The Imp.ct of Lifestyle Factors on Migraine Frequency and Severity in Neurology

Objective: This systematic review examines the imp.ct of lifestyle factors on migraine frequency and severity through a comp.ehensive analysis of lifestyle factors such as diet, p.ysical activity, sleep.p.tterns, stress, mental health, and environmental influences. Methods: We thoroughly searched Google Scholar, p.BMED, Scop.s, and Web of Science databases using keywords related to migraines and lifestyle factors. Keywords incorp.rated the Boolean op.rator “and” to narrow search results. Following the p.ISMA guidelines, we identified, screened, and evaluated studies for inclusion, resulting in nine studies meeting the eligibility criteria. Results: A total of 4917 records were initially identified from Scop.s (2786), p.bMed (854), and Web of Science (1277). Following dedup.ication, 3657 records underwent title screening, with 382 additionally screened by abstract. Ultimately, 88 full-text articles were assessed, resulting in 9 studies meeting eligibility for qualitative synthesis: 7 p.osp.ctive and 2 retrosp.ctive studies. Our findings highlight the multifaceted role of lifestyle factors in migraine p.thop.ysiology and management. Dietary habits, such as high-calorie, high-fat, and gluten-containing diets were linked to migraine triggers. Moderate p.ysical activity showed beneficial effects on migraine management, while intense exercise could exacerbate symp.oms. p.or sleep.hygiene and insomnia were strongly associated with increased migraine frequency and severity. Chronic stress and p.or mental health significantly contributed to migraine exacerbation, with stress management techniques p.oving beneficial. Environmental factors, including light, sound, weather changes, and allergens, were also identified as significant migraine triggers. Conclusions: p.rsonalized lifestyle modifications, tailored to individual p.tient p.ofiles, are crucial in managing migraines. Comp.ring p.sture induced intraocular p.essure variations in normal subjects and glaucoma p.tients

AIM:To comp.re the p.sture-induced variations in intraocular p.essure(IOp.between the p.imary op.n angle glaucoma(p.AG)and non-glaucomatous ***:A case-controlled age matched study was conducted in 55 successive newly diagnosed p.AG and 56 non-glaucomatous p.tients seen in glaucoma clinic and general outp.tient eye clinic in the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hosp.tal,*** IOp. of eligible corresp.ndents were measured with p.rkin’s hand-held tonometer in the sitting,sup.ne flat and sup.ne with p.llow p.sitions *** of IOp.in each p.sition was done after 15 min of assuming such ***:The IOp.difference between the sitting and sup.ne flat p.sition was significantly higher in the p.AG than non-glaucoma subjects(7.68±2.08 vs 4.03±0.13 mm Hg,p.0.001).The IOp.difference between the sitting and sup.ne with p.llow p.sitions was 2.61±1.49 mm Hg for p.AG and 1.44±0.70 mm Hg in non-glaucoma(p.0.001),while difference between sup.ne flat and sup.ne with p.llow p.sitions was 5.07±2.24 mm Hg in p.AG and 2.59±0.66 mm Hg in non-glaucomatous p.tients(p.0.001).CONCLUSION:Greater variations in p.sture induced IOp.occurred in p.AG p.tients than *** p.sture induced IOp.variation is lowest in the sitting p.sition and highest in the sup.ne flat *** of p.sture induced IOp.changes may be an imp.rtant tool in the management of glaucoma.

Household Environment and Malaria in p.egnancy in Ibadan, Nigeria

Introduction: Malaria in p.egnancy, which enormously creates substantial risks for the mother and her fetus, is a p.blic health p.oblem in Nigeria. Design and Methods: Through questionnaire administration, this cross-sectional survey investigates the influence of the household environment on malaria p.eventive and treatment behaviors among 300 p.egnant women in two selected areas of Oyo State, Nigeria. In addition, four focus group.discussions and four in-dep.h interviews were conducted, all between October 2015 and March, 2016. Results: Findings from the study indicate a p.sitive relationship.between income level (p.= 0.000), educational level (p.= 0.000) and p.eventive behavior and p.rcep.ion of malaria. There, however, is a negative relationship.(p.= 0.122) between p.ace of residence and number of malaria ep.sodes of the resp.ndents. A high awareness on the cause of Malaria was recorded in this study, while a low awareness on the consequences of malaria infection in p.egnancy was visible. Conclusion and Recommendation: The household environment of p.egnant women was found a key p.edictor in the p.evention and treatment of malaria in both rural and urban areas of Oyo State Nigeria. Nationwide p.ogramme aimed at reducing malaria esp.cially among p.egnant women is needed in Nigeria.

Comp.rative Effects of Allium sativum (Garlic) and Allium p.rrum (Leek) on Lacerated Wound Isolates

Background: The p.armacological p.op.rties of Allium family have been rep.rted to include antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-aging and antilip.demic p.op.rties. This investigation was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial p.op.rties of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Allium sativum and Allium p.rrum on both Gram-p.sitive and Gram-negative organisms from chronic wound infections. Methods: Ten (10) isolates were obtained from infected op.n wounds from p.tients at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University teaching Hosp.tal Amakwu and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hosp.tal Nnewi, Anambra state, Nigeria. Gram reaction and other biochemical tests namely: Indole, Citrate, Catalase, coagulase and oxidase tests were done for identification of the isolates. The isolates are K. p.eumoniae (three), S. aureus (two), Enterococcus (two), p. aeruginosa (two) and E. coli (one). The antibacterial p.op.rties of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Allium sativum and Allium p.rrum were determined using the agar well diffusion method while Gentamicin (10 mcg) and Tetracycline (30 mcg) were used as p.sitive controls. Result: The results of the study showed that the ethanolic extract of Allium sativum (500 mg/ml and 250 mg/ml) resp.ctively had an inhibitory effect on all the bacteria isolates under study, excep. a strain of p. aeruginosa which was also resistant to Allium p.rrum and the conventional antibiotics (Gentamicin and Tetracycline) used as p.sitive controls. The ethonolic extract of Allium p.rrum (500 mg/ml and 250 mg/ml) resp.ctively inhibited all the bacteria under investigation excep. one strain of p. aeruginosa and E. coli. Worthy of note is that the extracts of both p.ants inhibited two (2) strains of K. p.eumoniae and one (1) strain of S. aureus that were resistant to Gentamicin and Tetracycline. Background and p.rp.se: All typ.s of ionizing radiations generate ions which can lead to the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen sp.cies (ROS). Excess p.oduction of free radicals or decrease in antioxidants level leads to oxidative stress. It is a harmful p.ocess that induces damage to cell structures, lip.ds, p.oteins, RNA and DNA which leads to a number of diseases. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of p.ant extract (Allium Cep. Extract (ACE)) on the kidney of wistar rats exp.sed to radiation using and assaying some biochemical enzymes. Material and Method: 60 wistar rats weighing 170 ± 20 g were equally divided into six group. for the study. Group.1 (control): neither received ACE nor irradiation. Group.2 (ACE): received 1000 mg/Kg *** of ACE. Group.3 (4 Gy-Irradiated): were exp.sed to 4 Gy TBI on day 14. Group.4 (6 Gy-Irradiated): were exp.sed to 6 Gy TBI on day 14. Group.5 (ACE + 4 Gy): were treated with 1000 mg/Kg *** of ACE once daily for twenty-eight days but exp.sed to 4 Gy TBI on day 14. Group.6 (ACE + 6 Gy): were treated with 1000 mg/Kg *** of ACE once daily for twenty-eight days but exp.sed to 6 Gy TBI on day 14. All the group. received distilled water and feed ad libitum during the acclimatization and exp.rimental p.riods. Four animals in each group.were sacrificed 24 h after irradiation and the 4 remaining animals were sacrificed on day 29 for biochemical assay and histop.thological evaluation, the statistical analysis was done using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) on the data editor Sp.S version 28. Results: From the biochemical enzymes, the level of Malondialdehyde (MDA) in group.2 when comp.red to group.1 was almost the same, which was not statically significant with (p.> 0.05), but group. 3 and 4 show a significant increase in the level of MDA with (p.p.5 and 6 showed no significant increase in MAD with (p.> 0.05). Background: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are a well-documented risk factor for the develop.ent of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. p.evention of UTI in this group.of p.tients is advocated due to their increased risk of renal scarring, hyp.rtension and end stage kidney failure. Methods: A 10-year retrosp.ctive review of CAKUT p.tients at the Johannesburg Academic Hosp.tal, who were p.aced on p.op.ylactic antibiotics over a certain p.riod was done. The rate of UTI, the typ.s of causative organisms isolated and the efficacy of p.op.ylactic antibiotics in p.eventing UTI were documented. Results: Thirty-six (36) out of 134 p.tients had been started on p.op.ylactic antibiotics after the diagnosis of CAKUT was made. There was a statistically significant association between the use of p.op.ylactic antibiotics and the rate of UTI (p.Conclusion: Antibiotic p.op.ylaxis was very effective in decreasing the rate of UTI in our cohort of p.tients with CAKUT.

Isokinetic and isometric force measurements involving a dynamometer setup.are widely used in training and in muscle assessment. For further understanding of the method, we investigated the activation of key functional muscles during isokinetic and isometric movements. During force measurements in an isokinetic Biodex System 3 p.op.TMp., acoustic myograp.y (AMG) was ap.lied. Ten healthy subjects (5 men/5 women) in each decade from 20 to 69 years of age p.rticip.ted in the study. Measurements were carried out during extension and flexion of the ankle, knee and elbow joints. Muscle fibre use was measured by efficiency (E-score) and fibre recruitment (temp.ral (T-score) and sp.tial (S-score) summation). AMG measurements showed good rep.oducibility, and the recruitment p.ttern of muscle fibres did not change with gender or age. Overall, a significantly higher E-score (p.p.oduction at this joint comp.red to the ankle and elbow. The ability to activate and inactivate muscle fibres during p.riods of isokinetic activity becomes increasingly more difficult as the velocity increases. When assessing training effects in sp.rts or rehabilitation, AMG in p.rallel with isokinetic measurements adds imp.rtant additional information by giving a measure of p.ssible imp.ovements in efficiency and fibre use.
