Acute kidney injury(AKI)and electrolyte disorders are important complications of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** is thought to occur due to multiple pathophysiological mechanisms,such as multiple organ dysfunction(mainly cardiac and respiratory),direct viral entry in the renal tubules,and cytokine release *** is present in approximately one in every ten hospitalized COVID-19 *** incidence rates of AKI increase in patients who are admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU),with levels higher than 50%.Additionally,renal replacement therapy(RRT)is used in 7%of all AKI cases,but in nearly 20%of patients admitted to an ***-19 patients with AKI are considered moderate-to-severe cases and are managed with multiple interdisciplinary *** acts as a risk factor for mortality in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection,especially when RRT is *** disorders are also common manifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 patients,mainly hyponatremia,hypokalemia,and *** occurs due to a combination of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone and gastrointestinal fluid loss from vomiting and *** it comes to hypokalemia,its mechanism is not fully understood but may derive from hyperaldosteronism due to renin angiotensin aldosterone system overstimulation and gastrointestinal fluid loss as *** clinical features of hypokalemia in COVID-19 are similar to those in other *** is the most common electrolyte disorder in COVID-19 and seems to occur because of vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid *** is also highly associated with longer hospital and ICU stay.

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

Medicinal plants from the Brazilian Amazonian region and their antileishmanial activity:a review

Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by Leishmania protozoans, primarily affects people in tropical and subtropical areas. Chemotherapy based on the use of pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, paromomycin, miltefosine and liposomal amphotericin B is currently the only effective treatment. However, adverse effects, long-term treatment and the emergence of parasite resistance have led to the search for alternative treatments. Natural products used in traditional medicine provide an unlimited source of molecules for the identification of new drugs, and the Amazon region has abundant biodiversity that includes several species of plants and animals, providing a rich source of new products and com- pounds. Although the literature describes numerous promising compounds and extracts for combating Leishmania protozoans, the results of such research have not been embraced by the pharmaceutical industry for the development of new drugs. Therefore, this review focused on the antileishmanial activity of extracts, isolated compounds and essential oils commonly used by the local population in the Brazilian Amazonian region to treat several illnesses and described in the literature as promising compounds for combating leishmaniasis.

In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis angulata root extract on Leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis angulata root （AEPa） on Leishmania infanturn proliferation, morphology, and the driving mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophages. Methods： I., infantum promastigotes were treated with 50 and 100 μg/mL AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastigote assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morphological changes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophages were infected with L. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastigote activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofL infantum promastigotes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg/mL; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastigotes （ICso = 37.9 μg/mL; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastigote numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg/mL）. AEPa induced several morphological changes and increased the production of reactive oxygen species and apoptotic death in promastigotes after treating for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg/mL） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophages infected with L. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophages. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg/mL）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity against the promastigotes and amastigotes of I.. infantum without macrophage cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. angulata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

Characterization of porous cobalt hexacyanoferrate and activated carbon electrodes under dynamic polarization conditions in a sodium-ion pseudocapacitor

We report here the activated carbon and cobalt hexacyanoferrate composite,which is applied as the electrode materials in symmetric supercapacitors containing a 1.0 M Na_(2)SO_(4) aqueous *** novel material combines high specific surface area and electrochemical stability of activated carbon with the redox properties of cobalt hexacyanoferrate,resulting in maximum specific capacitance of 329 F g^(-1) with large voltage working window of 2.0 *** studies indicated that cobalt hexacyanoferrate introduces important pseudocapacitive properties accounting for the overall charge-storage process,especially when I<0.5 A g^(-1).At lower gravimetric currents(e.g.,0.05 A g^(-1))and up to 1.0 V,the presence of cobalt hexacyanoferrate improves the specific energy for more than 300%.In addition,to better understanding the energy storage process we also provided a careful investigation of the electrode materials under dynamic polarization conditions using the in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron light Xray diffraction *** complementary findings were obtained in these *** believe that this novel electrode material is promising for applications regarding the energy-storage process in pseudocapacitors with long lifespan properties.

Drought stress is major abiotic stress that affects soybean ***,it is widely desirable that soybean becomes more tolerant to *** provide insights into regulatory mechanisms of the stress response,we compared the global gene expression profiles from leaves of two soybean genotypes that display different responses to water-deficit(BR 16 and Embrapa 48,drought-sensitive and droughttolerant,respectively).After the RNA-seq analysis,a total of 5335 down-regulated and 3170 up-regulated genes were identified in the *** the other hand,the number of genes differentially expressed was markedly lower in the Embrapa 48,355 up-regulated and 471 down-regulated ***,induction and expression of protein kinases and transcription factors indicated signaling cascades involved in the drought ***,the results suggest that the metabolism of pectin is differently modulated in response to drought stress and may play a role in the soybean defense mechanism against *** occurs via an increase of the cell wall plasticity and crosslink,which contributed to a higher hydraulic conductance(Kf)and relative water content(RWC%).The drought-tolerance mechanism of the Embrapa 48 genotype involves remodeling of the cell wall and increase of the hydraulic conductance to the maintenance of cell turgor and metabolic processes,resulting in the highest leaf RWC,photosynthetic rate(A),transpiration(E)and carboxylation(A/Ci).Thus,we concluded that the cell wall adjustment under drought is important for a more efficient water use which promoted a more active photosynthetic metabolism,maintaining higher plant growth under drought stress.

Aims Soil plays an important role in the formation and heterogene-ity of habitats and thus can cause changes in vegetation struc-ture and plant *** differentiation between Cerrado/savanna and forest is well known,but the relationship between soil and habitats from savannic or forest formations still needs to be better understood,particularly in tropical ecotonal *** studied the association between attributes of plant com-munities,namely structure and diversity,and physicochemical characteristics of soils in the Caatinga domain at the transition to Cerrado in *** Chemical and physical analyses of soils were performed in samples of 38 plots from savannic formations and 30 plots from forest *** was characterized floristically and structurally in all plots,five habitats being assessed in each plant *** features and vegetation parameters were highly distinct among the different *** Findingsin general,forest habitats were more nutrient rich than savannic ***,soil variables showed effects both on vegetation structure and on its species diversity,more pronouncedly in the savannic *** were structurally distinct,and diversity differed between savannic and forest communities;however,a higher differentiation occurred when the savannic formation habitats were compared among *** plant diversity did not differ among forest formation habitats,soil attributes showed a close relationship with edaphic factors and can contribute for similar *** soil-vegetation relationship in highly diverse ecotonal landscapes is important from the conservation biology point of view and aid in the execution of proactive plans for the maintenance of ***,we noticed that diversity and soil behaves distinctly between savannic and forest communities.

Evaluation of limnological dynamics in Nile tilapia farming tank

For fish farming,water is the limiting factor for good *** characteristics determine the health and the productivity of the fish and can indicate possible problems arising in the *** present study aimed to verify the nictemeral and vertical dynamics of limnological characteristics in a tilapia farming tank coated with geomembrane and with low water *** were carried out in a 24 hour on period of 18 days with an interval of three hours between the water *** order to determine the vertical dynamics,water samples were taken at three depths(5,35,and 70 cm)in the central region of the *** was found that the parameters analyzed showed changes in the *** oxygen and pH changed sharply in the 24-hour period(p$<0.05$),with values of 3.86 mg L$^{-1}$at 6:00 AM and 18.39 mg L$^{-1}$at 3:00 PM;and 8.0 at 06:00 AM and 9.65 mg L$^{-1}$at 6:00 PM,*** respect to the three layers of the tank,the difference between the values of dissolved oxygen in the epilimnion and the metalimnion(above 14 mg L$^{-1}$)is clear,while in the hypolimnion the concentration of this oxygen was 7.57 mg L$^{-1}$(p$<0.05$).Nitrite and phosphorus had similar behavior,with more pronounced values in *** is a strong correlation between temperature and depth of the tank($r=-0.85,~p=5.86\times 10^{-9}$),depth and dissolved oxygen($r=-0.77,p=9.97\times 10^{-6}$),temperature and ammonia($r=-0.82,~p=6.33\times 10^{-8}$),depth and ammonia($r=0.79,~p=4.79\times 10^{-7}$),and nitrite and dissolved oxygen($r=-0.72,~p=2.15\times 10^{-4}$).The principal component analysis showed that there was a separation between the strata epilimnion,metalimnion,and *** response surface analysis showed the interaction between depth,temperature and the variables dissolved oxygen,ammonia,and *** result of this study helps to illustrate the dynamics of a tilapia tank covered with geomembrane and low water renewal ove

Protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon region

Background:Studies investigating the nutritional status of patients with leprosy and plantar ulcers are ***,the objective of this study was to describe the protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon ***:A case record form was created for 75 patients with leprosy(31 with plantar ulcers and 44 without plantar ulcers)with the following data:sociodemographic characteristics,clinical form of leprosy,presence or absence of plantar ulcers,and nutritional assessment using anthropometry consisting of the measurement of body mass index,arm circumference,arm muscle circumference,and triceps *** of blood albumin,transferrin,and C-reactive protein(CRP)were also *** regarding protein intake were obtained using a Food Frequency ***:Plantar ulcers occurred more frequently in male patients(67.7%),patients aged 40-49 years(mean±SD:47.3±8.0 years),and patients receiving 300 or 600 USD(71.0%).The mean weight and height of patients were 71.6±11.4 kg and 1.62±0.1 m,*** levels of CRP were detected in 51.6%of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers and only 9.1%of patients without plantar ulcers(P<0.001).Nutritional depletion of transferrin was observed in 14.3%of patients with paucibacillary leprosy and 44.3%of patients with multibacillary leprosy(P=0.0447).Most patients had normal levels of serum albumin(74.2%with plantar ulcers and 77.3%without plantar ulcers).Conclusions:Most leprosy patients with plantar ulcers have normal levels of serum albumin and transferrin and high CRP levels,which indicates the presence of an inflammatory *** findings suggest the need to monitor patients with leprosy to prevent the occurrence of plantar ulcers and to provide adequate treatment for patients with existing plantar ulcers.
