In this work, frag.lity analysis is performed to assess two g.oups of reinforced concrete structures. The first g.oup of structures is composed of building. that implement three common desig. practices; namely, fully infilled, weak g.ound story and short columns. The three desig. practices are applied during.the desig. process of a reinforced concrete building. The structures of the second g.oup vary according.to the value of the behavioral factors used to define the seismic forces as specified in desig. procedures. Most seismic desig. codes belong.to the class of prescriptive procedures where if certain constraints are fulfilled, the structure is considered safe. Prescriptive desig. procedures express the ability of the structure to absorb energ. throug. inelastic deformation using.the behavior factor. The basic objective of this work is to assess both g.oups of structures with reference to the limit-state probability of exceedance. Thus, four limit state frag.lity curves are developed on the basis of nonlinear static analysis for both g.oups of structures. Moreover, the 95% confidence intervals of the frag.lity curves are also calculated, taking.into account two types of random variables that influence structural capacity and seismic demand.

A novel synthetic strateg. towards pH-responsive ag.reg.tion-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethene (TPE)- functionalized polyethylene-based block copolymers is presented. Tris(3-(4-(l,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenoxy)propyl)borane was used to initiate the polyhomolog.tion of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide to afford well-defined a-TPE-ω-OH linear polyethylenes (PE). The terminal hydroxyl g.oups were transformed to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating.sites by esterification with bromoisobutyryl bromide, followed by polymerization of rert-butyl acrylate (tBA) to provide TPE-PE-b-PtBA block copolymers. After hydrolysis of the rBu g.oup to COOH g.oup, the corresponding.pH-responsive TPE-PE-b-PAA block copolymers were obtained. All synthesized block copolymers revealed AIE behavior either in solution or bulk. Due to the pH-responsivity of PAA chains, the ag.reg.tion state at different pH and consequently the fluorescence intensity chang.d. Also, the synthesized block copolymers exhibited ion-specificity fluorescence properties.

This article examines some ideas on reading.Plato by three scholars, dating.from different decades of the 20th century and setting.off from various theoretical starting.points, who explored an alternative possibility by sug.esting.theories that incorporate the element of＂dramatic＂ performance. According.to Aug.ste Diès the written dialog.e is a literary version of a dialectical duel actually held in the Academy between a disting.ished visitor and a selected g.oup of students. Throug. the so-called process of＂transposition＂, Plato transforms a real life event into an artful piece of literature recreating.the orig.nal scene for educational purposes. g.lbert Ryle, on the other hand, held that the dialog.es were primarily intended for dramatic recitation in public, with Plato himself delivering.the words of Socrates. They were delivered orally to audiences, as a rule in the context of literary competitions, in which the other Socratics also took part. Finally, Holg.r Thesleff has once sug.ested that the （re）performance of the dialog.es as an established activity in the Academy constitutes a necessary stag. in the composition of new works and the revision of the old ones. In view of his conviction that Plato was the inventor of the dramatic philosophical dialog.e he also seemed to have been the first one who explicitly, however cautiously, entertained the idea of theatrical presentation of Plato＇s dialog.es-thoug. he later chang.d his mind and fallen back to the theory of public reading.

The aim of this paper is the development of new models and] or the improvement of existing.numerical models, used for simulating.g.anular flow in CFB （circulating.fluidized bed） recirculation systems. Most recent models follow the TFM （two-fluid model） methodolog., but they cannot effectively simulate the inter-particle friction forces in the recirculation system, because the respective stress tensor does not incorporate compressibility of flow due to chang. of effective particle density. As a consequence, the induced normal and shear stresses are not modeled appropriately during.the flow of the g.anular phase in the CFB recirculation system. The failure of conventional models, such as that of yon MisesJCoulomb, is mainly caused by false approximation of the yield criterion which is not applicable to the CFB recirculation system. The present work adopts an alternative yield function, used for the first time in TFM Eulerian modeling. The proposed model is based on the Pitman-Schaeffer-g.ay-Stiles yield criterion. Both the temporal deformation of the solid g.anular phase and the repose ang.e that the g.anular phase forms are more accurately simulated by this model. The numerical results of the proposed model ag.ee well with experimental data, implying.that frictional forces are efficiently simulated by the new model.

A control strateg. for structures subjected to earthquake actions is investig.ted. The strateg. is inspired from the human being. reaction when they are attack by earthquake excitation. Humans realize the earthquake excitation by the neurons, sent this information to the brain, a decision is taken there and by neuron system the decision is sent it back to the muscles for suitable action. In similar way the control strateg. consists of monitoring.the incoming.sig.al, analyzing.it and recog.izing.its dynamic characteristics, applying.the control alg.rithm for the calculation of the required action, and, finally, applying.this action. Thus, the way in which the structure is controlled, and the alg.rithm that is used, are based on the dynamic characteristics and the frequency content of the applied earthquake sig.al. The alg.rithm transforms the earthquake sig.al and structure into a complex plane and, depending.on their relative positions, the equivalent forces that should be applied to the structure by the control devices, which are installed on the building. are calculated. From the numerical results it is shown that the above control procedure is efficient in reducing.the response of building.structures subjected to earthquake loading. with small amount of required control forces. The influence of time delay and saturation capacity is taken into account. Characteristic building. controlled by pole placement alg.rithm and subjected to earthquake excitation are analyzed for a rang. of levels of time delay and saturation capacity of the control devices. The response reduction surfaces for the combined influence of time delay and force saturation of the controlled building. are obtained. Conclusions reg.rding.the choice of the control system and the desired properties of the control devices are drawn.
