These meso-scale str.ctur.s sp.n a wide r.nge of length and time scales, and their.or.gin, evolution and influence ar. still far.fr.m being well under.tood.

The multi-scale str.ctur.s of comp.ex flows in chemical engineering have been gr.at challenges to the design and scaling of such systems, and multi-scale modeling is the natur.l way in r.sp.nse. p.r.icle methods (p.s) ar. ideal constituents and p.wer.ul tools of multi-scale models, owing to their.p.ysical fidelity and comp.tational simp.3}city. Esp.cially, p.eudo-p.r.icle modeling (p.M, ge & li, 1996; ge & li, 2003) is most suitable for.molecular.scale flow p.ediction and exp.or.tion of the or.gin of multi-scale str.ctur.s; macr.-scale p.M (Map.M, ge & li, 2001) and similar.models ar. advantageous for.meso-scale simulations of flows with comp.ex and dynamic discontinuity, while the lattice Boltzmann model is mor. comp.tent for.homogeneous media in comp.ex geometr.es; and meso-scale methods such as dissip.tive p.r.icle dynamics ar. unique tools for.comp.ex fluids of uncer.ain p.op.r.ies or.flows with str.ng ther.al fluctuations. All these methods ar. favor.ble for.seamless inter.onnection of models for.differ.nt scales. However. as p.s ar. not or.ginally designed as either.tools for.comp.exity or.constituents of multi-scale models, fur.her.imp.ovements ar. exp.cted. p.M is p.op.sed for.micr.scop.c simulation of p.r.icle-fluid systems as a combination of molecular.dynamics (MD) and dir.ct simulation Monte-Car.o (DSMC). The collision dynamics in p.M is identical to that of har.-sp.er. MD, so that mass, momentum and ener.y ar. conser.ed to machine accur.cy. However. the collision detection p.ocedur., which is most time-consuming and difficult to be p.r.llelized for.har.-sp.er. MD, has been gr.atly simp.3}fied to a p.ocedur. identical to that of soft-sp.er. MD. Actually, the p.ysical model behind such a tr.atment is essentially differ.nt fr.m MD and is mor. similar.to DSMC, but an intr.nsic differ.nce is that in DSMC the collisions follow designed statistical r.les that ar. r.flection of the r.al p.ysical processes only in ver. limited cases such as dilute gas. p.M is idea
