Objective:To explore the hepatoprotective and anti-oxidant activities of the methanolic leaf extract of Bridelia micrantha(***) on paracetamol induced liver damage in Wistar rats. methods:Parameters were measured including alanine aminotransaminase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),bilirubin and total *** anti-oxidant effects were studied using the 1,l-Diphenynl-2-Picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power(FRAP) assay ***:*** extract decreased the level of AST in the rats given PCm from(129.47±0.921) IU/L to(57.78±1.71) IU/L(Pmarin which was(59.92±1.41) IU/*** concentration was reduced from (150.18±2.23) IU/L to(79.10±2.01) IU/L(Pm(49.86±0.85) IU/L to(29.64±1.53) IU/L(Pm(2.14±0.10 mg/dL) to(0.18±0.07) mg/dL (Pm(4.26±0.30) mg/dL to(6.20±0.19) mg/dL(Pm 10 - 400μg/mL of *** were assayed for antioxidant *** DPPH assay showed 98%antioxidant activity at concentration of 400μg/mL. The FRAP values were 0.016,0.39,0.455,0.601 and 1.382μm at 10.50,100,200 and 400μg/ mL ***:Results suggest that *** has hepatoprotective and anti oxidant ***,further work involving fractionation needs to done to isolate the active compound responsible for the hepatoprotective activity.

The study assessed the anthropometric indices and health status of adult women,aged 30-60 years in relation to their food consumption *** blood sugar level,blood pressure and body mass index of the respondents were determined.A cross sectional survey was used for this study,a clustered and simple random sampling selection technique was used in selecting the *** indices of weight and height were used to assess the body mass index(BmI),while waist hip ratio(WHR)was used to check for abdominal *** were considered overweight using world health organization standard(BmI at or above 25),or WHR above *** status was assessed by checking blood pressure and blood sugar *** pressure was taken twice using Omron sphygmomanometer with appropriate cuff off size and women were classified hypertensive if having a mean blood pressure above 120/80 *** glucometer was used to check for random blood sugar(RBS)levels,respondents were considered diabetics if they have a random sugar above 140 mg/*** frequency table was used to assess food consumption *** were said to have low consumption if consumed the food 1-3 times per week or if rarely or never *** is moderate if consumed 4-6 times per week and high,if consumed 7 times per week,or *** covered relevant data such as personal data,demographic *** showed that the women mean standard deviations for body mass index(BmI),waist hip ratio(WHR),random blood sugar(RBS),systolic blood pressure(SBP)and diastolic blood pressure(DBP)were 26.29±4.1,0.86±0.34,112.51±23.0,115.4±23.0 and 88.45±4.3 *** mean value for BmI was on the overweight *** correlation analysis showed that SBP,DBP,RBS and WHR had positive correlation with BmI with confidence level set at 0.05%(0.206,p=0.005;0.16,p=0.031;0.081,p=0.0021 and 0.148,p=0.000 respectively).WHR also had stronger correlation with RBS(0.90,p=0.278),systolic(0.272,p=0.002)

The study assessed the nutrients,anti-nutrients and phytochemical properties of noni concentrate,pulp,and *** plant is a small evergreen tree,used for both medicinal purposes and for *** kilograms(6 kg)of matured,ripe noni fruit(morinda citrifolia),was harvested by hand picking,from Green Health Farm,Imo State,*** was divided into three equal parts,for the purposes of sample preparation and *** pulp:One portion of the noni fruit sample was cleaned,washed and drained to remove debris and thereafter,was spread on a clean tray and allowed to air dry,at room *** practice encouraged further ripening and softening of the *** seeds were then removed and the fruit crushed,to extract the *** pulp was packaged in an air tight container and kept in the fridge for further *** concentrate:The second portion of the noni fruit samples was cleaned,washed and allowed to air dry on a raised table,under room *** the aid of a juice collection box,the juice was extracted and stored in a clean dry container for further *** seed:The third portion of the noni fruit samples was cleaned,washed,to remove debris and thereafter,was crushed by hand to select the *** seeds were separated from the pulp by a strong spray of water,and then washed to further remove pulp on the *** seeds were dried for 2 days in open air and further oven dried and then grounded to a fine powder and packaged for *** results of the proximate composition of noni seed,pulp and concentrate showed significant difference(pm 0.02%to 4.53%.The seed had the highest protein content(4.53%).There was significant difference(pmoisture content of the seed,pulp and *** moisture content of the seed(8.27%)was lower than that of pulp(92.55%)and concentrate(88.38%).The crude fiber contents of the seed,pulp and concentrat

Background: Overweight and obesity present a growing health problem among Africans from all socioeconomic status. In Sub Saharan African, obesity is not only a consequence of overnutrition but possibly from excessive consumption of unbalanced diet dominated by carbohydrates and saturated fats. Characteristics of the distribution of obesity/overweight in Nigeria include its high prevalence along with socioeconomic class and in mid-life. methods: Using the WHO STEP-wise approach to surveillance of noncommunicable diseases, we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of the adult population living in two urban slums in Enugu. The study was carried out in 2013. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version. Results: A total of 605 (414 women (68.4%) and 191 (31.6%) men were recruited and analysed. The mean body mass index was 25.8 kg/m2 higher in females (26.7 kg/m2) than males (24 kg/m2) p is 29.4% (178/605) and 19.5% (118/605) respectively. There also a modest prevalence of underweight 4% (24/605) among the population. All classes of obesity were significantly more prevalent in females. Significant positive correlates of BmI were: female sex (r = 0.21, p ms in Enugu and co-exists with a modest rate of underweight. Public health and community-based approaches should be used to tackle these two-opposing social/health problems.
