Modelling the hydrological balance in semi-arid zones is essential for effective water resource management,encompassing both surface water and *** study aims to model the monthly hydrological water cycle in the Wadi Mina upstream watershed(northwest Algeria)by applying the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)hydrological *** modelling integrates spatial data such as the Digital Elevation Model(DEM),land use,soil types and various meteorological parameters including precipitation,maximum and minimum temperatures,relative humidity,solar radiation and wind *** SWAT model was calibrated and validated using data from January 2012 to December 2014,with a calibra-tion period from January 2012 to August 2013 and a validation period from September 2013 to December *** and parameter calibration were conducted using the SWAT-SA program,and model performance evaluation relied on comparing the observed discharge at the outlet of the basin with model-simulated discharge,assessed through statistical coefficients including Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE),coefficient of determination(R2)and Percent Bias(PBAIS).Calibration results indicated favourable objec-tive function values(NSE=0.79,R2=0.93,PBAIS=-8.53%),although a slight decrease was observed during validation(NSE=0.69,R2=0.86,and PBAIS=-11.41%).The application of the SWAT model to the Wadi Mina upstream watershed highlighted its utility in simulating the spatial distribution of different components of the hydrological balance in this *** SWAT model revealed that approximately 71%of the precipitation in the basin evaporates,while only 29%contributes to surface runoff or infiltration into the soil.

Although the majority of patients with perimembranous ventricular septal defect and septal aneurysm remained asymptomatic, some of them presented with serious complications during adulthood and thus required high risky surgery. In accordance with other rare condition, the incidence and natural history have not been well documented. This case describes the occurrence of a septic pulmonary emboli associated with right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in a young child.

Stress ulcer lesions of upper gastrointestinal tract are well recognized in patients undergoing open cardiac surgery. Gastrointestinal bleeding following cardiac surgery is infrequent with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of mucosal lesions and subsequent haemorrhage is complex and multifactorial. The diagnosis as well as the treatment of this complication remains a challenge for surgeons. Identifying the source of bleeding can be difficult. Despite of the successful control of haemorrhage using various combinations of endoscopic and pharmacological therapies, the mortality rate remains unchanged. Benefit of routine stress ulcer prophylaxis remains controversial.

We report a 26-year-old man with critical aortic coarctation, severe bicuspid aortic valve stenosis, infective endocarditis and ascending aortic aneurysm. He underwent simultaneously in singlestage a Bentall’s procedure and an extra-anatomic ascending-descending aortic bypass grafting by 14-mm Dacron tube, through median sternotomy. The immediate postoperative outcome was favourable. The CT scan control for 7 years after surgery showed a good patency of the extra-anatomic bypass.

Objective: we sought to compare long-term results of three techniques: CMC, OMC and PMC in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis. Patients and Method: Between January 1994 and December 2015, 183 patients underwent mitral valve surgery for rheumatic mitral restenosis. All patients were investigated by echocardiography-Doppler performed by a senior cardiologist. The patients were divided into 3 groups: patients who have previously closed mitral commissurotomy (CMC n = 101), patients with previously open mitral commissurotomy (OMC n = 28) and those treated by Balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PMC = 54). Results: The three groups were comparable in term of major demographic data. Mitral restenosis occurred precociously in groups treated by PMC (7 ± 4 years), followed by group with OMC 11.4 ± 4 years and CMC group but it occurred later CMC 16.8 ± 7.8 years (p Conclusion: CMC produces better long-term outcome than OMC and PMC. However, it would be premature to conclude to its superiority.

Does Obesity Affect Early Results after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting?

Background: The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of obesity on early results after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients underwent isolated CABG from January 2000 through December 2012 was conducted. 586 patients were classified into two groups: Obese (n = 100) BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 and non-obese (n = 486) BMI ≤ 30kg/m2. Results: The obese patients included more women (p 0.01), hypertensives (p = 0.01) and dyslipidemics (p = 0001). The CPB, aortic champ times and number of bypass graft were similar between the groups (p = 0.35, p = 0.51 and p = 0.59 respectively). Also the composite of in-hospital mortality and postoperative complication didn’t differ between the groups. The incidence of perioperative myocardial infarction, and need for inotropic drugs or IABP were significantly less in obese patients (p = 0.028, p = 0.031 and p 0.01 respectively). Conclusions: The current study showed that obesity is not a risk factor of adverse events after CABG and continuous to give another aspect of the “obesity paradox”.

Surgery in the Acute Phase of Infective Endocarditis: 5 Years after Our Initial Experience

Aim: Comparing the results of acute phase infectious endocarditis surgery between two periods. Methods and Results: The study is about 2 series, series A between 1993 and 1997, and series B between 1998 and 2012, respectively 13 and 51 patients. The two periods were similar concerning the number of patients per year, which was 3.12 cases/year for series A and 3.64 cases/year for series B. The authors noted a change in epidemiological profile, with an increase of median age (31 y.o for series A and 37 y.o for series B), and the emergency of endocarditis on prosthetic valve (none on series A and 8 cases for series B). Surgical indications and results didn’t change too much, hospital mortality rate was 15.3% for series A and 17.6% for series B. Conclusion: Infectious endocarditis is still a major public healthcare problem in developing countries, despite the development of diagnostic tools and patient care. Prevention is still the major asset in the treatment of this disease.

Background:Vascular impairment is one of the major contributors to *** aimed to identify blood biomarkers suggestive of potential impairment of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)in subjects with Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Methods:We used administrative data from the VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure Resource Center to study both inpatients and outpatients with *** samples from healthy control and AD individuals were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and proteomics approaches to identify differentially expressed *** analysis was applied to explore significantly enriched ***:In the same cohort of patients with AD,we found twice number of subjects with cerebral amyloid angiopathy in the two-year period after the onset of AD,compared to the number of subjects with cerebral amyloid angiopathy in the two-year period prior to AD *** pathways related to BBB,like cell adhesion,extracellular matrix organization and Wnt signaling,were activated and differentially expressed proteins such as ADAM22,PDGFR-α,DKK-4,Neucrin and RSOP-1 were ***,matrix metalloproteinase-9,which is implicated in causing degradation of basal lamina and BBB disruption,was significantly increased in the plasma of AD ***:Alteration of proteins found in AD subjects could provide new insights into biomarkers regulating permeability and BBB integrity.

The presence of toxic dyes in the aqueous medium has threatened environmental safety, and thereby re- moving them from wastewater in an efficient way is highly desired. Herein, the efficient biosorbents were successfully fabricated via a facile physical gelation process of sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS) in an acidic aqueous solution. The as-prepared hydrogel beads not only displayed water superabsorbent properties and pH-responsive swelling characters but also exhibited excellent methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity removal efficiency with experimental maximum MB adsorption capacity of 2518 and 1005 mg g -1 , which are comparable with most reported lignocellulosic and alginate-based hydrogels. The MB adsorption process fitted well in different kinetic and isotherm models and became more heterogeneous in concentrated MB solutions as verified by principal component analysis results. The adsorption mechanism was proposed, and the high dye absorbency was attributed to the strong electro- static forces between adsorbents and adsorbates. Our current study provides a promising and sustainable composite hydrogels platform targeted to dye decontamination.
