Edge detection based multi-material interface extraction on industrial CT volumes

X-ray CT scanning is recently becoming a popular technology for industrial applications as well as medical ones. Since the geometrical accuracy is often important for industrial applications, more precise methods for processing CT volumes are required. This paper proposes a method for extracting the multimaterial interfaces on CT volumes obtained by industrial CT scanners. Instead of extracting isosurfaces we detect edge-points, at which the norm of the volume gradient takes a local maximum in the gradient direction, and then interpolate the points as the material interfaces represented by the zero-level of compounded implicit functions. In order to achieve a robust material-identification, multilabel graph-cut is utilized in our method. Using edge-points, we can reduce the inaccuracy caused by CT scanning artifacts.

BACKGROUND The two main causes of gastric ulcer bleeding are Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection and ulcerogenic medicines,although the number of cases caused by each may vary with age.In Japan,the rate of H.pylori infection has fallen over the last decade and the number of prescriptions for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)and antithrombotic drugs is increasing as the population ages.Methods of treatment for gastric ulcer bleeding have advanced with the advent of hemostatic forceps and potassium-competitive acid blocker(P-CAB).Thus,causes and treatments for gastric ulcer bleeding have changed over the last decade.AIM To examine the trends of gastric ulcer bleeding over 10 years in the metropolitan area of Japan.METHODS This is a single-center retrospective study.A total of 564 patients were enrolled from inpatients admitted to our hospital with gastric ulcer bleeding between 2006 and 2016.Age,medication history,H.pylori infection,method of treatment,rate of rebleeding,and the length of hospitalization were analyzed.Factors associated with gastric ulcer bleeding were evaluated using Fisher’s exact test,Pearson’s Chi-squared test or Student’s t-test as appropriate.The Jonckheere-Terpstra test was used to evaluate trends.A per-protocol analysis was used to examine the rate of H.pylori infection.RESULTS There was a significant increase in the mean age over time(P<0.01).The rate of H.pylori infection tended to decrease over the study period(P=0.10),whereas the proportion of patients taking antithrombotic agents or NSAIDs tended to increase(P=0.07).Over time,the use of NSAIDs and antithrombotic drugs increased with age.By contrast,the rate of H.pylori infection during the study period fell with age.H.pylori-induced ulcers accounted for the majority of cases in younger patients(<70 years old);however,the rate decreased with age(P<0.01).The method of treatment trend has changed significantly over time.The main method of endoscopic hemostasis has changed from clipping and injection to forceps coagulation(P

Comparison of decompression tubes with metallic stents for the management of right-sided malignant colonic obstruction

BACKGROUND Emergency surgical resection is a standard treatment for right-sided malignant colonic obstruction; however, the procedure is associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Although a bridge to surgery can be created to obviate the need for emergency surgery, its effects on long-term outcomes and the most practical management strategies for right-sided malignant colonic obstruction remain unclear.AIM To determine the appropriate management approach for right-sided malignant colonic obstruction.METHODS Forty patients with right-sided malignant colonic obstruction who underwent curative resection from January 2007 to April 2017 were included in the study.We compared the perioperative and long-term outcomes of patients who received bridges to surgery established using decompression tubes and those created using self-expandable metallic stents(SEMS). The primary outcome was the overall survival duration(OS) and the secondary endpoints were the diseasefree survival(DFS) duration and the preoperative and postoperative morbidity rates. Analysis was performed on an intention-to-treat basis.RESULTS There were 21 patients in the decompression tube group and 19 in the SEMS group. There were no significant differences in the perioperative morbidity rates of the two groups. The OS rate was significantly higher in the decompression tube group than in the SEMS group(5-year OS rate; decompression tube 79.5%,SEMS 32%, P = 0.043). Multivariate analysis revealed that the bridge to surgery using a decompression tube was significantly associated with the OS(hazard ratio, 17.41; P = 0.004). The 3-year DFS rate was significantly higher in thedecompression tube group than in the SEMS group(68.9% vs 45.9%; log-rank test,P = 0.032). This paper proposes an H-infinity combustion control method for diesel engines. The plant model is the discrete dynamics model developed by Yasuda et al., which is implementable on a real engine control unit. We introduce a two-degree-of-freedom control scheme with a feedback controller and a feedforward controller. This scheme achieves both good feedback properties, such as disturbance suppression and robust stability, and a good transient response. The feedforward controller is designed by taking the inverse of the static plant model, and the feedback controller is designed by the H-infinity control method, which reduces the effect of the trubocharger lag. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in simulations using the nonlinear discrete dynamics model.

The preparation for an experimental soft x-ray tomography study on the Heliotron J (H-J) machine is carried out,with the objectives of evaluating the capability of the current soft x-ray tomographic system in terms of the identification of different mode structures and their poloidal rotation,and the axis shift with different plasma and machine parameters,and fixing the physics goals for the experimental study.These preparations were carried out via a simulated soft x-ray data set arising from different plasma conditions,such as magnetic islands,low beta and high beta.Soft x-ray tomography (SXT) is performed by the discrete pixel method including singular value decomposition and Phillips-Tikhonov regularization,to obtain clear and smooth images.The H-J soft x-ray tomography results from simulated soft x-rays for the equilibrium H-J plasma sensed the magnetic axis shift clearly and an estimate was also achieved.Successful reconstruction for mode structure m =1/n =1 was obtained along with the realization of the poloidal rotation of the structure.The reconstruction for the m =2/n =1 mode was not very clear for the current soft x-ray diagnostic design.Effective mode identification was not possible due to the lack of measurements.The SXT from the current soft x-ray diagnostic on H-J,the magnetic axis shift can be estimated and the m =1/n =1 mode can be studied.Study of higher poloidal modes is difficult with the current design.

Human induced pluripotent stem cells(hiPS cells or hiPSCs) can be derived from cells of patients with severe muscle disease. If skeletal muscle induced from patientiPSCs shows disease-specific phenotypes, it can be useful for studying the disease pathogenesis and for drug development. On the other hand, human iPSCs from healthy donors or hereditary muscle diseaseiPSCs whose genomes are edited to express normal protein are expected to be a cell source for cell therapy. Several protocols for the derivation of skeletal muscle from human iPSCs have been reported to allow the development of efficient treatments for devastating muscle diseases. In 2017, the focus of research is shifting to another stage:(1) the establishment of mature myofibers that are suitable for study of the pathogenesis of muscle disease;(2) setting up a highthroughput drug screening system; and(3) the preparation of highly regenerative, non-oncogenic cells in large quantities for cell transplantation, etc.

Early gastric cancer diagnostic ability of ultrathin endoscope loaded with laser light source

BACKGROUND Conventionally, the low luminous intensity, low image resolution, and difficulty in operation have been reported with the ultrathin endoscope. However, it has markedly advanced recently. The improvement of the diagnostic ability is expected.AIM To compare the early gastric cancer diagnostic ability of an ultrathin endoscope loaded with a laser light source and that of the conventional endoscope.METHODS The target subjects were 375 consecutive patients who underwent endoscopy at our hospital for post-endoscopic submucosal dissection follow-up of gastric cancer from January to August 2018. During endoscopy, the ultrathin endoscope was used in 140 patients(37.3%), and the conventional endoscope was used in235 patients(62.7%). Patient background was adjusted using the propensity score matching method, and gastric cancer detection ability was evaluated in the two groups.RESULTS The gastric cancer detection rate was 7.8% in the ultrathin endoscope group and7.0% in the conventional endoscope group, and the mean intragastric observation time was 4.1 ± 1.7 min in the ultrathin endoscope group and 4.1 ± 1.9 min in the conventional endoscope group, showing no significant differences between the groups. Moreover, the biopsy implementation rate was 31.8% in the ultrathin endoscope group and 41.1% in the conventional endoscope group, and the biopsy prediction rate was 17.9% and 13.2%, respectively, showing no significant differences between the groups.CONCLUSION The gastric cancer diagnostic ability of the ultrathin endoscope loaded with a laser light source was comparable to that of the conventional endoscope. The observation time was also comparable. Thus, endoscopy using the ultrathin endoscope loaded with the laser light source would be the first option in screening examinations of gastric cancer due to its low invasion.

针对将形状指数(SI)应用于三维图像时缺乏对应的推广形式,常通过计算三维图像的3个截面的SI来组合表达,导致在肠道肿瘤检测等应用中造成了大量的误检的问题,研究了三维情形SI的推广.首先选取球坐标系表达的单位球面以消除灰度变化尺度的影响;然后分析了球面的6个等价区域,并选取其一作为灰度变化的表征区域;由于SI原有的表达式不利于推广到三维空间,因此推导了一种等价的表达式,并通过分析此表达式在三维情形的推广,得到了描述三维图像局部灰度变化的指标——密度指数(DI).通过研究DI所表征区域的几何特性,得到了一条具有重要性质的曲线——逆Z线,并分析了其上典型特征点所对应的灰度变化模式.仿真实验结果表明,对于肠道肿瘤检测的典型情况,使用DI检测的误检率明显低于SI.
