Regulator of G protein signaling 6 mediates exercise-induced recovery of hippocampal neurogenesis,learning,and memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease

Hippocampal neuronal loss causes cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer’s *** hippocampal neurogenesis is reduced in patients with Alzheimer’s *** stimulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis in rodents and improves memory and slows cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s ***,the molecular pathways for exercise-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and improved cognition in Alzheimer’s disease are poorly ***,regulator of G protein signaling 6(RGS6)was identified as the mediator of voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis in ***,we generated novel RGS6fl/fl;APP_(SWE) mice and used retroviral approaches to examine the impact of RGS6 deletion from dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells on voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and cognition in an amyloid-based Alzheimer’s disease mouse *** found that voluntary running in APP_(SWE) mice restored their hippocampal cognitive impairments to that of control *** cognitive rescue was abolished by RGS6 deletion in dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells,which also abolished running-mediated increases in adult hippocampal *** hippocampal neurogenesis was reduced in sedentary APP_(SWE) mice versus control mice,with basal adult hippocampal neurogenesis reduced by RGS6 deletion in dentate gyrus neural precursor ***6 was expressed in neurons within the dentate gyrus of patients with Alzheimer’s disease with significant loss of these RGS6-expressing ***,RGS6 mediated voluntary running-induced rescue of impaired cognition and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in APP_(SWE) mice,identifying RGS6 in dentate gyrus neural precursor cells as a possible therapeutic target in Alzheimer’s disease.

Novel Elastomeric Fabrics for the Treatment of Hypertrophic Burn Scars Using Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Antimicrobial Agents

In burn treatments,microorganisms on pressure garments during pressure therapy can prevent rehabilitation by causing functional,hygienic,and aesthetic difficulties. As bacterium is one of the most trouble-causing organisms,they can threaten patients causing infection during the long period of use of these *** burn pressure garments having durable antimicrobial property were developed using polyhexamethylene biguanide( PHMB)antimicrobial agent procedure on highly elastic nylon 66 /spandex fabrics in powernet,flat warp and weft knitted structures using paddry-cure method. Commercial wireless pressure sensors were used to control pressures at an acceptable medical range. Antimicrobial activity,wash durability,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analyses were conducted for the treated samples. Antimicrobial test results following AATCC 100 Test Method showed 99% reduction of bacteria for the fabric samples treated with PHMB. A small but significant decrease in antimicrobial activity was observed even after50 launderings. These treatments also yield good results to prevent odor,decrease infection by preventing and /or blocking microbial growth according to the antimicrobial mechanism and support reducing of scarring by providing a hygienic environment around the scar.

Evaluation of systemic risk factors in different optical coherence tomographic patterns of diabetic macular edema

AIM： To elucidate the relationship between systemic risk factors and different patterns of diabetic macular edema（DME） determined with optical coherence tomography（OCT）. METHODS： In this cross-sectional study, DME was classified by OCT as diffuse retinal thickness（DRT）, cystoid macular edema（CME） and serous retinal detachment（SRD） and the relationship between the systemic risk factors and DME patterns was evaluated. RESULTS： Of the 57 patients with DME, 21（36.8%） had DRT, 24（42.1%） had CME and 12（21.0%） had SRD. Microor macro-albuminuria was significantly higher in the DRT pattern（61.9%） compared with the SRD（50.0%） and CME patterns（25.0%; P=0.040）. Hemoglobin A1 c（Hb A1 c） level was significantly higher and patients were younger in the DRT pattern group（P=0.034, P=0.032）. Best corrected visual acuity was the worst and central macular thickness was the thickest in the CME pattern group. CONCLUSION： Micro-or macro-albuminuria may be more frequent and Hb A1 c level may be higher in patients with DRT. These patients are also seen to be younger than patients with non-DRT.

Long-term results of viscocanalostomy and phacoviscocanalostomy: a twelve-year follow-up study

AIMTo evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety results of viscocanalostomy and *** charts of 49 glaucoma patients who underwent viscocanalostomy or phacoviscocanalostomy surgery between February 1999 and August 2004 were reviewed retrospectively. Thirty-one eyes of 21 glaucoma patients who underwent filtering procedure with a postoperative follow-up of at least 5y were included in the study. Results of complete ophthalmologic examinations were recorded and statistically analyzed. Long-term surgical outcome was defined as an overall success when intraocular pressure (IOP) was found as ≤20 mm Hg with or without antiglaucomatous medication at the last follow-up visit, while it was defined as a complete success when IOP was measured ≤20 mm Hg without antiglaucomatous *** age was 68.1±9.6y (range: 32-81y). Mean follow-up time was 101.5±27.3mo (range: 60-144mo). Viscocanalostomy was performed in 8 eyes (25.8%) and phacoviscocanalostomy was performed in 23 eyes (74.2%). The mean preoperative IOP was 23.1±7.6 mm Hg with 2.1±1.0 medications, while mean IOP was 16.8±3.8 mm Hg with 0.9±1.1 medication at the last follow-up visit. Both the IOP decrease and the reduction in the antiglaucomatous medication were statistically significant (P<0.001 and P<0.001). No case required further glaucoma surgery. Overall success and complete success were found as 87.1% and 51.6%, respectively. Complete success rate was statistically higher in phacoviscocanalostomy group compared with the viscocanalostomy group (P=0.031), however there was no significant difference in overall success rate between two groups (P=0.072).CONCLUSIONBoth viscocanalostomy and phacoviscocanalostomy provide good IOP reduction in the long-term period.

Risk factors for childhood obesity: Do the birth weight, type of delivery, and mother's overweight have an implication on current weight status?

Background:The aim of this study was to identify risk factors,including the type of delivery,breastfeeding and its duration,birth weight,the timing of solid food introduction,the mother's education level at birth,and smoking status during pregnancy,that are associated with obesity in children living in ***:This study involving 4990 healthy children aged 2-14 years,at an outpatient clinic in a tertiary care hospital from June 2012 to July ***:The overall rates of overweight and obesity in children were 13.1% and 7.8%,*** demonstrated that 44.5% of children were delivered by caesarean *** all age groups,7.8% of children delivered by caesarean section were obese compared with 7.9% of children born *** significant association between caesarean section delivery and obesity in childhood was found in our study [odds ratio (OR)=0.98,95% confidence interval (CI)=0.64-2.87,P=0.454].There was also no association between duration of breastfeeding and the introduction of solid foods before 4 months or after 6 months of age and childhood obesity (OR=0.95,95% CI=0.69-1.3,P=0.771;OR=0.99,95% CI=0.64-1.53,P=0.261).Regression analyses revealed that children with birth weights greater than 3801 g or those with maternal body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 had an increased risk of being obese or overweight (OR=1.78,95% CI=1.19-2.65;OR=3.95,95% CI=1.94-5.81).Conclusions:This study demonstrated that increased birth weight and maternal BMI are significant risk factors for obesity in children living in Istanbul,*** relation between caesarean section delivery and childhood obesity was found in this study.
