Anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs in mangrove sediment with amendment of NaHCO_3

Mangrove sediment is unique in chemical and biological properties. Many of them suffer polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon（PAH） contamination. However, the study on PAH biological remediation for mangrove sediment is deficient. Enriched PAH-degrading microbial consortium and electron acceptor amendment are considered as two effective measures. Compared to other electron acceptors, the study on CO2, which is used by methanogens, is still seldom. This study investigated the effect of Na HCO3 amendment on the anaerobic biodegradation of four mixed PAHs, namely fluorene（Fl）, phenanthrene（Phe）,fluoranthene（Flua） and pyrene（Pyr）, with or without enriched PAH-degrading microbial consortium in mangrove sediment slurry. The trends of various parameters, including PAH concentrations, microbial population size, electron-transport system activities, electron acceptor and anaerobic gas production were monitored. The results revealed that the inoculation of enriched PAH-degrading consortium had a significant effect with half lives shortened by 7–13 days for 3-ring PAHs and 11–24 days for 4-ring PAHs. While Na HCO3 amendment did not have a significant effect on the biodegradation of PAHs and other parameters, except that CO2 gas in the headspace of experimental flasks was *** of the possible reasons is that mangrove sediment contains high concentrations of other electron acceptors which are easier to be utilized by anaerobic bacteria, the other one is that the anaerobes in mangrove sediment can produce enough CO2 gas even without adding Na HCO3.

Down Protein C and S Antigen Could Be Predictor of Mortality Outcome in Critical Egyptian COVID-19 Illness

Background: One of the most serious morbidity and mortality features in COVID-19 is thrombo-embolic manifestation with disturbed hemostasis in natural anticoagulant. Protein S plays a critical role in cytokine storming and acts as cross talk between immune status and coagulation process. So, we aimed to address its role in addition to protein C in severity and outcome of disease, with its role in vaccinated people by AstraZeneca. Methods: The present study was conducted on 70 COVID-19 positive by real-time PCR. 40 of patients had moderate symptoms of respiratory, 30 cases were admitted into ICU of Mansoura University Hospital, some of them under mechanical ventilator. In addition to 40 healthy volunteers after first dose of vaccinated AstraZenka as reference, assessment of protein C&S antigen was done by ELIZA. Results: Significant increase in total leucocytic count in COVID-19 than vaccinated volunteer with significant reduction in absolute lymphocytosis, increased neutrophilia. First significant observation was higher MPV in COVID-19 than vaccinated, in addition to significantly higher C-reactive protein in severe cases than moderate and vaccinated. Prominent interesting finding in our study was significant reduction in Protein C&S in severe cases than moderate and vaccinated. Logistic regression analysis revealed that both could be predictor of mortality outcome as CRP in COVID-19 illness. Conclusion: There was significant reduction in protein C&S in severe cases than moderate and vaccinated. Regression analysis shows that could be predictor of mortality as well as CRP, D-dimer. Large extended study and follow up are needed to assess the incidence of thromboembolism and role of protein C&S in different variety protocols of vaccination programs.

ten-a overexpression causes abnormal pattern in the Drosophila compound eye

Ten-a is one of the two Drosophila proteins that belong to the Ten M protein family. This protein is a type Ⅱ transmembrane protein and is expressed mainly in the embryonic CNS, in the larval eye imaginal disc and in the compound eye of the pupa. Here, we investigate the role of ten-α during development of the compound eye by using the Gal4/ UAS system to induce ten-α overexpression in the developing eye. We found that overexpression of ten-α can perturb eye development during all stages examined. In an early stage, overexpression of ten-α in eye primordial cells caused small and rough eyes and interfered with photoreceptor cell recruitment, resulting in some ommatidia having fewer or extra photoreceptor cells. Conversely, ten-α overexpression daring ommatidial formation caused severe eye defects due to absence of many cellular components. Interestingly, overexpression of ten-α in the late stage developing ommatidial cluster affected the number of pigment cells, caused cone cells proliferation in many ommatidia, and caused some photoreceptor cell defects. These results suggest that ten-α may be a novel gene required for normal eye morphogenesis.

Development of a new connection for precast concrete walls subjected to cyclic loading

The Industrialized Building System （IBS） was recently introduced to minimize the time and cost of project construction. Accordingly, ensuring the integration of the connection of precast components in IBS structures is an important factor that ensures stability of buildings subjected to dynamic loads from earthquakes, vehicles, and machineries. However, structural engineers still lack knowledge on the proper connection and detailed joints o fiBS structure construction. Therefore, this study proposes a special precast concrete wall-to-wall connection system for dynamic loads that resists multidirectional imposed loads and reduces vibration effects （PI2014701723）. This system is designed to connect two adjacent precast wall panels by using two steel U-shaped channels （i.e., male and female joints）. During casting, each joint is adapted for incorporation into a respective wall panel after considering the following conditions： one side of the steel channel opens into the thickness face of the panel; a U-shaped rubber is implemented between the two channels to dissipate the vibration effect; and bolts and nuts are used to create an extension between the two U-shaped male and female steel channels. The developed finite element model of the precast wall is subjected to cyclic loads to evaluate the performance of the proposed connection during an imposed dynamic load. Connection performance is then compared with conventional connections based on the energy dissipation, stress, deformation, and concrete damage in the plastic range. The proposed precast connection is capable of exceeding the energy absorption of precast walls subjected to dynamic load, thereby improving its resistance behavior in all principal directions.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a very complex disease that causes brain failure,then eventually,dementia *** is a global health problem.99%of clinical trials have failed to limit the progression of this *** risks and barriers to detecting AD are huge as pathological events begin decades before appearing clinical *** for AD are likely to be more helpful if the diagnosis is determined early before the final stage of neurological *** this regard,the need becomes more urgent for biomarker-based detection.A key issue in understanding AD is the need to solve complex and high-dimensional datasets and heterogeneous biomarkers,such as genetics,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),cerebrospinal fluid(CSF),and cognitive *** an interpretable reasoning system and performing interoperability that achieves in terms of a semantic model is potentially very ***,our aim in this work is to propose an interpretable approach to detect AD based on Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis ontology(ADDO)and the expression of semantic web rule language(SWRL).This work implements an ontology-based application that exploits three different machine learning *** models are random forest(RF),JRip,and J48,which have been used along with the voting *** dataset was used for this *** proposed classifier’s result with the voting ensemble achieves a higher accuracy of 94.1%and precision of 94.3%.Our approach provides effective inference ***,it contributes to a real,accurate,and interpretable classifier model based on various AD biomarkers for inferring whether the subject is a normal cognitive(NC),significant memory concern(SMC),early mild cognitive impairment(EMCI),late mild cognitive impairment(LMCI),or AD.

Remediation effect of compost on soluble mercury transfer in a crop of Phaseolus vulgaris

We studied the dynamics of mercury（Hg） transfer in Phaseolus vulgaris plants grown in soil with Hg-doped compost at the maximum levels permitted by Colombian law on organic amendments. Quantitative evaluation of transfer was made in different plant organs： roots,stem, leaves, pods and seeds. Matrix effect was determined in doped soil assays, using soil with and without addition of compost. Results showed that the use of organic matter reduced Hg transfer to the plant and the amount transferred was differentially distributed to the organs. We observed an inverse relationship between concentration and distance from the body to the root. It was evident that transfer was mediated by quantitative factors;the greater the presence of mercury in soil, the larger the amount that will be *** also indicate the remedial effect of compost and the presence of a barrier, at the root level, against mercury translocation to the plant aerial parts.

The kinetics of camphene production in liquid phase from α-pinene was experimentally determined in an isothermal batch reactor. To this end, a sulfated ZrO2 catalyst was used and the reaction studied in the temperature range of 370-403 K. By analyzing the experimental data, second reaction order for α-pinene was found. A kinetic model is presented which includes term for the catalyst load used. The specific rate constant at 393K was 2.19×10^-3 mol·L^-1·min^-1, the activation energy being 93kJ·mo1·^-1. Both values are within the range of literature results.

Stem cell-derived exosomes-an emerging tool for myocardial regeneration

Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs) continue to represent the number one cause of death and disability in industrialized countries. The most severe form of CVD is acute myocardial infarction(AMI), a devastating disease associated with high mortality and disability. In a substantial proportion of patients who survive AMI, loss of functional cardiomyocytes as a result of ischaemic injury leads to ventricular failure, resulting in significant alteration to quality of life and increased mortality. Therefore, many attempts have been made in recent years to identify new tools for the regeneration of functional cardiomyocytes. Regenerative therapy currently represents the ultimate goal for restoring the function of damaged myocardium by stimulating the regeneration of the infarcted tissue or by providing cellsthat can generate new myocardial tissue to replace the damaged tissue. Stem cells(SCs) have been proposed as a viable therapy option in these cases. However, despite the great enthusiasm at the beginning of the SC era, justified by promising initial results, this therapy has failed to demonstrate a significant benefit in large clinical trials. One interesting finding of SC studies is that exosomes released by mesenchymal SCs(MSCs) are able to enhance the viability of cardiomyocytes after ischaemia/reperfusion injury, suggesting that the beneficial effects of MSCs in the recovery of functional myocardium could be related to their capacity to secrete exosomes. Ten years ago, it was discovered that exosomes have the unique property of transferring miRNA between cells, acting as miRNA nanocarriers. Therefore, exosomebased therapy has recently been proposed as an emerging tool for cardiac regeneration as an alternative to SC therapy in the post-infarction period. This review aims to discuss the emerging role of exosomes in developing innovative therapies for cardiac regeneration as well as their potential role as candidate biomarkers or for developing new diagnostic tools.

Dietary analysis of Homonota darwini (Squamata:Gekkonidae) in Northern Patagonia

Our study investigated the diet of the southernmost gecko in the world, Homonota darwini. Fifty-three specimenswere captured during spring and summer in four locations in Patagonia, Argentina. The stomach contents of the specimens wereidentified, and we found that prey consisted of six main groups: Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Homoptera and Araneae, and theadults and larvae of moth Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera was the major dietary component. The presence of ants and moths as commonprey suggests an ambush feeding strategy. In spring, females consumed more ants than males although no other dietary differencesbetween males and females were evident. We found nine geckos with empty stomachs and six parasitized by *** of empty stomachs corroborates previous observations of other nocturnal geckos and non-gecko lizards. Reduced foragingsuccess of nocturnal lizards could be due to difficulty in prey detection due to dim light, reduced or erratic activity of insectprey at night, or shorter activity times of geckos relative to diurnal success. Sex and season were not associated with the incidenceof empty stomachs. Principal component analysis showed that four food alternatives correlated with season. The constraint ofnocturnality, coupled with low night-time temperatures restricting feeding to only a few hours after sunset, appear to have causeda generality of diet which may limit energy acquisition. We conclude that H. darwini is an arthropod generalist and likely an ambushforager, as are many other nocturnal
