Correlation of rib fracture patterns with abdominal solid organ injury: A retrospective observational cohort study

Purpose::Rib fractures are one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality and are associated with abdominal solid organ injury(ASOI).The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of ASOI with the number,location,and involved segments of rib fracture(s)in blunt chest ***::This retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with blunt chest trauma over the age of 15 years,who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of rib fractures from July 2015 to September *** ethic committee approval,a retrospective chart review was designed and patients with a diagnosis of rib fractures were *** who had chest and abdominopelvic CT scan were included in the study and additional data including age,gender,injury severity score,trauma mechanism,number and sides of the fractured ribs(left/right/bilateral),rib fracture segments(upper,middle,lower zone)and results of chest and abdominal spiral CT scan were *** correlation between ASOI and the sides,segments and number of rib fracture(s)was assessed by Pearson's correlation ***::Altogether 1056 patients with rib fracture(s)were *** mean age was(42.76±13.35)years and 85.4%were *** most common mechanism of trauma was car accident(34.6%).Most fractures occurred in the middle rib zone(60.44%)and the most commonly involved ribs were the 6th and 7th ones(15.7%and 16.4%,respectively).Concurrent abdominal injuries were observed in 103 patients(34.91%)and were significantly associated with middle zone rib ***::There is a significant relationship between middle zone rib fractures and ***-abdominal injuries are not restricted to fractures of the lower ribs and thus should always be kept in mind during management of blunt trauma patients with rib fractures.

The Paleocene coals of the Salt Range in the Punjab Province of Pakistan have great economic potential;however,their trace element and stable isotopic characteristics have not been studied in detail except for a few sporadic *** this study,a total of 59 coal samples of which 14 are obtained from open cast mines have been investigated for elemental composition andδ^(13)C-δ^(15)N isotopic *** contents of trace elements such as Co,Cr,Cu,Pb,Sr,Th,U,V,and Zn are 7.4,41.7,11.2,12.5,90.2,4.0,1.9,128,and 31.1 mg/kg,*** values,when compared with the World Coal Clarke values,were relatively higher in low-rank coals in comparison with Clarke values for brown ***,As(20.4 mg/kg),Co(6.6 mg/kg),Cr(22.4 mg/kg),Cu(^(13).3 mg/kg),Pb(19.2 mg/kg),Sr(^(15)4.7 mg/kg),Th(2.5 mg/kg),V(47.8 mg/kg),and Zn(75.1 mg/kg)were significantly higher in the sub-bituminous to bituminous coals of the Salt *** analysis,based on X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,revealed that the studied samples contain illite,kaolinite calcite,gypsum,pyrite,and *** affinity with organic and inorganic phases of coals calculated by an indirect statistical approach indicated a positive association of ash content with Ag,Al,Co,Cr,Cs,Cu,Mn,P,Rb,Pb,Th,U,and V,suggesting the presence of inorganic components in studied ***,As,Fe,Sr,and Zn exhibit negative correlations that imply their association with the organic ***δ^(13)C andδ^(15)N isotopic range and average−24.94‰to−25.86‰(−25.41‰)and−2.77‰to 3.22‰(0.96‰),respectively,reflecting 3C type modern terrestrial vegetation were common in the palaeomires of studied coal *** addition,the trivial variations of 0.92‰and 0.45‰among^(13)C and^(15)N values can be attributed to water level fluctuations and plant assemblies.

How Small DNA Minicircles Can Be Applied to Construct DNA Nanotubes？

DNA as a life＇s information carrier can be modified into geometrically fine nanostructures via self-assembly of designed nucleotides with specified length. In this work, three DNA minicircles with designed lengths of 48-nt, 50-nt, and 52-nt, are directed to self-assemble into nanotubes after hybridization with staple strands, following the folding strategy with each double crossover （DX） at 2.5 turns. Much smaller DNA minicircles such as the 32-nt ring are highly rigid once they form double helices, therefore they lack the flexibility to form finely ordered nanotubes. In the case of nanotubes comprising of 52-nt minicircles, most nanotubes were 800 nm long and 20% were up to 2 p.m, whereas the nanotubes composed of 50 base pair subunits and 48 base pair subunits with the DX at frustrated 2.5 turns showed relatively shorter nanotubes at 700 and 600 （or 500） nm, respectively.

Optical sensors based on the NiPc-CoPc composite films deposited by drop casting and under the action of centrifugal force

In this study, solution processed composite films of nickel phthalocyanine（NiPc） and cobalt phthalocyanine（CoPc）are deposited by drop casting and under centrifugal force. The films are deposited on surface-type inter-digitated silver electrodes on ceramic alumina substrates. The effects of illumination on the impedance and capacitance of the NiPc–CoPc composite samples are investigated. The samples deposited under centrifugal force show better conductivity than the samples deposited by drop casting technique. In terms of impedance and capacitance sensitivities the samples fabricated under centrifugal force are more sensitive than the drop casting samples. The values of impedance sensitivity（Sz）are equal to（-1.83） MΩ·cm^2/mW and（-5.365） MΩ·cm^2/mW for the samples fabricated using drop casting and under centrifugal force, respectively. Similarly, the values of capacitance sensitivity（Sc） are equal to 0.083 pF·cm^2/mW and 0.185 pF·cm～2/mW for the samples fabricated by drop casting and under centrifugal force. The films deposited using the different procedures could potentially be viable for different operational modes（i.e., conductive or capacitive） of the optical sensors. Both experimental and simulated results are discussed.

Sensitivity enhancement of OD-and OD-CNT-based humidity sensors by high gravity thin film deposition technique

The humidity sensing properties of the thin films of an organic semiconductor material orange dye （OD） and its composite with CNTs deposited at high gravity conditions have been reported. Impedance, phase angle, ca- pacitance and dissipation of the samples were measured at 1 kHz and room temperature conditions. The impedance decreases and capacitance increases with an increase in the humidity level. It was found that the sensitivity of the OD-based thin film samples deposited at high gravity condition is higher than the samples deposited at low gravity condition. The impedances and capacitance sensitivities of the of the samples deposited under high gravity condition are 6.1 times and 1.6 times higher than the films deposited under low gravity condition.

Analysis of Hybrid Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems in Series Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Simulations

In this paper, an extended analysis of the performance of different hybrid Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems (RESS) for use in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) with a series drivetrain topology is analyzed, based on simulations with three different driving cycles. The investigated hybrid energy storage topologies are an energy optimized lithium-ion battery (HE) in combination with an Electrical Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) system, in combination with a power optimized lithium-ion battery (HP) system or in combination with a Lithium-ion Capacitor (LiCap) system, that act as a Peak Power System. From the simulation results it was observed that hybridization of the HE lithium-ion based energy storage system resulted from the three topologies in an increased overall energy efficiency of the RESS, in an extended all electric range of the PHEV and in a reduced average current through the HE battery. The lowest consumption during the three driving cycles was obtained for the HE-LiCap topology, where fuel savings of respectively 6.0%, 10.3% and 6.8% compared with the battery stand-alone system were achieved. The largest extension of the range was achieved for the HE-HP configuration (17% based on FTP-75 driving cycle). HP batteries however have a large internal resistance in comparison to EDLC and LiCap systems, which resulted in a reduced overall energy efficiency of the hybrid RESS. Additionally, it was observed that the HP and LiCap systems both offer significant benefits for the integration of a peak power system in the drivetrain of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle due to their low volume and weight in comparison to that of the EDLC system.

Effect of Plant Derived Smoke on Germination and Post Germination Expression of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Smoke produced from burning of plant material elicits a striking increase in seed germination in various plant species. In present work, effect of plant derived smoke exposure on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds germination and post germination response has been studied in laboratory. Plant derived smoke was generated by burning of plant material (leaf, straws etc.) in a special designed furnace. Non-imbibed and imbibed seeds of wheat were exposed to plant derived smoke for 1 hr time duration. Best results were observed in non-imbibed seeds treated with plant derived smoke while imbibed seeds showed poor response to germination percentage, germination index, seedling vigor index and root shoot length. It has been proved from present study that plant derived smoke has stimulatory effect on germination & post germination response of non-imbibed seeds while it may cause inhibitory effect in imbibed seeds of wheat.

In Vitro Study of Callogenesis and Regeneration Potential of Elite Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Cultivars

The potential for biotechnological applications in crop improvement programs requires identifying genotypes that allow cell/tissue culture with predictable plant regeneration. In the past, many genotypes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) have been examined for potential use in tissue culture studies. The present research work has also been designed to study in vitro callogenesis expression and regeneration potential of wheat cultivars under controlled laboratory conditions. Seeds of four elite commercial high yielding cultivars of wheat namely: NARC-2011, AAS-2011, PAK-2013 and GAL-2013, were collected from the Crop Science Institute National Agricultural Research Center (CSI-NARC) Islamabad, as the source of plant material for in vitro studies. The seeds were surface sterilized in 10% sodium hypochlorite solutions for 10 minutes with continuous shaking under laminar air flow hood. After that seeds were placed on MS (Murashige & Skoog, 1962) based callus induction and regeneration medium with various concentrations of 2, 4-D and BAP in separate test tubes. Maximum callus induction frequency of 90% for Pak-13 and AAS-11, followed by 87% and 83% for Gla-13 and NARC-11, respectively, was recorded at 4 mg/l and 6 mg/l of 2, 4-D. Similarly, maximum regeneration of 90% for AAS-11 and Pak-13, followed by 80% and 87% for NARC-11 and Gla-13 respectively, was recorded on MS basal medium containing 1.5 mg/l of BAP. An increasing trend in regeneration from 0.5 to 1.5 mg/l of BAP was observed but it gradually decreased with increasing concentration of BAP from 1.5 mg/l for all wheat cultivars. The callus formed under light was golden brown, dry nodule and smooth compact and less embryogenic while under dark conditions, it was white to yellowish white, dry nodule and compact and more embryogenic. Best results for callus induction and regeneration were obtained at temperature (24°C ± 1°C) for all wheat cultivars.
