Treatment Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancer Patients 80 Years Old and over

Background: With the recent aging of society, the need for medical treatment of elderly patients with head and neck cancer seems to have been increasing. Method: The present study analyzed all 103 patients with head and neck cancer ≥80 years, and we compared results with those of the previous generation (Group P;range: 75 - 79 years) comprising 104 patients treated in the same period. Results: We provided treatment just as wanted and could not choose it often. The reasons were oncological factors such as unresectable tumor or distant metastasis, refusal of treatment, and physical factors such as poor PS or number of comorbidities. Conclusion: Treatment choices should be based on the wishes and motivations of the patient and the medical assessment of physical function. When a patient ≥80 years old is treated, the high incidence of complications and severity of the disease should be considered.

Effects of Aerosol Vertical Inhomogeneity on the Upwelling Radiance and Satellite Remote Sensing of Surface Reflectance

There are two widely used radiative models without consideration of aerosol inhomogeneity for satellite remote sensing application, the Homogeneous Model and the Two-layer Model with aerosol in the lower layer. In this paper, effects of the aerosol vertical inhomogeneity on upwelling radiance and satellite remote sensing of surface reflectance are analyzed through numerical simulations by using two models. As shown in the simulations by using 24 representative aerosol models, there is often a considerably large error in upwel-ling radiance calculated by two models (Homogeneous and Two-layer) for the short wavelength channel with strong molecular scattering, owing to the difference between molecular and aerosol scattering proper-ties. For the long wavelength channel, the error is small if aerosol optical parameters are less variable with height, but it could also be significant if there are aerosol layers with different scattering phase functions and single scattering albedo. The radiance errors by the Homogeneous Model and the Two-layer Model can be up to 31.4% and 31.5% for the clean atmosphere, and in case of turbid atmosphere 67.8% and 59.2%, respectively. The radiance error could result in a large uncertainty of surface reflectance retrievals, especially for the short wavelength channel and the strongly absorbing aerosol. For the turbid atmosphere with strong-ly absorbing aerosol, the Homogeneous Model and the Two-layer Model are not suitable for atmospheric correction application. ELASTOMERIC SEISMIC-PROTECTION ISOLATORS FOR BUILDINGS AND BRIDGES

A giant earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred in Pacific Ocean off of Tohoku District Japan on March 11,2011. The highest seismic intensity of 7 in JMA scale was recorded in Miyagi. In the Tohoku district, around 230 buildings are seismically isolated （hereafter, SI） mainly by elastomeric isolators （seismic rubber bearings）. According to the official survey reports by several organizations （for example）, the records of those buildings have verified the effectiveness of the seismic isolation. The response acceleration of the SI buildings was reduced by 30% to 50% of the input ground acceleration. Additionally, the difference of the conditions inside the room between SI and the fixed-base buildings was obvious as well as the damage in main structures of the buildings. The displacements of the isolators by the earthquake were around 200 mm according to the records of the instruments. As a result, the performance of SI buildings and the elastomeric isolators in the Tohoku District -- Off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake 2011 were excellent, and the efficiency of the seismic isolation was verified by the records of many buildings in wide area.

We are developing a Moodle plug-in,which is an AES(automated essay scoring)support system for the basic education of university *** system evaluates essays based on rubric,which has five evaluation viewpoints“Contents,Structure,Evidence,Style,and Skill”.Vocabulary level is one of the scoring items of *** is calculated using Japanese Language Learners’Dictionaries constructed by Sunakawa et *** this does not fully cover the words used in the student-level essays,we found that there is a problem with the accuracy of the vocabulary level *** this paper,we propose to construct comprehensive Japanese vocabulary difficulty level dictionaries using Japanese Wikipedia as the *** apply Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA)to the Wikipedia corpus and find the word appearance probability as one of the indexes of word *** use the TF-IDF value instead of the LDA value of the words,which rarely *** a result,we constructed highly comprehensive Japanese vocabulary difficulty level *** confirmed that the vocabulary level can be scored for all words in the test dataset by using the constructed dictionaries.
