Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. 提升TC11钛合金的耐磨损性能对航空发动机关键零部件的安全性能至关重要。基于表面机械研磨处理工艺,通过将研磨球和TiN粉末混合研磨的方式,在TC11钛合金表面实现了晶粒细化和弥散强化,成功制备了基于TiN颗粒增强的强化层,对表面形貌和微观组织特征进行研究,并评估其耐磨损性能。结果表明,处理后的TC11钛合金样品表面粗糙度显著降低,表面硬度和耐磨损性能显著提升。与未处理和仅作普通研磨处理的样品相比,TiN颗粒增强的样品表面粗糙度分别降低了43.29%和23.14%,表面硬度分别提高了9.48%和1.8%,磨痕宽度分别降低了36.18%和33.18%。本文为改善TC11及其他钛合金材料的耐磨损性能提供了一种新的解决方法,对提高航空发动机关键零部件的服役性能具有参考意义。

Development of high damage threshold laser-machined apodizers and gain filters for laser applications

We have developed high damage threshold filters to modify the spatial profile of a high energy laser beam. The filters are formed by laser ablation of a transmissive window. The ablation sites constitute scattering centers which can be filtered in a subsequent spatial filter. By creating the filters in dielectric materials, we see an increased laser-induced damage threshold from previous filters created using ‘metal on glass' lithography.

It is widely recognized that climate change is one of the greatest challenges humanity faces in the 21st century[1,2].As the leading authority for the assessment of climate change,the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),in its special report on global warming of 1.5℃,has concluded that human activities have caused approximately 1.0℃ of global warming above preindustrial levels,with a likely increase of 1.5℃ between 2030 and 2052[3].Climate-related risks for natural and human systems are projected to increase with global warming of 1.5℃,and increase further with 2℃ or *** risks depend on the magnitude and rate of warming,geographic location,levels of development and vulnerability,and on the choices and implementation of adaptation and mitigation options.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the 2019 School-Based Awareness Campaign on Road Driving in the Municipalities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi in Benin

Being the leading death cause among young people in the world, road accidents are avoidable through the adoption of simple attitudes and behaviors. Handicap International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has launched an awareness campaign in secondary schools in the municipalities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavito bring young Beninese users to adopt good attitudes and safe behavior while driving on the road. This study aims at assessing the effectiveness of this awareness campaign. It was an evaluative cross-sectional here-elsewhere type study, held in fourteen high schools in the cities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi, of which seven benefited from the campaign and seven did not. In each school, students were selected on the basis of two-stage random sampling. 656 students, 309 of whom were sensitized and 347 of whom were not, were included in this study. The campaign was quite effective. Students, teachers, and school officials’ perceptions of the campaign were positive. In addition, the sensitized students had a better level of kno.ledge (p = 0.001) and reported safer behaviors (p = 0.003) while driving on the road than those who were not aware. Although the effects are positive, they are still very small. Efforts must be continued and much remains to be done.

Effects of la^(3+) and Gd^(3+) on Ca^(2+) influx in rat hepatoma H-35 cells

Effects of la93+) and Gd3+ on Ca2+ influx were investigated in rat hepatoma H-35 cells by measuring the initial rate of45Ca2+ uptake. It was found that the maximum initial rate of Ca2+ uptake was increased six- to ten-fold at low concentrations of la3+ and Gd3+. Kinetic analyses by measuring the initial rate of Ca2+ influx at different external Ca2+ concentrations indicated the existence of two intracellular exchangeable components in the basal Ca2+ system, with low and high affinities for Ca2+,and only one class of Ca2+ binding sites was observed in the la3+- or Gd3+-treated cells. For high affinity, la3+ and Gd3+ increased both kinetic parameters Km and V(max of basal Ca2+ influx. la3+ and Gd3+ compete directly with Ca2+ for Ca2+ binding site for low affinity. The kinetics is competitive.

Global changes explain the long-term demographic trend of the Eurasian common lizard (Squamata: lacertidae)

The demographic trend of a species depends on the dynamics of its local populations,which can be compromised by local or by global ***,the relevance of local and global phenomena has rarely been investigated ***,we tested whether local phenomena compromised a species'demographic trend using the Eurasian common lizard Zootoca vivipara,the terrestrial reptile exhibiting the widest geographic distribution,as a model *** analyzed the species'ancient demographic trend using genetic data from its 6 allopatric genetic clades and tested whether its demographic trend mainly depended on single clades or on global *** vivipara's effective population size increased since 2.3 million years ago and started to increase steeply and continuously from 0.531 million years *** growth rate exhibited 2 maxima,both occurring during global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern *** population size and growth rate were negatively correlated with global surface temperatures,in line with global parameters driving long-term demographic *** vivipara's ancient demography was neither driven by a single clade,nor by the 2 clades that colonized huge geographic areas after the last *** low importance of local phenomena,suggests that the experimentally demonstrated high sensitivity of this species to short-term ecological changes is a response in order to cope with short-term and local *** suggests that what affected its long-term demographic trend the most,were not these local changes/responses,but rather the important and prolonged global climatic changes and important vegetation changes on the northern hemisphere,including the opening up of the forest by humans.
