Crystallization and Crystalline Structure of Syndiotactic Polypropylene and Syndiotactic-Poly(1-Butene) Blend

The crystallization and crystalline structure of syndiotactic-polypropylene (sPP) and syndiotactic-poly(1-butene) (sPB) blend containing 10 (Bl-10), 25 (Bl-25), 50 (Bl-50), 75 (Bl-75), and 90 (Bl-90) wt% of sPB, have been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FT-IR, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analyses. The melt-crystallization behavior of the blend samples was studied by DSC on the cooling process at constant rates. Bl-50, Bl-75, and Bl-90 showed lower crystallization temperatures than the neat sPP. sPP in Bl-75 showed the lowest crystallization rate among the blend samples. Bl-90 showed a two-phase molten state, and sPP in Bl-90 crystallized via two-stepprocess. Time evolution of FT-IR spectroscopy at room temperature detected conformational transformation of the sPP polymer chain in the blend samples of Bl-50 and Bl-75. The absorption peaks intensity in the FT-IR spectra derived from the helical conformations in the crystalline phase decreased, and the planar zigzag conformations in the amorphous and mesophase phases decreased over the crystallization time. The time evolution of the WAXD profile of Bl-90 indicated that sPP in the blend accelerated the crystallization of sPB. The crystallized Bl-10, Bl-25, and Bl-50 samples showed diffraction peaks in WAXD profiles and melting endothermic peak in DSC profiles derived from only the sPP crystal. The crystallinity and melting temperature of sPP in the crystallized Bl-10, Bl-25, and Bl-50 samples were almost independent of the sPB content. Both the crystalline structure of sPP and sPB were detected in Bl-75 and Bl-90. Bl-75 showed the lowest crystallinity and melting temperature of sPP among the blend samples.

Explanation vs Performance in Data Mining: A Case Study with Predicting Runaway Projects

Often, the explanatory power of a learned model must be traded off against model performance. In the case of predict-ing runaway software projects, we show that the twin goals of high performance and good explanatory power are achievable after applying a variety of data mining techniques (discrimination, feature subset selection, rule covering algorithms). This result is a new high water mark in predicting runaway projects. Measured in terms of precision, this new model is as good as can be expected for our data. Other methods might out-perform our result (e.g. by generating a smaller, more explainable model) but no other method could out-perform the precision of our learned model.

Odor-Active Volatile Compounds from the Gonads of the Sea Urchin <i>Mesocentrotus nudus</i>in the Wild in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan

Background and Aims: Mesocentrotus nudus is commercially harvested from shallow rocky bottoms in northern Japan. The gonads are targeted as an edible product. The objective of this study was to identify odor-active volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the gonads of adult M. nudus collected at a fishing ground in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan. Methods and Results: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and gas chromatography-sniffing techniques identified 42 compounds categorized as alcohols, aldehydes, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, halomethanes, hydrocarbons, ketones, sulfur-containing compounds, and nitrogen-containing compounds. GC-sniffing analysis characterized four compounds with preferable odors of sea urchin gonads;limonene, propyl acetate, acetone, dibromochloromethane. On the other hand, the analysis characterized three compounds with unpreferable odors;methyl mercaptane, dimethyl sulfide, and s-methyl thioacetate. Several VOCs from the gonads were derived from seaweeds, terrestrial plants, and fish flesh as food because M. nudus is omnivorous. Conclusion: This is the first study to identify VOCs from edible sea urchin gonads in the wild in Japan. These VOC data comprise a typical standard in order to evaluate a higher quality of sea urchin gonads.

目的研究藁本内酯对神经干/祖细胞(neural stem/progenitor cells,NS/PCs)的增殖作用及机制。方法孕14 d Wistar大鼠脱颈椎处死,分离胎鼠脑皮层部位NS/PCs,采用悬浮法原代培养7 d。采用WST-1法检测藁本内酯对NS/PCs存活率的影响;采用Western blotting法检测藁本内酯对NS/PCs增殖相关蛋白磷酸化蛋白激酶B(phosphorylated protein kinase B,p-Akt)、Akt、磷酸化糖原合成酶激酶(phosphorylated glycose synthase kinase 3β,p-GSK3β)、GSK3β和active-β-catenin表达;给予藁本内酯第1-3天,观察NS/PCs神经球生长状态并测量其直径;分化培养基诱导NS/PCs分化5 d后,采用免疫荧光法检测藁本内酯对NS/PCs分化类型的影响,并采用WST-1法检测藁本内酯对分化细胞存活率的影响。结果藁本内酯(25μmol/L)显著促进NS/PCs存活率(P<0.05),显著上调增殖相关蛋白p-Akt/Akt和active-β-catenin表达(P<0.05);给予藁本内酯第1-3天,可增加NS/PCs神经球直径,但无统计学差异;藁本内酯对神经元、星型胶质细胞方向分化无显著影响,但分化后细胞存活率显著升高(P<0.05)。结论藁本内酯可促进NS/PCs增殖,其作用机制与Akt/β-catenin通路有关。藁本内酯可能对神经元、星型胶质细胞以外的其他分化类型细胞有干预作用。

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma responds to MK615, a compound extract from the Japanese apricot “Prunus mume ”

MK615, a compound extracted from the Japanese apricot "Prunus mume " has been reported to have in vitro anti-tumor activities against several cancer cell lines,including hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). However, the clinical effects and feasibility of administering MK615for patients with HCC were unknown. We experienced a case with advanced HCC for which MK615 was effective against both lymph node and pulmonary metastases. A 60-year-old female underwent surgical resection of a 9 cm HCC in the right lobe. The pathological diagnosis was moderately differentiated HCC with vascular invasion. The HCC recurred in the liver 8 mo after the surgery. Radiofrequency ablation and transarterial infusion chemotherapy were performed, but the recurrence was not controlled. One year after the intrahepatic recurrence, pulmonary and lymph metastasis *** was administered, but was not ***, MK615 was administered as a final alternative therapy after informed consent was obtained from the patient. Three months later, her alpha-fetoprotein level decrease and both the lymph node and pulmonary metastases decreased in size. The patient has survived for more than 17 mo after the MK615 administration, and was in good condition. Although further investigations are necessary to clarify its safety and efficacy in humans, MK615 may be useful for the treatment of HCC,without serious adverse effects.

Who needs further evaluations to diagnose upper urinary tract urothelial cancers among patients with abnormal findings by enhanced CT?

Objective:We evaluated who would need further evaluations such as retrograde pyelography(RP)and/or ureteroscopy to diagnose upper urinary tract urothelial cancers(UUTUCs)when abnormal findings for the upper urinary tract(UUT)were detected by enhanced computed tomography(CT).Methods:We retrospectively analyzed 125 patients who underwent enhanced CT for various reasons and had abnormal findings for the *** whose tumors were suspected to be of extraureteral origin were *** patients received RP and/or ureteroscopy to evaluate the ***:The median age of the 125 patients was 70 years and gross hematuria(26.4%)was the most frequently observed ***,ureteroscopy and both were performed for 121,59 and 55 patients,*** revealed tumor-like lesions in 58 patients and the other patients had non-tumor-like *** were found in 43(34.4%)of the 125 *** of them had tumor-like lesions on *** 58 patients who had tumor-like lesions on CT,univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that tumor diameter and tumor enhancement were significant predictive factors for *** curve analysis of enhanced CT to diagnose UUTUCs revealed that a tumor diameter of 18 mm was the best cutoff *** sensitivity,specificity and accuracy were 90.0%,98.8% and 92.7% for RP and 95.5%,100% and 97.1%for ureteroscopy,*** of them had high sensitivity,specificity and ***:We should decide to evaluate the UUT according to the tumor diameter on enhanced *** we evaluate the UUT in patients with tumor diameters of less than 20 mm,ureteroscopy is recommended.

Predictive factors for the failure of endoscopic stent-instent self-expandable metallic stent placement to treat malignant hilar biliary obstruction

AIM To investigate the factors predictive of failure when placing a second biliary self-expandable metallic stents(SEMSs). METHODS This study evaluated 65 patients with an unresectable malignant hilar biliary obstruction who were examined in our hospital. Sixty-two of these patients were recruited to the study and divided into two groups: the success group, which consisted of patients in whom a stent-in-stent SEMS had been placed successfully, and the failure group, which consisted of patients in whom the stent-in-stent SEMS had not been placed successfully. We compared the characteristics of the patients, the stricture state of their biliary ducts, and the implemented endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) procedures between the two *** The angle between the target biliary duct stricture and the first implanted SEMS was significantly larger in the failure group than in the success group. There were significantly fewer wire or dilation devices(ERCP catheter, dilator, or balloon catheter) passing the first SEMS cell in the failure group than in the success group. The cut-off value of the angle predicting stent-in-stent SEMS placement failure was 49.7 degrees according to the ROC curve(sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 61.2%). Furthermore, the angle was significantly smaller in patients with wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell than in patients without wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell. CONCLUSION A large angle was identified as a predictive factor for failure of stent-in-stent SEMS placement.

Potential Power of the Pyramidal Structure III: Discovery of Pyramid Effects with and without Seasonal Variation

Since October 2007, we have been conducting rigorous scientific research on the unexplained “power” of a pyramidal structure (PS). From our research results so far, we could classify the pyramid effects by the PS into the following two types. (i) The pyramid effects in which the PS converted the test subject’s unexplained energy to affect biosensors when the test subject entered the PS and meditated. (ii) The pyramid effects in which the potential power of the PS affected biosensors if the test subject had not been inside the PS for at least 20 days and the test subject’s unexplained energy was excluded. In this paper, we report new results regarding (ii). As a result of dividing a year according to the four seasons of winter, spring, summer, and autumn and analyzing the pyramid effect of each period, the following points were found. 1) There was a pyramid effect without seasonal variation. The pyramid effect on the lower and upper layers was different throughout the year for the biosensors placed at the PS apex in two layers, regardless of the season. 2) There was a pyramid effect with seasonal variation. The value of the psi index, which indicates the magnitude of the pyramid effect, changed as the seasons changed, while different pyramid effects were maintained on the lower and upper layers. Regarding the change in the pyramid effect depending on the season, the psi index in summer was larger than that in winter in both the lower and upper layers. From these results, we found that there are two types of potential power at the PS apex: seasonal potential power and non-seasonal potential power.

Ectopic Hormone Production from Ovarian Tumor: A Review

Although ectopic hormone-production is uncommon complication, certain tumors can produce symptoms due to the secretion of various bioactive substances accompanied by the aberrantly located tumors. Because of the potential for the ovary to act as a source of aberrant hormone secretion, in the literature, ectopic hormone production from ovarian tumor includes granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), peptide-YY, gastrin and insulin. All patients may present with syndromes of hormone excess. Failure to localize the ovarian tumor preoperatively may be associated with a significantly higher risk of subsequent unnecessary ablative procedures. Better characterization of hormonal forms relatively specific for neoplasia may enhance the clinical value of ectopic hormones as tumor markers, especially in malignancies that are commonly associated with ectopic hormone production. These circumstances may recommend complete preoperative evaluation of the pelvis in female patients presenting with nonlocalizable endocrine tumors.
