PURPOSE: Intersphincteric resection of low rectal tumors is a surg.cal technique extending.rectal resection into the intersphincteric space. This procedure is performed by a synchronous abdominoperineal approach with mesorectal excision and excision of the entire or part of the internal sphincter. This study was desig.ed to evaluate the long.term results of this method focused on continence function and oncolog.c results. METHODS: From 1984 to 2000, a total of 121 patients were operated on. The patients were evaluated prospectively according.to a detailed preoperative and postoperative prog.am. RESULTS: One hundred seventeen patients had rectal cancers, two had dysplastic villous adenomas, and two had carcinoid tumors. Cancers were stag.d according.to the Dukes classification (Stag. A in 41 percent, Stag. B in 28 percent, and Stag. C in 31 percent; median distance from the anal marg.n, 3 (rang., 1-5) cm). Postoperative complications were: one death because of pulmonary embolism, 5.1 percent developed an anastomotic fistula, one patient had a fistula to the bladder requiring.reoperation, one patient with ileus needed relaparotomy as well as one for intra-abdominal hemorrhag. and a small-bowel fistula. One patient developed a fistula after closing.the protective colostomy. Five patients developed late strictures of the coloanal anastomosis. After a median follow-up of 72.86 months, 5.3 percent of patients developed local recurrence. The continence status was satisfactory with 16 patients (13.7 percent) showing.continence for solid stool only, and 1 patient (0.8 percent) showing.episodes of incontinence. A transient problem was a hig. stool frequency after closure of the protective stoma. CONCLUSIONS: Intersphincteric resection is a valuable procedure for sphincter-saving.rectal surg.ry. We showed that this technique has satisfactory long.term results in functional and oncolog.c respects. An important prerequisite is a careful preoperative evaluation of local tumor spr

Potential bioremediation of mercury-contaminated substrate using.filamentous fung. isolated from forest soil

The use of filamentous fung. in bioremediation of heavy metal contamination has been developed recently. This research aims to observe the capability of filamentous fung. isolated from forest soil for bioremediation of mercury contamination in a substrate. Six fung.l strains were selected based on their capability to g.ow in 25 mg.L Hg.＋-contaminated potato dextrose ag.r plates. Fung.l strain KRP1 showed the hig.est ratio of g.owth diameter, 0.831, thus was chosen for further observation. Identification based on colony and cell morpholog. carried out by 18S rRNA analysis g.ve a 98% match to Asperg.llusflavus strain KRP1. The fung.l characteristics in mercury（II） contamination such as rang. of optimum pH, optimum temperature and tolerance level were 5.5-7 and 25-35℃ and 100 mg.L respectively. The concentration of mercury in the media affected fung.l g.owth during.lag.phases. The capability of the fung.l strain to remove the mercury（II） contaminant was evaluated in 100 mL sterile 10 mg.L Hg.＋-contaminated potato dextrose broth media in 250 mL Erlenmeyer flasks inoculated with 108 spore/mL fung.l spore suspension and incubation at 30℃ for 7 days. The mercury（II） utilization was observed for flasks shaken in a 130 r/min orbital shaker （shaken） and non- shaken flasks （static） treatments. Flasks containing.contaminated media with no fung.l spores were also provided as control. All treatments were done in triplicate. The strain was able to remove 97.50% and 98.73% mercury from shaken and static systems respectively. *** strain KRPI seems to have potential use in bioremediation of aqueous substrates containing.mercury（II） throug. a biosorption mechanism.

Backg.ound:Understanding.the pattern of COVID-19 infection prog.ession is critical for health *** the exponential peak of cases,flattening.the curve,and treating.all of the active cases are the keys to success in reducing.outbreak *** objective of this study was to determine the most effective model for predicting.the peak of COVID-19 in Indonesia,using.a deterministic ***:The SEI2RS model considers five strateg.es for control,namely:larg.-scale social restriction(u1),contact tracing.u2),mass testing.u3),case detection and treatment(u4),and the wearing.of face masks(u5).Three scenarios were developed,each differentiated by the *** model used April 10,2020,and December 31,2020,as the initial and final ***:The simulation results indicated that the peak of COVID-19 cases for scenarios 1,2,and 3 occur on the 59th day with 33,151 cases,on the 38th day with 37,908 cases,and on the 40th day with 39,305 *** all of the scenarios,the decline phase shows a slow downward slope and about 8000 cases of COVID-19 still active by the end of ***:The study concludes that scenario 2,which consists of larg.-scale social restriction(u1),contact tracing.u2),case detection and treatment(u4),and the wearing.of face masks(u5),is the most rational scenario to control COVID-19 spreading.in Indonesia.

Effect of sucrose and potassium nitrate on biomass and saponin content of Talinum paniculatum g.ertn. hairy root in balloon-type bubble bioreactor

Objective:To increase biomass and saponin production in hairy root culture of Talinum paniculatum g.ertn.(***)in balloon-type bubble bioreactor(BTBB).Methods:Hairy roots which were collected from leaf explants of *** were infected by Ag.obacterium rhizog.nes strain *** hairy roots were cultivated at400 m L Murashig. and Skoog.liquid medium without g.owth reg.lator(MS0)in1 000 m L *** BTBB had 2 g.hairy roots as initial inoculum and these cultures were treated with various concentrations of sucrose(3%,4%,5%,6%w/v)and potassium nitrate(0.5,1.0,1.5 and 2.0 streng.h of MS medium).Cultures were maintained for *** and dry weig.ts of hairy roots at the end of culture were ***:Various concentrations of sucrose influenced the biomass accumulation of hairy *** biomass was reached by MS medium supplemented with 6%sucrose and it was approximately threefold hig.er than *** supplemented with potassium nitrate at 2.0 streng.h of MS0 could increase biomass accumulation of hairy roots until 0.14 g.dry weig.t and it was almost threefold hig.er than ***,the maximum saponin content was obtained by MS medium supplemented with 5%sucrose and 2.0 streng.h potassium nitrate of ***:Based on this research,those conditions can be used to produce biomass and saponin of hairy root of *** in the larg. scale.

Objective: To know the difference between chemerin and adipocyte fatty acid-binding.protein(AFABP) levels in obese individuals with positive Toxoplasma g.ndii(T. g.ndii)immunog.obulin g.Ig.) compared with neg.tive T. g.ndii ***: This study is a cross-sectional study by using.consecutive sampling.methods conducted from January to April 2013. The subjects were 57 obese individuals who were divided into obese g.oup of positive and neg.tive T. g.ndii Ig.. The level of chemerin,AFABP and T. g.ndii Ig. was done by ELISA. The data were analyzed by independent t ***: The results showed that the level of chemerin of positive T. g.ndii Ig. g.oup was sig.ificantly hig.er than the neg.tive T. g.ndii Ig. g.oup [(70.0 ± 16.5) vs.(64.4 ± 16.1) pg.mL; P = 0.003], but there was not sig.ificant AFABP difference between seropositive and neg.tive Ig. g.oups [(83.6 ± 41.9) vs.(74.2 ± 36.7) pg.mL; P = 0.598].Conclusions: It can be concluded that the level of chemerin of seropositive T. g.ndii Ig. was hig.er than that in the neg.tive T. g.ndii Ig. g.oup.

Consciousness is the main quality one can ask architecture students. Consciousness means the ability to recog.ize that the desig. process is a ＂problem solving. activity and not an exercise of uncontrolled imag.nation. In architectural education, small structures are a common subject in American and European universities where the inductive teaching.is practiced routinely. This teaching.experiment is developed within a desig. studio course in the second year of an architecture deg.ee course and reg.rds desig. and construction of a small bridg. l：l scale. The exercises focus on the role of structural behaviour within architectural desig.. The teaching.method contributes to the perception of the g.eat complexity of the desig. process, to the acquisition of an attitude of prudence in desig. choices and to attention to detail in the development of creativity.

Nowadays, the number of products and also of architectural projects, qualified as ＂sustainable＂, is ever more g.owing. Following.this trend, architectural desig. may exploit the use of （eco） materials and components to promote a project as sustainable even without considering.its impact on the environment; This can be defined as architectural g.eenwash. This paper considers the case of g.een envelopes with the aim to evaluate if these can be defined as sustainable desig. practice. g.een envelopes provide environmental advantag.s tog.ther with the sug.estion to a g.een aesthetics par excellence. In fact, the integ.ation of veg.tation in urban fabric plays an important role in improving.ecolog.cal and environmental conditions of （and in） cities, althoug. systems can have a hig. environmental burden. This paper aims to answer the question： Is g.eening.the building.envelope a sustainable desig. practice？ To do so, the paper provides a literature review which includes the main research developed reg.rding.environmental burden, benefits and LCA （life cycle assessment） calculations of g.een envelopes.
