Fermented Black Turmeric Designed by Lactobacillus Rearranged Leukocyte Subsets and Anti-Oxidative Activity

A plant fermentation was carried out by Yeast and Lactobaccilli against fermented black turmeric, Kaempferia parviflora (FBT). These materials were proved by as safe in animal safety experiment. We tried to investigate changes of immune-competent cells that commonly utilized FBT, including after administration of immno-suppressed animals, the effects by FBT on the regulated effect on the cells were evaluated. Our results showed that FBT augmented the level of lymphocytes in number, while FBT regulated the level of granulocytes in both number and function. In our clinical study with 20 healthy volunteers, granulocyte and lymphocyte ratio suggesting their constitution as neutral in peripheral blood were increased significantly 30 days after the administration of FBT in rodents, and compromised host was prepared with cancer chemotherapeutic agent (Mytomycin-C). Our observations showed against intracellular parasite, and that FBT augmented intercellular pathogen through humoral immunity. We discussed the significance and mechanism of FBT on the level of leukocyte subsets in number and function that were considered to be potential indicators for the activation of the compromised host. We also proposed an idea that FBT exhibited tonic effects via activating complement components. The evidences were shown by immune-electrophoretic method. Moreover, we tried to access further to the anti-oxidative activities of this FBT. This modification brought to the significant lift up for antibody producing cells and anti-oxidative activity for phagocytic cells.

Fermented Herbal Decoction Selectively Targeting Human Cancer Cell Line and Human Pathogenic Microorganism

Introduction: Prolonged immuno-suppressed status promised to induce internal growth of malignant cell and infectious agent, yet, only a small part of affected individuals seek medical attention or berried by commercially over-flowed fake information. Several studies have described complementary and alternative medicine as effective strategies for improving anti-infectious agent including malignant cell. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a fermented herbal decoction (FHD) both in vitro and in vivo to malignant cells and microorganism by regulating leukocyte subset proportioning FHD as dietary material. Methods: In this approach of alternative study, selective anti-cancer effect by fermented decoction was tried to show first in vitro system both, cancer cell and virus strain. The fermented herbal decoction consisting of 80 sorts of herbs and fruits. The selective toxicity was set up and then for immunological factors in animal and human. The most important factor is to reduce side effect for a normal cell. Results: First, FHD was proved as safe by animal test. FHD regulated also the proportion of granulocyte and lymphocyte ratio both animal and human. In vitro culture showed selective toxicity by FHD against human melanoma and leukemia cell line but reduced toxicity was showed by normal cell line. As for the anti-virus activity, anti-virus effect was tested on the feeder layer of human fibroblast cell, after 9 days of culture. Second, FHD inhibits colon cancer growth in 3-methylholanthrene induced cancer in rat. Conclusion: The present results suggest that our fermented herbal decoction showed selective anti-cancer activities and anti-virus activities, together with the regulative effect on the immune system.

A Twenty-Year Follow-up Case Study of an Office Worker Who Returned to Work despite Serious Memory Disorder Caused by Herpes Encephalitis

This study followed a 52-year-old male patient, who had suffered from severe impairment in recent memory due to se- quelae of herpes encephalitis, for 20 years. He returned to his highly intellectual work and performed well despite his doctor’s prediction. While the patient showed consistently poor results on various neuropsychological memory tests, he demonstrated incredible performance at work. This case exemplifies an extreme case that declarative memory is formed with the support of semantic memory, procedural memory, and his strong interests. Additionally, it offers lessons that results on memory tests do not necessarily correspond to the actual level of competence. The focal sites were found on both sides of the medial temporal lobe, predominantly on the left side. The T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) obtained 9 years after the onset confirmed widespread damage to the left brain including parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampus, spindle gyrus, and amygdaloid complex, with microlesions extending from the right parahippocampal gyrus to its antero-interior rim. However, the damage to hippocampus was presumed to be minor.

Immunohistochemical Study of Serum Proteins in Normal and Cadmium-Treated Mouse Testis by in vivo Cryotechnique

Objective To investigate time-dependent changes of serum proteins permeability in the normal and cadmium（Cd）-treated mouse testis, reflecting tight junctional （TJ） barriers of Sertoli cells Methods The serum proteins, albumin and immunoglobulin-G（IgG）, in the seminiferous tubules were firstly immobilized by the “in vivo cryotechnique”, in which the dynamic blood circulation was always kept. The cryofixed testicular tissues were then processed for the freeze-substitution method, and embedded in the paraffin wax. Serial sections of 5μm thickness were immunostained by anti-mouse albumin or IgG antibody with peroxidase immunostaining, and also stained with hematoxylin-eosine （HE）for morphological observation. Results In normal seminiferous tubules, albumin immunoreaction products were localized around peritubular myoid cells and among Leydig cells, as well as in blood vessels. They were also localized as arch-like patterns around some spermatogonia in basal compartments. The number of the immunopositive arch structures was different according to developmental stages of the seminiferous cycle, judging from the arrangement of germ cells by HE-staining. The patterns of localization of IgG immunostaining in normal mouse testis were similar to that of albumin. In 24 h after Cd-treatment, some enlarged spaces and vesicular formation in the seminiferous epithelium were observed on the paraffin sections by HE-staining. The albumin or IgGimmunolocalization was seen not only in the basal compartments, but also in the adluminal compartments between *** and germ cells. Conclusion The structural changes of inter-Sertoli TJ barriers in vivo, such as different immunostaining patterns of serum proteins between the normal and Cd-treated mouse seminiferous tubules, could be clearly detected by the “in vivo cryotechnique” with albumin or IgG immunohistochemistry.

Phase Diagram of an S= 1/2 J1-J2Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on a Triangular Lattice

We study the ground state of an S=1/2 anisotropic a (≡Jz/Jxy) Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbor exchange interactions on a triangular lattice using the exact diagonalization method. We obtain the energy, squared sublattice magnetizations, and their Binder ratios on finite lattices with N≤36 sites. We estimate the threshold J(t) 2 (a)?between the three-sublattice Néel state and the spin liquid (SL) state, and J(s) 2 (a)? between the stripe state and the SL state. The SL state exists over a wide range in the α-J2 plane. For α>1 , the xy component of the magnetization is destroyed by quantum fluctuations, and the classical distorted 120°structure is replaced by the collinear state.

AIM: To investigate the expressions of omithine decarboxylase (ODC), MMP-2, and Erk, and their relationship in human colon ***: ODC activity, MMP-2 expression, and mitogenactivated protein (MAP) kinase activity (Erk phosphorylation) were determined in 58 surgically removed human colon tumors and their adjacent normal tissues, using [1-14C]-ornithine as a substrate, ELISA assay, and Western blotting, ***: ODC activity, MMP-2 expression, and Erk phosphorylation were significantly elevated in colon tumors, compared to those in adjacent normal tissues. A significant correlation was observed between ODC activities and MMP-2 ***: This is the first report showing a significant correlation between ODC activities and MMP-2 levels in human colon tumors. As MMP-2 is involved in cancer invasion and metastasis, and colon cancer overexpresses ODC, suppression of ODC expression may be a rational approach to treat colon cancer which overexpresses ODC.

Efficacy and safety of telaprevir- and simeprevir-based triple therapies for older patients with chronic hepatitis C

AIM To evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of telaprevir(TVR)-and simeprevir(SMV)-based triple therapies in elderly patients, specifically patients aged 66 years or *** The present study enrolled 112 and 76 Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1b infection who were treated with a 12-wk TVR-based or SMV-based triple therapy, respectively, followed by a dual therapy that included pegylated interferon α and ribavirin(RBV) for 12 wk. The patients were categorized into two groups according to age as follows: A younger group of patients aged ≤ 65 years old and an older group of patients aged > 65 years old. Among the patients treated with TVR-based triple therapy, 34 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 56 years(range: 28-65 years) in the younger group and 69 years(range: 66-81 years) in the older group. Among the patients treated with SMV-based triple therapy, 39 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 59 years(range: 36-65 years) in the younger group and 71 years(range: 66-86 years) in the older group. The clinical, biochemical and virological data were analyzed before and during *** Among the patients treated with the TVR-based triple therapy, no significant difference in the sustained virological response(SVR) was found between the younger(80.8%) and older(88.2%) groups. The SVR rates for patients with the interleukin 28B(IL28B)(rs8099917) TG/GGgenotypes(73.9% and 60.0% in the younger and older groups, respectively) were significantly lower than for patients with the IL28B TT-genotype(86.3% and 92.9%, respectively). The cumulative exposure to RBV for the entire 24-wk treatment period(as a percentage of the target dose) was significantly higher in the younger group than in the older group(91.7% vs 66.7%, respectively, P < 0.01), but the cumulative exposure to TVR was not significantly different between the younger and older groups(91.6% vs 81.9%, respectively). We investigated the growth of crystalline ZrO2 film prepared on p-Si（100） by limited reaction sputtering system under different growth temperatures from 400 to 700oC. The structural characteristics of the samples were studied by XRD, RHEED and AFM, which provided a solid identification of the phase transformation from monoclinic phase to tetragonal phase. The dielectric properties were studied by C-V and I-V measurements on Au/ZrO2/p-Si（100） MIS structures, suggesting that the tetragonal ZrO2 thin film shows excellent dielectric performances including a high permittivity up to 32 as well as a negligible flatband voltage shift in C-V curves.

＜正＞ The critical factor in the construction of U-shaped steel girder bridges, generally called open-box girder bridges, is the load capacity of the structural system under installation before the hardening of the concrete floor slabs. Therefore, it is important to measure the load capacity performance of the U-shaped sections. However, there have been no experimental studies on the load capacity performance of U-shaped sections. This experimental study revealed the shear load capacity characteristics of U-shaped sections.
