The peptide fraction of Bothrops jararaca snake venom induces toxicological effects on the male reproductive system after local envenomation in mice

Bothrops envenomation is complex and provokes prominent local tissue damage and systemic disturbances,but little is known about their effects on the male reproductive *** intratesticular injection,the bioactive peptide fraction(Bj-PF)obtained from Bothrops jararaca snake venom changes the structure of different stages of the seminiferous epithelium cycle in adult *** the first time,we investigated whether local envenomation of Bj-PF induces toxicological effects on the male reproductive system,particularly on the seminiferous epithelium and Sertoli *** adult mice were treated with 0.24 ***^(-1) by intramuscular(i.m.)injection for 24 *** testes samples were collected for morphological and morphometric *** toxicological effects of Bj-PF were also analyzed on mitochondrial metabolism and nitrite(NO2)production in 15P-1 Sertoli cell ***-PF changed the structure and function of the seminiferous epithelium,particularly the disruption of the epithelium and the presence of degenerated germ cells in the adluminal compartment,but there were no alterations in the basal ***-PF increased the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium and decreased the lumen diameter of the *** histological assessment of the degree of tubule degeneration revealed that Bj-PF also increased the number of hypospermatogenic tubules compared to ***-PF reduced NO2 levels in 15P-1 Sertoli cells without changing the mitochondrial ***,the fact that Bj-PF alters the structure and function of the seminiferous epithelium suggests that bioactive peptides found in *** snake venom can have toxicological effects on the reproductive systems of affected male mice,providing new insight into the biological characteristics of snake venom and therapeutic strategies for envenomation inflammation.

Helicobacter pylori in dental plaque and stomach of patients from Northern Brazil

AIm: To establish whether virulence factor genes vacA and cagA are present in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) retrieved from gastric mucosa and dental plaque in pa-tients with dyspepsia. mETHODS: Cumulative dental plaque specimens and gastric biopsies were submitted to histological exami-nation, rapid urease test and polymerase chain reac-tion (PCR) assays to detect the presence of cagA and vacA ***: Detection of H. pylori from dental plaque and gastric biopsy samples was greater by PCR com-pared to histological examination and the rapid ure-ase test. DNA from H. pylori was detected in 96% of gastric mucosa samples and in 72% of dental plaque samples. Sixty-three (89%) of 71 dental plaque sam-ples that were H. pylori-positive also exhibited identical vacA and cagA genotypes in gastric mucosa. The most common genotype was vacAs1bm1 and cagA positive, either in dental plaque or gastric mucosa. These viru-lent H. pylori isolates were involved in the severity of clinical ***: These pathogenic strains were found simultaneously in dental plaque and gastric mucosa, which suggests that gastric infection is correlated with the presence of H. pylori in the mouth.

Propranolol hydrochloride can be considered a persistent and bioaccumulative pharmaceutical in the *** drug and its by-products are potentially toxic and have adverse effects,since these compounds have been associated with endocrine-disrupting effects,reproductive deficiencies,embryo abnormalities and pericardial ***_(2)–La 0.05%–carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin(CmCD)nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a simple two-step method,which consists of sonification and *** characterization analyses reveal that lanthanum is dispersed on the semiconductor surface,probably forming Ti–O–La bonds,which can induce oxygen vacancies and surface defects that effectively restrain the recombination of photogenerated electron/holes *** efficiency of TiO_(2)–La 0.05%–CmCD samples in degradation of propranolol under UV-light irradiation is higher than that of pristine TiO_(2) within 20 min reaction,probably due to complex formation between theβ-blocker and the oligosaccharide,which allows us to propose a photocatalytic mechanism based on the formation of intermediates and competition of these compounds to the radicals and CmCD cavities.

Immunohistochemistry panel segregates molecular types of hepatocellular carcinoma in Brazilian autopsy cases

AIm: To assess the distribution of proteins coded by genes reported as relevant for the molecular classification of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).mETHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, the following clinicopathological data were analyzed in 80 autopsied HCC patients: sex, age, ethnicity, alcohol intake, infection with hepatitis B and/or C virus, infection with human immunodeficiency virus, prior treatment, basic and immediate causes of death, liver weight, presence of cirrhosis, number and size of nodules, gross pattern, histological grade and variants, architectural pattern, invasion of large veins, and presence and location of extrahepatic metastases. The protein products of genes known to be involved in molecular pathogenesis of HCC, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), mET, keratin 19 (K19), vimentin, beta-catenin, mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), extracellular signaling-related kinase (ERK)1, ERK2, Ki67, cyclin D1, caspase 3 and p53, were detected by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays. The expression levels were scored and statistically assessed for correlation with HCC ***: Infection with hepatitis C virus was identified in 49% of the 80 autopsy patients, cirrhosis in 90%, advanced tumors in 95%, and extrahepatic metastases in 38%. Expression of K19, p53 and ERK1 correlated to high-grade lesions. Expression of ERK1, nuclear beta-catenin, cyclin D1 and ERK2 correlated to higher rates of cell proliferation as determined by Ki67. Expression of mET, EGFR (> 0) and caspase 3 correlated with lower histological grades. Expression of EGFR correlated to that of caspase 3, and overexpression of EGFR (≥ 200/300) was observed in low-grade tumors more frequently (grades 1 and 2: 67% vs grade 3: 27% and grade 4: 30%). Expression of ERK1 was associated with that of K19 and vimentin, whereas expression of ERK2 was associated with that of cyclin D1, mET and membrane beta-catenin. Expression of vimentin

Antitumor Activity of Disintegrin-Like Components from the Venom of montiviperaraddei

Our findings represent the first report of the antitumor activity of the disintegrin-like components from the venom of Armenian viper (m. raddei). The venom of m. raddei was separated by reverse phase high-performance liquid chroma-tography (RP HPLC), and individual fractions were analyzed for disintegrin activity. Disintegrin-like components from the venom of m. raddei, by blocking integrins on breast cancer cells (mDA-mB-435), not only interferes with adhesion of breast cancer cells to the extracellular matrix, but also inhibits cellular mobility which is essential for cancer invasion. These effects seriously curtail the metastatic capability of the mDA-mB-435 cells.

Disorders of glucose homeostasis, such as stress-induced hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, are common complications in patients in the intensive care unit. Patients with preexisting diabetes mellitus(Dm) are more susceptible to hyperglycemia, as well as a higher risk from glucose overcorrection, that may results in severe hypoglycemia. In critically ill patients with Dm, it is recommended to maintain a blood glucose range between 140-180 mg/d L. In neurological patients and surgical patients, tighter glycemic control(i.e., 110-140 mg/d) is recommended if hypoglycemia can be properly avoided. There is limited evidence that shows that critically ill diabetic patients with a glycosylated hemoglobin levels above 7% may benefit from looser glycemic control, in order to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia and significant glycemic variability.

Somatic Polymorphism Variation in Crotalaria retusaL. Seeds

The article describes the somatic polymorphism in Crotalaria retusa L. seeds. Each individual may produce yellow dormant seeds, brown quiescent seeds and unviable dark brown ones. Therefore, regarding physiology it is a dimorphism. We show that autogamy reduces dimorphism, favoring the formation of dormant seeds. However, the significant variation in dimorphism is seasonal as consequence of increased viability of dormant seeds under drier weather conditions. The variation is a phenotypic response to changes of humidity in the environment during plant reproduction, a mechanism inducing the prevalence of dormant seeds in the dry season and quiescent seeds during the rainy season. The seasonal alternation between dormancy and quiescence in seasonally dry environments has an apparent adaptive value. The chromatic polymorphism increases on the more humid coast and during the rainy season, due to increased mortality of dormant seeds under wetter weather conditions. Unviable seeds accumulate oxidized phenols in their seed coat that possibly act as induced chemical defenses. Its proportion increases with humidity, accentuating polymorphism, also in response to the increase in the predation rate by larvae of U. ornatrix during the rainy season.

PtRu nanoparticles supported on noble carbons for ethanol electrooxidation

In this work,three cytosine derived nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials(noble carbons,NCs)with different atomic C/N ratios and porous networks have been synthesized and used as supports for Pt Ru electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)for clean hydrogen ***,the metal phase and the carbon support play critical roles in the electrocatalysts final *** NPs size distribution was obtained over supports with low atomic C/N ratios(i.e.,4 and 6)and defined porosity(i.e.,1701 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CNZ and 1834 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CLZ,respectively).In contrast,a lower C/N ratio and poor porous network(i.e.,65 m^(2)g^(-1),Pt Ru/CLK)led to the largest particle size and fostered an increase of the alloying degree between Pt and Ru NPs(i.e.,3%for C/N~6 and 28%for C/N~3).Electrochemical active surface area was found to increase with decreasing NPs size and the alloy extent,due to a higher availability of Pt active *** degradation tests showed that Pt Ru/NCs outperform similar to Pt Ru NPs on commercial carbon pointing at the stabilizing effect of *** Ru/CNZ exhibited the best electrochemical performance(i.e.,69.1 m A mgPt-1),outperforming Pt Ru/CLZ and Pt Ru/CLK by3-and 9-fold,respectively,due to a suitable compromise between particle sizes,degree of alloy,textural properties and elemental *** anodes were scaled-up to a proton exchange membrane cell and Pt Ru/CNZ was proved to provide the best electrocatalytic activity(262 m A cm^(-2)and low energy requirements),matching the values obtained by the state of the art of EOR electrocatalysts.

Hormonal modulation of reproduction and fertility signaling in polistine wasps

In social insects,it has been suggested that reproduction and the production of particular fertilitylinked cuticular hydrocarbons(CHC)may be under shared juvenile hormone(JH)control,and this could have been key in predisposing such cues to later evolve into full-fledged queen pheromone ***,to date,only few studies have experimentally tested this“hormonal pleiotropy”***,we formally test this hypothesis using data from four species of Polistine wasps,Polistes dominula,Polistes satan,mischocyttarus metathoracicus,and mischocyttarus cassununga,and experimental treatments with JH using the JH analogue methoprene and the anti-JH *** line with reproduction being under JH control,our results show that across these four species,precocene significantly decreased ovary development when compared with both the acetone solvent-only control and the methoprene *** with the hormonal pleiotropy hypothesis,these effects on reproduction were further matched by subtle shifts in the CHC profiles,with univariate analyses showing that in *** and *** the abundance of particular linear alkanes and mono-methylated alkanes were affected by ovary development and our hormonal *** results indicate that in primitively eusocial wasps,and particularly in Polistes,reproduction and the production of some CHC cues are under joint JH *** suggest that pleiotropic links between reproduction and the production of such hydrocarbon cues have been key enablers for the origin of true fertility and queen signals in more derived,advanced eusocial insects.
