The rational design of emulsions requires study of the main factors that influence their formation, physicochemical properties and, consequently, stability and performance. The use of vegetable oils in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries has recently become attractive. Dipteryx alata Vogel(D. alata) is an oleaginous species native to Brazil. The seeds of this species contain highly unsaturated oil with significant amounts of tocopherols and phytosterols, representing an important source of agents capable of combatting oxidative processes. In this work, a lamellar gel phase emulsion using oil extracted from the seeds of D. alata(baru) was developed. The steps involved in the development of this research were as follows: 1) development of formulations and 2) in vitro assays by simulating the evaporation of the final product after application to the skin and Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy(EPR) of fatty acid spin labels was used to investigate the profile of interaction of the dispersed systems with stratum corneum(SC) lipids. The results indicate that the developed system shows no signs of instability during the storage period. Moreover, EPR studies indicated that D. alata oil and especially the developed formulation were able to increase SC lipid fluidity and extract a fatty-acid spin label from the lipid domain structures of SC, demonstrating its potential to act as a drug or skin care vehicle.

The oxides SrMo_(1-x)Fe_(x)O_(3-δ)(x=0.1 and 0.2)have recently been described as excellent anode materials for solid-oxide fuel cells at intermediate temperatures(IT-SOFC)with LSGM as the *** this work we have partially replaced Sr by Ba in a compound of formula Sr_(0.9)Ba_(0.1)Mo_(0.9)Fe_(0.1)O_(3-δ),in order to expand the unit-cell size and thereby improve the ionic diffusion of O^(2-)ions through the crystal *** anode materials must be stable under reducing conditions,since they work in the presence of the fuel(H_(2))at elevated *** anodes are inspired in the SrMoO_(3)perovskite,which contains Mo4+ions,stable in very reducing *** novel oxide has been structurally characterized from x-ray(XRD)and neutron powder diffraction(NPD)data;the structure is defined at room temperature in the Pm-3m space group,and shows oxygen vacancies,necessary for the performance of this material as mixed ionic-electronic(MIEC)*** single test cells supported on LSGM,the materials generated output powers close to 500 mW/cm^(2)at 850℃using pure H_(2)as *** thermal expansion is linear,with TEC=10.93×10^(-6)K^(-1).The chemical compatibility with the LSGM electrolyte was also verified.

Joints in unsaturated rocks:Thermo-hydro-mechanical formulation and constitutive behaviour

A formulation for the coupled analysis of thermo-hydro-mechanical （THM） problems in joints is first presented. The work involves the establishment of equilibrium and mass and energy balance equations. Balance equations were formulated taking into account two phases： water and air. The joint element developed was implemented in a general purpose finite element computer code for THM analysis of porous media （Code_Bright）. The program was then used to study a number of cases ranging from laboratory tests to large scale in situ tests. A numerical simulation of coupled hydraulic shear tests of rough granite joints is first presented. The tests as well as the model show the coupling between permeability and the deformation of thejoints. The experimental investigation was focused on the effects of suction on the mechanical behaviour of rock joints. Laboratory tests were performed in a direct shear cell equipped with suction control. Suction was imposed using a vapour forced convection circuit connected to the cell and controlled by an air pump. Artificial joints of Lilla claystone were *** roughness of varying intensity was created by carving the surfaces in contact in such a manner that rock ridges of different tip angles were formed. These angles ranged from 0° （smooth joint） to 45° （very rough joint profile）. The geometric profiles of the two surfaces in contact were initially positioned in a ＂matching＂ situation. Several tests were performed for different values of suctions （200, 100, and 20 MPa） and for different values of vertical stresses （30, 60, and 150 kPa）. A constitutive model including the effects of suction and joint roughness is proposed to simulate the unsaturated behaviour of rock joints. The new constitutive law was incorporated in the code and experimental results were numerically simulated.

Study of reverse osmosis membranes fouling by inorganic salts and colloidal particles during seawater desalination

Fouling phenomenon is considered among the major reasons that cause significant increase of operating cost of desalination plants equipped with reverse osmosis(RO)*** phenomenon is studied in the present work in the case of RO polyamide aromatic membranes using model seawater containing inorganic salts and colloidal *** solubility conditions of CaCO3 and CaSO4 were applied to study RO performances with and without colloid *** experiments,the membrane permeate fluxes were continuously ***,studies of chemical composition,structure,and morphology of the materials deposited on the membrane surface were conducted using energy dispersive microanalysis(EDS)X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy(SEM).Results show that in conditions of calcium carbonate oversaturation there is a reduction in the permeate flow of 11.2%due to fouling of the membrane by the precipitation of this *** in the same conditions of calcium sulphate oversaturation the reduction of the flow is 5%,so we can conclude that in conditions of oversaturation of both salts,calcium carbonate produces a greater fouling of the membrane that in its view causes greater decrease in the flow of *** this based on the results of the test with both salts in oversaturated *** in the formation of calcite and gypsum crystals onto the membranes as XRD analyses *** presence of colloidal silica in those conditions intensifies strongly the fouling,leading until to 24.1%of permeate flux decrease.

Towards full repair of defects in reduced graphene oxide films by two-step graphitization

The complete restoration of a perfect carbon lattice has been a central issue in the research on graphene derived from graphite oxide since this preparation route was first proposed several years ago, but such a goal has so far remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the highly defective structure of reduced graphene oxide sheets assembled into free-standing, paper-like films can be fully repaired by means of high temperature annealing （graphitization）. Characterization of the films by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy indicated that the main stages in the transformation of the films were （i） complete removal of oxygen functional groups and generation of atomic vacancies （up to 1,500 ~C）, and （ii） vacancy annihilation and coalescence of adjacent overlapping sheets to yield continuous polycrystalline layers （1,800-2,700 ~C） similar to those of highly oriented graphites. The prevailing type of defect in the polycrystalline layers were the grain boundaries separating neighboring domains, which were typically a few hundred nanometers in lateral size, exhibited long-range graphitic order and were virtually free of even atomic-sized defects. The electrical conductivity of the annealed films was as high as 577,000 S-m-1, which is by far the largest value reported to date for any material derived from graphene oxide, and strategies for further improvement without the need to resort to higher annealing temperatures are suggested. Overall, this work opens the prospect of truly achieving a complete restoration of the carbon lattice in graphene oxide materials.

Existing studies have challenged the current definition of named bacterial species,especially in the case of highly recombinogenic *** has led to considering the use of computational procedures to examine potential bacterial clusters that are not identified by species *** paper describes the use of sequence data obtained from MLST databases as input for a k-means algorithm extended to deal with housekeeping gene sequences as a metric of similarity for the clustering *** implementation of the k-means algorithm has been developed based on an existing source code implementation,and it has been evaluated against MLST *** point out to potential bacterial clusters that are close to more than one different named species and thus may become candidates for alternative classifications accounting for genotypic *** use of hierarchical clustering with sequence comparison as similarity metric has the potential to find clusters different from named species by using a more informed cluster formation strategy than a conventional nominal variant of the algorithm.

In this paper we obtain a criterion under which the bijectivity of the canonical morphism of a weak Galois extension associated to a weak invertible entwining structure is equivalent to the existence of a strong connection form. Also we obtain an explicit formula for a strong connection under equivariant projective conditions or under coseparability conditions.

Retinal and optic nerve diseases are degenerative ocular pathologies which lead to irreversible visual loss. Since the advanced therapies availability, cell-based therapies offer a new all-encompassing approach. Advances in the knowledge of neuroprotection, immunomodulation and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) have been obtained by several preclinical studies of various neurodegenerative diseases. It has provided the opportunity to perform the translation of this knowledge to prospective treatment approaches for clinical practice. Since 2008, several first steps projecting new treatment approaches, have been taken regarding the use of cell therapy in patients with neurodegenerative pathologies of optic nerve and retina. Most of the clinical trials using MSCs are in Ⅰ/Ⅱ phase, recruiting patients or ongoing, and they have as main objective the safety assessment of MSCs using various routes of administration. However, it is important to recognize that, there is still a long way to go to reach clinical trials phase Ⅲ-Ⅳ. Hence, it is necessary to continue preclinical and clinical studies to improve this new therapeutic tool. This paper reviews the latest progress of MSCs in human clinical trials for retinal and optic nerve diseases.

Multiphase modeling of fluid dynamic in ladle steel operations under non-isothermal conditions

A numerical simulation was performed to study the flow pattern,mixing time and open-eye slag produced by argon gas injection in an industrial scale steel ladle under non-isothermal *** liquid steel remains 5min before the injection,and thermal stratification and convective flows were *** different sequences in stages employing various argon-gas flow rates were *** the first case,a sequence with the highest flow rates of argon was applied,while in the second and the third sequences,the intermediate and the lowest flow rates of argon gas were used,*** determining the chemistry homogenization,the mixing time was computed and analyzed in all three *** was found that the cold steel is located near the walls while the steel with a high temperature is accumulated in the center of the ladle above the argon-gas *** higher and lower flows promote a faster chemistry homogenization owing to the secondary recirculations that are developed closer to the *** results from steel temperature drop show a good concordance with plant trial measurements.
