Dynamic Scaling of the Generalized Complementary Relationship Improves Long-term Tendency Estimates in Land Evaporation

Most large-scale evapotranspiration(ET)estimation methods require detailed information of land use,land cover,and/or soil type on top of various atmospheric measurements.The complementary relationship of evaporation(CR)takes advantage of the inherent dynamic feedback mechanisms found in the soil−vegetation−atmosphere interface for its estimation of ET rates without the need of such biogeophysical data.ET estimates over the conterminous United States by a new,globally calibrated,static scaling(GCR-stat)of the generalized complementary relationship(GCR)of evaporation were compared to similar estimates of an existing,calibration-free version(GCR-dyn)of the GCR that employs a temporally varying dynamic scaling.Simplified annual water balances of 327 medium and 18 large watersheds served as ground-truth ET values.With long-term monthly mean forcing,GCR-stat(also utilizing precipitation measurements)outperforms GCR-dyn as the latter cannot fully take advantage of its dynamic scaling with such data of reduced temporal variability.However,in a continuous monthly simulation,GCR-dyn is on a par with GCR-stat,and especially excels in reproducing long-term tendencies in annual catchment ET rates even though it does not require precipitation information.The same GCR-dyn estimates were also compared to similar estimates of eight other popular ET products and they generally outperform all of them.For this reason,a dynamic scaling of the GCR is recommended over a static one for modeling long-term behavior of terrestrial ET.

Stress Path Analysis of Deep-Sea Sediments Under the Compression-Shear Coupling Load of Crawler Collectors

The mechanical properties of deep-sea sediments during the driving process of crawler collectors are essential factors in the design of mining systems.In this study,a crawler load is divided into a normal compression load and a horizontal shear load.Then,the internal stress state of sedimentary soil is examined through a theoretical calculation and finite element numerical simulation.Finally,the driving of crawlers is simulated by changing the relative spatial position between the load and stress unit,obtaining the stress path of the soil unit.Based on the calculation results,the effect of the horizontal shear load on the soil stress response is analyzed at different depths,and the spatial variation law of the soil stress path is examined.The results demonstrate that the horizontal shear load has a significant effect on the rotation of the principal stress,and the reverse rotation of the principal stress axis becomes obvious with the increase in the burial depth.The stress path curve of the soil is different at various depths.The spatial variation rule of the stress path of the shallow soil is complex,whereas the stress path curve of the deep soil tends to shrink as the depth increases.The stress path of the corresponding depth should be selected according to the actual research purpose and applied to the laboratory test.

Dynamic threshold for SPWVD parameter estimation based on Otsu algorithm

Time-frequency-based methods are proven to be effective for parameter estimation of linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals.The smoothed pseudo Winger-Ville distribution (SPWVD) is used for the parameter estimation of multi-LFM signals,and a method of the SPWVD binarization by a dynamic threshold based on the Otsu algorithm is proposed.The proposed method is effective in the demand for the estimation of different parameters and the unknown signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) circumstance.The performance of this method is confirmed by numerical simulation.

Soy protein isolate(SPI)is a commercial protein with balanced amino acids,while the poor solubility impedes its use in traditional foods.To overcome the problem,the complex coacervation of SPI/Flammulina velutipes polysaccharide(FVP)were investigated.Initial results revealed that the suitable amounts of FVP contributed to reducing the turbidity of SPI solution.Under electrostatic interaction,the formation of SPI/FVP coacervates were spontaneous and went through a nucleation and growth process.Low salt concentration(C_(NaCl)=10,50 mmol/L)led to an increase in the critical pH values(pHc,pHφ1)while the critical pH values decreased when C_(NaCl)≥100 mmol/L.The concentration of NaCl ions increased the content ofα-helix.With the increase of FVP,the critical pH values decreased and the content ofβ-sheet increased through electrostatic interaction.At SPI/FVP ratio of 10:1 and 15:1,the complex coacervation of SPI/FVP were saturated,and the coacervates had the same storage modulus value.SPI/FVP coacervates exhibited solid-like properties and presented the strongest storage modulus at C_(NaCl)=50 mmol/L.The optimal pH,SPI/FVP ratio and NaCl concentration of complex coacervation were collected,and the coacervates demonstrated a valuable application potential to protect and deliver bioactives and food ingredients.

Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate alleviated diarrhea and colitis via Lactobacillus johnsonii biofilm-mediated maturation of sulfomucin

maintainance of sulfomucin is a key end point in the treatment of diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).However,the mechanisms underlying the microbial sense to sulfomucin are poorly understood,and to date,there are no therapies targeting the secretion and maturation of sulfomucin in IBD.Herein,we biosynthesized poly-β-hydroxybutyrate(PHB)and found that PHB could alleviate inflammation caused by diarrhea and colitis by enhancing the differentiation of sulfomucin.Microbiota transplantation and clearance together demonstrate that PHB promoting sulfomucin is mediated by Lactobacillus johnsonii(L.johnsonii).Further studies revealed that PHB provides a favorable niche for L.johnsonii biofilm formation to resist disturbance and support its growth.L.johnsonii-biofilm alleviates colitis by regulating fucose residues to promote goblet cell differentiation and subsequent sulfomucin maturation.Importantly,PHB alleviates colitis by enhancing sulfomucin secretion and maturation in a L.johnsonii-dependent manner.PHB represents a class of guardians,acting as a safe probiotic-biofilm delivery system that significantly promotes probiotic proliferation.Altogether,this study adds weight to the possible role of probiotics and functional materials in the treatment of intestinal inflammation.The application of PHB and biofilm self-coating L.johnsonii carries high translational potential and may be of clinical relevance.

The effect of public health awareness and behaviors on the transmission dynamics of syphilis in Northwest China, 2006-2018, based on a multiple-stages mathematical model

Syphilis,a sexually transmitted infectious disease caused by the bacterium treponema pallidum,has re-emerged as a global public health issue with an estimated 12 million people infected each year.Understanding the impacts of health awareness and behaviors on transmission dynamics of syphilis can help to establish optimal control strategy in different regions.In this paper,we develop a multiple-stage SIRS epidemic model taking into account the public health awareness and behaviors of syphilis.First,the basic reproduction number R_(0) is obtained,which determines the global dynamics behaviors of the model.We derive the necessary conditions for implementing optimal control and the corresponding optimal solution for mitigation syphilis by using Pontryagin's maximum Principle.Based on the data of syphilis in ningxia from 2006 to 2018,the parameterizations and model calibration are carried out.The fitting results are in good agreement with the data.Moreover,sensitivity analysis shows that the public awareness induced protective behaviors C_(e),compliance of condom-induced preventabilityεand treatment for the primary syphilis m1 play an important role in mitigating the risk of syphilis outbreaks.These results can help us gain insights into the epidemiology of syphilis and provide guidance for the public health authorities to implement health education programs.

Given the indication of the IMO’s intent to the application of the EEDI and EEOI,the complete and precise total resistance of a ship and induced speed loss in wind and wave is primarily required.This paper proposed a practicable method to evaluate the total resistance in seaway.Besides the still water resistance,the added resistance due to waves is computed using panel method and the wind resistance is obtained using CFD with the verification of an open wind test and statistical formula.The speed loss is acquired in consideration of the matching of the hull,engine and propeller.A hull optimization method is consequently presented based on the proper resistance evaluation approach.The approach is validated available and the total resistance of a ship could be reduced after hull optimization.©2016 Shanghai Jiaotong University.Published by Elsevier B.V.

Test the effectiveness of building safety guidance signs in a T-junction corridor based on eye movement data

Evacuation signs are a key factor in the effectiveness of occupants'urgent escape from buildings.Different sign features may have disparate impacts on individual and crowd behavior.This study aims to quantitatively inves-tigate the effectiveness of building evacuation signs with different features during pedestrian evacuation using eye-tracking devices.Ten experiments were conducted in a building in T-junction scenarios,and four sets of features related to evacuation signs(color,position,graphics,and flashing)were considered.SMI BeGaze was used to analyze the eye movements of the occupants.The fixation duration of the evacuees and the ratio of signs detected and followed were quantitatively derived and compared for each experiment.The results show that it is easier for evacuees to detect signs at a low sightline,and signs posted at that level of sight can provide better guidance.When signs are posted high up,red signs are easier to detect than green signs.Most evacuees prefer to follow the evacuation signs once they detect them;however,there is no significant difference in the effect of what is posted on the evacuation signs,such as a runNing Man or an arrow.Conversely,flashing of signs is highly helpful in influencing evacuees'behavior,but flashing is not helpful in detecting signs.More importantly,red signs with a runNing Man graphic located in a low position have the best guiding effects on evacuees.The fixa-tion behaviors of evacuees vary according to sign features,particularly in regard to flashing and color.Evacuees stare longer at twinkling signs.Differences in the colors and positions of signs result in significantly different perceptual behaviors among evacuees.Our findings are useful for building designers and provide guidance for developing effective evacuation strategies.

BACKGROUND Ig G4-related disease(Ig G4-RD),an immune-mediated chronic progressive fibroinflammatory disease,can affect the functions of several organs.Some common characteristics can be observed in different Ig G4-RDs,such as higher prevalence in middle-aged and elderly male patients,raised serum Ig G4 levels,abundant infiltration of Ig G4-positive cells and fibrosis,diffuse or localized swelling of the affected organs,and good response to glucocorticoids treatment.CASE SUMmaRY A 72-year-old man complained of left upper abdominal pain 3 mo ago,and he was diagnosed with acute onset of chronic cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis in the local hospital.Pain improved after relevant treatment.Several days ago,his abdominal pain worsened,and he was admitted to our hospital for further treatment.Doppler ultrasound showed that the pancreas presented with sausagelike swelling and the parenchymal echo was diffusely reduced.Gallbladder volume was increased,while the wall was rough and thickened with bilateral signs.Furthermore,the left submandibular gland was enlarged,accompanied with significantly increased blood flow signals.Finally,we found that the adventitia of the abdominal aorta and right iliac artery was thickened locally.Serum Ig G4 was elevated to 12600 mg/L.Therefore,the patient was diagnosed with Ig G4-RD.After treatment with methylprednisolone,he had an uneventful course and was discharged in good condition.CONCLUSION Ig G4-RD can involve almost any organs.Ultrasound has a significant role in timely and accurately diagnosis.
