Proton Beam Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma after the Fontan Procedure

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is more likely to occur in patients with a history of Fontan surgery, possibly due to long-term liver congestion. Proton beam therapy (PBT) may be effective for HCC that develops after Fontan surgery. Methods: Six lesions in 5 patients (3 females, 2 males) received PBT. The median age of the patients was 33 (range 21 - 42) years, and the median age at the time of the Fontan procedure was 6 (5 - 13) years. Four patients had multiple HCC at the time of PBT. The median tumor size was 57 (22 - 80) mm and 4 patients were classified as Child-Pugh B. Two patients received transcatheter arterial chemoembolization before PBT. The schedule of PBT was 66 Gy (RBE) in 10 fractions for 2 lesions, 72.6 Gy (RBE) in 22 fractions for 2 lesions, and 74 GyE (RBE) in 37 fractions for 2 lesions. Results: The median follow-up period was 31 (10 - 46) months, and the numbers of survivors, deaths from primary diseases, and deaths from other diseases were 3, 1, and 1, respectively. There were no local recurrences, one intrahepatic metastasis, one lung metastasis, and one intrathoracic metastasis. Conclusion: Although experiences on a small number of patients cannot conclude things, we believe that PBT can be a reasonable choice of radical treatment for HCC occurring after the Fontan procedure.

A regression model-based method for indoor positioning with compound location fingerprints

Improved performance of direct methanol fuel cells with the porous catalyst layer using highly-active nanofiber catalyst

PtRu supported on TiO2-embedded carbon nanofibers(PtRu/TECNF),which was recently reported as a highly-active catalyst for methanol oxidation,was applied to a direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC),and the power generation performance was compared to that using the commercial PtRu/*** the comparison,the effect of the catalyst loading on the power density of the DMFC was investigated using PtRu(18 wt%)/*** DMFC power density showed a maximum at about a 1.5 mg cm2 PtRu loading that corresponds to about an 80 mm layer thickness.A catalyst layer thicker than this value reduced the power density probably due to the concentration *** PtRu content in the PtRu/TECNF was then increased to 30 wt%or more to reduce the layer thickness and to increase the power *** DMFC performance was compared to that of different anode catalysts at a 1 mg cm2 PtRu *** power density was maximized using the PtRu30 wt%/TECNF,which showed a 173 mW cm2 at 353 K and had 66 mm layer thick,that was 26%higher than that of commercial PtRu/*** current–voltage curve of the DMFC with the PtRu/TECNF suggested an improved mass transport overvoltage,but a little improvement in the activation one despite using the catalyst with about a 2 times higher activity compared to that of the commercial PtRu/*** was attributed to the lower Pt utilization of the nanofiber catalyst layer.

Improvement of registration accuracy of a handheld augmented reality system for urban landscape simulation

The need for visual landscape assessment in large-scale projects for the evaluation of the effects of a particular project on the surrounding landscape has grown in recent years. Augmented reality （AR） has been considered for use as a landscape simulation system in which a landscape assessment object created by 3D models is included in the present surroundings. With the use of this system, the time and the cost needed to perform a 3DCG modeling of present surroundings, which is a major issue in virtual reality, are drastically reduced. This research presents the development of a 3D maporiented handheld AR system that achieves geometric consistency using a 3D map to obtain position data instead of GPS, which has tow position information accuracy, particularly in urban areas. The new system also features a gyroscope sensor to obtain posture data and a video camera to capture live video of the present surroundings. All these components are mounted in a smartphone and can be used for urban landscape assessment. Registration accuracy is evaluated to simulate an urban landscape from a short- to a long-range scale. The latter involves a distance of approximately 2000 m. The developed AR system enables users to simulate a Landscape from multiple and longdistance viewpoints simultaneously and to walk around the viewpoint fields using only a smartphone. This result is the tolerance level of Landscape assessment. In conclusion, the proposed method is evaluated as feasible and effective.

Control of Snow Falling Flow around NACA0015 Blade using a Plasma Electrode with Weather Resistant Design

The plasma actuation (PA) effect on the snow falling flow was investigated using a plasma electrode with weather resistant design and the natural snow wind facility of the Hokkaido University of Science. NACA0015 test blade with chord length c of 300 mm was used. Wind tunnel tests were carried out under the angle of the attack of the blade was fixed at 15 degrees, and the main flow velocity is U=5 m/s. PIV (Particle image velocimetry) measurements were conducted on various PA conditions using natural dry snowflakes as a tracer. When the actuator was driven under the condition of the fundamental frequency of F=50 kHz, and the pulsed modulated frequency f of fc/U=1 and Duty ratio (Ratio of plasma ON time to pulse duration time) =1%, movement of snowflakes was controlled the most effectively tested. It was clarified that the fundamental frequency of PA also affects the control of snow flow. Under snowfall conditions, the weather resistant designed plasma electrode has suffered no damage and operated successfully.

Increased utilization and mass activity of PtRu on reduced graphene oxide by heat treatment of its aerogel followed by composite with nanomaterials

The method to increase PtRu utilization and its catalytic activity of PtRu nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide(RGO)by avoiding its restacking was proposed with the aim of developing an active catalyst for a direct methanol fuel *** heat treatment at 200◦C of the GO aerogel(GOA)prepared by freeze drying of GO ice was introduced to weaken the attractive force of the hydrogen bonding between the GO sheets followed by the composite with the nanoparticles,i.e.,ketjenblack(KB),TiO_(2)and Ti_(4)O_(7),at different weight *** catalyst supported on the heat-treated GOA(RGOA),PtRu/RGOA,improved the PtRu utilization to some extent and also increased the ECSA and mass activity compared to that of PtRu/*** had fewer oxygen functional groups,especially the epoxy *** to the treatment and composite,the PtRu utilization was increased from 66.5%for PtRu/RGO to 128.6%for PtRu/RGOA+Ti_(4)O_(7)(4:1)and the mass activity was improved from 50.7 A/g-PtRu for PtRu/RGO to 130.5 A/g-PtRu for PtRu/RGOA+Ti_(4)O_(7)(1:1).The Ti_(4)O_(7)nanoparticles showed the best catalytic performance for the composite suggesting that the strong interaction between Ti_(4)O_(7)and the Pt nanoparticles was effective due to its high electronic conductivity.

Differences in spatial understanding between physical and virtual models

In the digital age, physical models are still used as major tools in architectural and urban design processes. The reason why designers still use physical models remains unclear. In addition, physical and 3D virtual models have yet to be differentiated. The answers to these questions are too complex to account for in all aspects. Thus, this study only focuses on the differences in spatial understanding between physical and virtual models. In particular, it emphasizes on the perception of scale. For our experiment, respondents were shown a physical model and a virtual model consecutively. A questionnaire was then used to ask the respondents to evaluate these models objectively and to establish which model was more accurate in conveying object size. Compared with the virtual model, the physical model tended to enable cluicker and more accurate comDarisons of building heights.
