The Mesoamerican Ministers of Health have set 2020 as the target for malaria elimination to be achieved in the region. Imported malaria cases are a potential threat to countries attempting elimination or working to prevent resurgence. We report the first imported Plasmodium ovale infection with molecular confirmation in Central America, which occurred in a Guatemalan soldier that had been deployed in Africa. The obstacles for its diagnosis using the standard microscopy technique and the need to improve its detection are discussed.

目的　探讨α干扰素对Tpo刺激的巨核细胞增殖和分化的影响及特点。方法　以三种不同细胞分离方法制备的正常小鼠骨髓巨核细胞为研究对象 ,进行体外半固体集落培养和液体培养 ,观察α干扰素对巨核细胞集落形成单位 (CFU MK)、巨核细胞乙酰胆碱酯酶活性 (AChE)以及巨核细胞计数、细胞直径和DNA含量的影响。结果　α干扰素抑制CFU MK的形成 ,降低巨核细胞AChE ,抑制作用与α干扰素剂量呈正相关 ,增加Tpo剂量或去除骨髓辅助细胞都不能抵消或改变这一作用。α干扰素对巨核细胞增殖和分化的各方面均有影响 ,巨核细胞计数减少 ,平均细胞直径减小 ,几何平均多倍体降低。

Agave durangensis propagates basically by seeds. This species is economically important because it supports a mescal industry in Durango, Mexico. At present, its exploitation is overall by collecting plants from the wild populations. In order to reduce the negative impact of the collection in the natural populations of A. durangensis and to improve the mescal industry, it is necessary to establish plantations with selected seeds for a high vigor. In this paper, the variation in morphological features, physiological behavior of germination, and biochemical indicators of seed vigor among three natural populations of A. durangensis was assessed. Variation was found in the seed weight (0.68 to 1.15 mg/seed), seed dimensions (3.51 × 5.29 to 4.62 × 5.92 mm), germinability reduction at 15°°C related to 25°C (4% to 51%), germination rate at 25°C (44.0 to 48.5 seeds/day) and at 15°C (5.17 to 6.77 seeds/day), development reduction at 15°C related to 25°C (86.66% to 91.99%), levels of seed accumulated phenols (71 to 85 μg/seed), antioxidant potential (42% to 50% reduction of DPPH*), seed alcohol dehydrogenase activity (ADH) (180 to 1100 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min), highest ADH activity after imbibitions at 25°C (310.24 to 520.2 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min), and highest ADH activity after imbibitions at 15°C (170.74 to 440.71 μmol NAD+/mg protein/min). The variation in the seed vigor was revealed by a principal component analysis (PCA) based on all the parameters evaluated. PCA clearly discriminated among the three populations.

A survey for Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) and White spot syndrome Virus (WssV) was performed during two catching seasons of native shrimps in the Yucatan Coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The mtDNA COI barcode identified two endemic species;the southern pink shrimp Penaeus notialis (Pérez Fantante, 1967) and the northern pink shrimp Penaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1987) (previously described as Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis). The prevalence of IHHNV was of 18.18% in 2016, and of 8.57% in 2017. All organisms tested negative for WssV. This is the first identification of wild shrimps in the state of Yucatan Mexico by mtDNA COI barcode as well as the first identification of IHHNV in such species. The presence of IHHNV in wild shrimps populations has a potential of persisting in the coast of Yucatan with putative detrimental effect on local fisheries because once established in natural waters and hosts;such pathogens are almost impossible to eradicate.

AIM To develop metabonomic models(MMs), using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) spectra of serum, to predict significant liver fibrosis(sF: Metavir ≥ F2), advanced liver fibrosis(AF: METAVIR ≥ F3) and cirrhosis(C: METAVIR = F4 or clinical cirrhosis) in chronic hepatitis C(CHC) patients. Additionally, to compare the accuracy of the MMs with the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index(APRI) and fibrosis index based on four factors(FIB-4). METHODs sixty-nine patients who had undergone biopsy in the previous 12 mo or had clinical cirrhosis were included. The presence of any other liver disease was a criterion for exclusion. The MMs, constructed using partial least squares discriminant analysis and linear discriminant analysis formalisms, were tested by cross-validation, considering sF, AF and C. REsULTs Results showed that forty-two patients(61%) presented sF, 28(40%) AF and 18(26%) C. The MMs showed sensitivity and specificity of 97.6% and 92.6% to predict sF; 96.4% and 95.1% to predict AF; and 100% and 98.0% to predict C. Besides that, the MMs correctly classified all 27(39.7%) and 25(38.8%) patients with intermediate values of APRI and FIB-4, respectively. CONCLUsION The metabonomic strategy performed excellently in predicting significant and advanced liver fibrosis in CHC patients, including those in the gray zone of APRI and FIB-4, which may contribute to reducing the need for these patients to undergo liver biopsy.

The electrooxidation of hydrogen on platinum and gold electrodes is comparatively described in this paper. The reaction is faster on platinum than on the gold surface, because the reactive diffuses inside of the gold metal. This process is complicated with the lift of surface reconstruction of the (100) plane, which allows the fast penetration of the H atoms through the more open surface. The diffusion limiting current is then discontinued and the current falls. On platinum, the current fall occurs simultaneously with the metal oxide formation. It is assumed that the hydrogen helps the adsorbed OH group formation, which is the first step of metal oxidation, and it has been called “incipient hydrous oxide” (IHO). Current begins to fall slowly at the (IHO) potential. At higher potential the current falls abruptly.

乳品生产企业和销售商们经常会遇到在液奶及乳制品中加入干酪乳清的问题。近年来,通过分析酪蛋白糖巨肽(GMP)的含量来确定乳中是否掺杂干酪乳清。非免疫法检测乳制品中GMP既昂贵又耗时,而且灵敏度低。目前,开发了一种新的夹心酶联免疫法(ELIsA)实现了原料乳中乳清掺假问题的定性和定量检测;该方法以兔多克隆抗酪蛋白糖巨肽作为抗体,以已知浓度的液态干酪乳清(0.02%～20%)为标准品建立校正曲线。方法的检测限为0.047%(V/V),定量限为0.14%(V/V)。抗体具有专一性,与乳中其他成分(κ-酪蛋白除外)没有交叉反应,能够成功的用于乳制品中酪蛋白糖巨肽的检测。试验样品的检测回收率在95.62%～113.88%。批间和批内变异系数分别小于6%和7%。该抗体在3个月内,其准确度和重复性保持不变,并且可以随时取用。

Malaria endemic zones are mostly located on third world countries, where antimalarials are not easily found or patients cannot afford them, and in consequence, they must turn toward natural products or phytomedicines. In the present study, the effect of Hinotnia latiflora (Hl) methanolic stem bark extract (HlMeOHe) on the ultrastructure of the asexual intraerythrocytic stages of Plasmodium yoelii yoelii (Pyy) after a Peters’ four-day oral treatment was assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as the parasite development on blood smears, analyzed by light microscopy. Likewise, extract was subjected to qualitative tests adopting standard procedures for identification of phytoconstituents;its antioxidant activity was evaluated according to the method of Brand-Williams and by the radical cation decolorization assay. Results showed higher percentage of rings and lower percentage of trophozoites and schizonts in the treated animals, in comparison with those of the control groups, which demonstrated lower percentage of rings and trophozoites, and schizonts in higher number. Images of TEM showed in some treated parasites, mild parasite membranes, organelle swelling and ribosomal depletion. The phytochemical profile demonstrated that the extract contains alkaloids, tannis, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics and saponins. The obtained values of the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) in μg/mL, for both antioxidant assays were of 423.83 and 202.95 respectively. It is concluded that HlMeOHe altered the development of the intraerythrocytic asexual stages and the ultrastructure of Pyy, and due to its phytochemical constituents, showed an in vitro antioxidant activity.
