Matrine promotes neural circuit remodeling to regulate motor function in a mouse model of chronic spinal cord injury

In chronic phase of spinal cord injury, functional recovery is more untreatable compared with early intervention in acute phase of spinal cord injury. In the last decade, several combination therapies successfully improved motor dysfunction in chronic spinal cord injury. However, their effectiveness is not sufficient. We previously found a new effective compound for spinal cord injury, matrine, which induced axonal growth and functional recovery in acute spinal cord injury mice via direct activation of extracellular heat shock protein 90. Although our previous study clarified that matrine was an activator of extracellular heat shock protein 90, the potential of matrine for spinal cord injury in chronic phase has not been sufficiently evaluated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether matrine ameliorates chronic spinal cord injury in mice. Once daily intragastric administration of matrine(100 μmol/kg per day) to spinal cord injury mice were starte at 28 days after injury, and continued for 154 days. Continuous mat rine treatment improved hindlimb motor function in chronic spinal cord injury mice. In injured spinal cords of the matrine-treated mice, the density of neurofilament-H-positive axons was increased. Moreover, matrine treatment increased the density of bassoon-positive presynapses in contact with choline acetyltransferase-positive motor neurons in the lumbar spinal cord. These findings suggest that matrine promotes remodeling and reconnection of neural circuits to regulate hindlimb movement. All protocols were approved by the Committee for Animal Care and Use of the Sugitani Campus of the University of Toyama(approval No. A2013 INM-1 and A2016 INM-3) on May 7, 2013 and May 17, 2016, respectively.

Information for Disaster Preparedness: A Social Network Approach to Rainwater Harvesting Technology Dissemination

Rainwater harvesting technology is considered an innovative and effective mechanism for reducing drinking water risks due to arsenic contamination and water salinity in coastal Bangladesh. However, adoption of such tanks remains elusive. Most studies on disaster risk communication are predominantly based on individuallevel cognitive modeling approaches, which fail to address the role of social groups, human relations, and other collective social factors in the dissemination process of disaster preventive measures. From the viewpoint of social implementation, community adoption of unfamiliar technology for disaster risk mitigation and preparedness requires another approach. Given the challenge to promote rainwater harvesting technology in the study area of coastal Bangladesh, this study examines the role of various social networks including cohesive groups(friends), structural equivalent groups(individuals who have the same position in society), and spatial groups(neighbors) in three information sharing and processing activities—hearing, observation, and discussion. Results show that those individuals who have similar cohesive affiliations tend to become hearing and discussion partners. Cohesive groups share a learning opportunity and are bounded by normative constraints in terms of direct and intimate social *** groups facilitate observation, which provides visual learning. Structurally equivalent groups are not relevant in adoption dissemination;therefore competition or similar social environment did not influence the rainwater tank dissemination activities.

AIM:To investigate the causal relationship between hypoadiponectinemia and colorectal carcinogenesis in in vivo experimental model,and to determine the con-tribution of adiponectin defi ciency to colorectal cancer development and ***:We examined the influence of adiponectin defi ciency on colorectal carcinogenesis induced by the administration of azoxymethane(AOM)(7.5 mg/kg,in-traperitoneal injection once a week for 8 wk),by using adiponectin-knockout(KO) ***:At 53 wk after the fi rst AOM treatment,KOmice developed larger and histologically more progres-sive colorectal tumors with greater frequency com-pared with wild-type(WT) mice,although the tumor incidence was not different between WT and KO *** mice showed increased cell proliferation of colorec-tal tumor cells,which correlated with the expression levels of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) in the colorectal *** addition,KO mice showed higher incidence and frequency of liver tumors after AOM *** percent of WT mice developed liver tumors,and these WT mice had only a single *** contrast,50% of KO mice developed liver tumors,and 58% of these KO mice had multiple ***:Adiponectin deficiency enhances colorectal carcinogenesis and liver tumor formation induced by AOM in *** study strongly suggests that hypoadiponectinemia could be involved in the pathogenesis for colorectal cancer and liver tumor in human subjects.

Development of a Leg Mechanism for Soft Landing Based on Biological Motion

Surface Grafting of Polymers onto Nano-Sized Particles in Solvent-Free Dry-System and in Ionic Liquid

We have reported the grafting of various polymers onto the surface of inorganic nano-sized particles, such as silica, titanium oxide, and carbon black[1]. The polymer-grafted nano-sized particles are known to have excellent properties, such as a good dispersibility in solvents and polymer matrices[1,2]. However, scale-up production of polymer-grafted nano-sized particles was hardly achieved, because complicated procedures, such as centrifugation, filtration, and solvent extraction, are needed for the production of polymer-grafted nano-sized particles, and a lot of abolishing solvent comes out.

The background, purpose, and design of this special section are briefly explained in this introductory article. Three aspects emerged from the articles in this special section and are highlighted to provide a frame of reference for the reader:(1) a paradigm shift towards adaptive and integrative disaster risk governance;(2) a framework that situates adaptive and integrative risk governance in the context of transformation toward sustainability; and(3) the introduction of ‘‘implementation science'' as a concept, method, and emerging field that brings natural and social sciences, engineering, and humanities jointly to bear in risk mitigation and adaptation.

Identification of two metallo- thionein isoforms by molecular cloning of their cDNAs in fresh-water fish,crucian carp (Carassius-cuvieri)

Generally, there are two major isoforms of me-tallothionein (MT) in mammals. In this study two cDNAs of metallothionein, MT-A and MT-B, in a fresh-water fish, crucian carp (Carassius cuvieri), were cloned by the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The homology of their reading frame is about 92.3%. The sequence analysis of both cDNAs gave the structures of coding regions corresponding to 60 amino acid residues, and the structures of complete 3’ -untranslated regions in which a significant difference in the size of their 3’-untranslated regions (130 bp for MT-A and 280 bp for MT-B) exists. The results of amino acid sequencing of both MT-1 and MT-2 purified by HPLC are identical to those deduced from MT cDNA genes, indicating that MT-1 is from MT-A gene and MT-2 is from MT-B gene respectively. No blocking in the N-terminal of MT-2 isoform was the first case found in vertebrates, most of which were blocked by acetylation. These results suggest that there were differential controls at the

Diagnosis of ectopic pancreas by endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration
