. Pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax associated with simple falls should be considered in pediatric patients. In the current case, blunt chest trauma-associated bilateral multiple rib fractures and a flail chest were present. The chest wall was destabilized and respiratory functions were compromised. Early stabilization with tube thoracostomy and external tamponade were achieved in the emergency setting. Intubation was not required after these procedures.

A New Species of Troglohyphantes(Araneae:Linyphiidae)from a Turkish Cave

The spider family Linyphiidae comprises 104 species in Turkey that of them eight species are known from the caves, we recently started to conduct intensive taxonomic and faunistic studies on this family. The genus Troglohyphantes was described in 1882 by Joseph as a cave spider from Carniola in western Slovenia. Members of this genus inhabited cave environment, neighbouring habitat and some species of them are true troglobites. A new species of Troglohyphantes Joseph 1881 is described from Turkey. Differences between the new species and related species are discussed. Troglohyphantes turcicus sp. n. (Araneae: Linyphiidae) is described from Buzluk cave in Turkey. Drawing of characteristic features, the male palpal organs and the female genitalia are presented. Key to the species of Troglohyphantes group is given including in T. turcicus sp. n.
