transformation by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, an important tool in modern plant research, involves the integration of t-DNA initially present on a plasmid in agrobacteria into the genome of plant cells. the process of attachment of the agrobacteria to plant cells and the transport of t-DNA into the cell and further to the nucleus has been well described. However, the exact mechanism of integration into the host＇s DNA is still unclear, although several models have been proposed. During confirmation of t-DNA insertion alleles from the GABI-Kat collection of Arabidopsis thaliana mutants, we have generated about 34 000 sequences from the junctions between inserted t-DNA and adjacent genome regions. Here, we describe the evaluation of this dataset with regard to existing models for t-DNA integration. the results suggest that integration into the plant genome is mainly mediated by the endogenous plant DNA repair machinery. the observed integration events showed characteristics highly similar to those of repair sites of double- strand breaks with respect to microhomology and deletion sizes. In addition, we describe unexpected integration events, such as large deletions and inversions at the integration site that are relevant for correct interpretation of results from t-DNA insertion mutants in reverse genetics experiments.

Inter-organizational cooperation: A rehabilitation project based on cooperation between health care and three social service agencies

Purpose: Cooperation between organizations is an often-suggested remedy for handling unsolved borderland problems. However, actual projects aiming at cooperation are seldom very successful. the purpose here is to highlight obstacles related to cooperation between different organizations based on a case study of a rehabilitation project where health care and several social service organizations (social insurance, social welfare, and the local employment agency) were involved. Data were gathered through participation and interviews. Findings: It seems that efficient cooperation requires an understanding of the participating organizations’ differences in work logic as well as work practices. Furthermore, only certain fairly standardized “normal” problems may be handled through organized cooperation while non-routine exceptional problem requires a more fully integrated work organization. Implications: Obstacles to cooperation are highlighted and ways to improve the possibilities of cooperation between organizations are suggested although such possibilities are generally hampered by differences in work logic.

the Nordic countries, including Greenland, have a long tradition in mining. the industrial minerals sector is expanding in most Nordic countries and extensive development has taken place during the last few years. the main commodities mined are carbonate rocks, quartz, feldspar, apatite, olivine and talc. A number of different types of dimension stones are quarried in all countries. Rock aggregates are increasingly important, replacing sand and gravel aggregate as construction materials in some countries due to the need to protect ground water supplies.

the risk of thromboembolism is increased in inflammatory bowel disease and its symptoms may be overlooked. Furthermore, its treatment can be complex and is not without complications. We describe a case of an adolescent boy who developed a cerebral sinus venous thrombosis during a relapse of his ulcerative colitis and who, while on treatment with heparin, developed heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIt). the treatment was then switched to fondaparinux, a synthetic and selective inhibitor of activated factor .
