Adaptive thermal comfort in naturally ventilated hostels of warm and humid climatic region,Tiruchirappalli,India

Thermal comfort is an important factor in hostel buildings when the aim is to maximize the productivity of the *** to the extreme weather conditions,achieving thermal comfort in a hostel building in a hot and humid climate is even more *** conducted in naturally ventilated hostel buildings in warm-humid climates involved the influence of outdoor air temperature only up to 34.4℃ and have been conducted in a specific *** contrast,the Tiruchirappalli climate is characterized by a higher range of environmental ***,to understand the thermal comfort conditions and usage of the environmental controls in naturally ventilated hostel buildings at the higher range of the environmental variables,a thermal comfort field study spread over one year was carried out at the National Institute of Technology,Tiruchirappalli,India,in twenty-seven hostel *** study relies on field observation and thermal comfort responses from 2028 questionnaires collected from the students between September 2019 to August *** analysis revealed a neutral temperature of 29.5℃ and a comfort range from 26.1℃ to 32.8℃,indicating a wide range of ther-mal adaptation than suggested by the National Building Code of India and ASHRAE standard *** preferred temperature was 27.8℃,indicating that students preferred a cooler *** with sweating conditions extended the upper limit of thermal acceptability from 31.8℃ to 32.4℃.The use of a mosquito net can increase the probability of opening a *** indicated that overall behavioral adjustment could extend the comfort *** study results would be helpful to develop guidelines and designs for naturally ventilated hostel buildings in warm and humid climates that will contribute to reducing energy demand.

Evaluation of graphite depressants in a poly-metallic sulfide flotation circuit

Synthetic dyes are commonly used for graphite depression in poly-metallic flotation circuits; however,these dyes can be very expensive. The aim of this study is to evaluate performance of certain low-cost alternative depressants for a complex lead-zinc(Pb-Zn) ore rich in graphite(Gr-C) on a conventional mini pilot-scale flotation circuit. The reagents used were commercial and industrial grade starch; agro-based waste-sugarcane bagasse and charred(burnt) bagasse powder. The primary evaluation criteria were quality(grades) of lead and zinc concentrates, their recoveries(%), and graphite rejection(%) in the *** tests using nigrosine as graphite depressant showed 94.3% rejection of Gr-C. The results with commercial starch were found as effective with 93.8% graphite rejection. Furthermore, bagasse powder showed potential in improving product quality(36.4% and 65.6% Pb grade and recovery) with an intermediate effectiveness in graphite rejection(85.6%). The order of effectiveness in Gr-C rejection follows nigrosine % commercial starch > bagasse > industrial starch > charred bagasse. In addition, the effect these depressants on silver(byproduct) grade and recovery was also investigated.

Regression tree ensemble learning-based prediction of the heating and cooling loads of residential buildings

Building energy consumption is heavily dependent on its heating load(HL)and cooling load(CL).Therefore,an efficient building demand forecast is critical for ensuring energy savings and improving the operating efficacy of the heating,ventilation,and air conditioning(HVAC)*** and specialized energy-efficient building modeling technologies may offer a fair estimate of the influence of different construction ***,deploying these tools could be time-consuming and complex for the ***,in this article,an ensemble model based on decision trees and the least square-boosting(LS-boosting)algorithm known as the regression tree ensemble(RTE)is proposed for the accurate prediction of HL and *** hyper parameters of the RTE are optimized by shuffled frog leaping optimization(SFLA),which leads to *** regression(STR)and Gaussian process regression(GPR)based on different kernel functions are also designed for comparison *** demonstrate that the value of root mean squared error is reduced by 37%–68%and 30%–41%for HL and CL of residential buildings,respectively,by the proposed SRTE in comparison to other ***,the findings from the real dataset support the proposed model’s effectiveness in predicting HVAC energy *** can be concluded that the proposed SRTE is more effective and accurate than other methods for predicting the energy consumption of HVAC systems.

Evaluation of pneumatic inclined deck separator for high-ash Indian coals

Application of pneumatic separators in coal beneficiation is increasing rapidly over the last decade primarily due to their low capital and operating costs, and waste handling problems associated with traditional wet processing methods. Large amount of shale/rock that is extracted in coal production can be removed prior to transportation at the mine face by using this methodology. Due to the limited washing facilities in India, most of the thermal power plants burn raw coal from run-of-mine （ROM） to generate electricity. This practice causes poor utilization efficiency, high operating and maintenance costs, and high emission rates for the power plants. One potential method that can be utilized is the air-fluidized inclined vibrating deck technology. The technology was demonstrated on a pilot-scale at different coal washeries in India at a feed rate of 5-ton per hour. The pilot-scale evaluation showed that 20 %-25 % high-ash incombustible material can be eliminated from ROM feed with only minor losses in energy content （〈10 %） from respective ROM coal. Furthermore, a feasibility analysis showed significant economic gains in terms of transportation cost, improving power-plant efficiency, and reducing emissions rates by using the technology.

Performance analysis of combined cycle power plant

Combined cycle power plants （CCPPs） are in operation with diverse thermodynamic cycle configura- tions. Assortment of thermodynamic cycle for scrupulous locality is dependent on the type of fuel available and different utilities obtained from the plant. In the present paper, seven of the practically applicable configurations of CCPP are taken into consideration. Exergetic and energetic analysis of each component of the seven configurations is conducted with the help of computer programming tool, i.e., engineering equation solver （EES） at different pressure ratios. For Case 7, the effects of pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature and ambient relative humidity on the first and second law is studied. The thermodynamics analysis indicates that the exergy destruction in various components of the combined cycle is significantly affected by the overall pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature and pressure loss in air filter and less affected by the ambient relative humidity.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Zn-Mg-based layered double hydroxide coatings for the corrosion protection of copper in chloride and hydroxide media

Layered double hydroxides(LDHs)hinder corrosive elements by forming a double layer and locking them between its ***,LDHs are interesting materials in corrosion *** this work,Zn-Mg-based LDHs are grown over a copper substrate by using a hydrothermal *** types of Zn-Mg-based LDH coating are prepared based on hydrothermal reaction *** types are characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy,high-resolution scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray analysis,atomic force microscopy,and X-ray *** show that the two types of LDH coating are successfully grown on copper;however,they differ in thickness and structural *** testing of the LDH coatings is executed in 0.1 M Na Cl and 0.1 M Na OH through alternating current impedance measurements and Tafel polarization *** show that L48 gives more than 90%protection to copper,which is higher than the protection provided by ***,both LDH coatings(L24 and L48)are more effective corrosion inhibitors in Na Cl than in Na OH,suggesting that the LDH coatings can more efficiently exchange Cl ions than OH ions.

A New Design Approach for Nearly Linear Phase Stable IIR Filter using Fractional Derivative

In this paper,a new design method for digital infinite impulse response(IIR)filters with nearly linear-phase response is presented using fractional derivative constraints(FDCs).In the proposed method,design problem of an IIR frlter is constructed as the minimization of phase error between the desired and designed phase response of an allpass filter(APF)such that the designed lowpass filter(LPF)or highpass frlter(HPF)yields less passband(ep),and stopband errors(es)with optimal stopband attenuation(As).In order to have accurate passband(pb)response,FDCs are imposed on appropriate reference frequency,where the optimality of these FDCs are ensured by using a new greedy based sorting *** simulated results reflect the efficiency of the proposed method in term of improved passband response along with better transition ***,small reduction in^is observed within the allowable limit,when compared to noin-fractional design approach,but the designed filter remains immune to wordlength(WL)effect.

India became an observer in Arctic Council in 2013 and has three research stations operational in the poles,including“Maitri”commissioned in 1989 and“Bharati”commissioned in 2012 at Antarctic and“Himadri”at *** the Government of India has consistently been extending full support to the research endeavours yet the same is bogged by inadequate research output,lack of dedicated polar research vessel and other bureaucratic bottlenecks.A massive void in the Indian scientific pursuits is that India does not possess a polar research vessel or an icebreaker and has to rely on chartered vessels,seriously limiting its research timeframe as well as huge economic drain and thus compromising the scientific *** cleft in the professed research narrative despite having a physical presence for over 3 decades in the polar regions and the proposal for acquisition of a polar research vessel having been approved in June 2010 yet the same is yet to be operationalised which is seriously impinging the scientific research as well as the professed commitment to Arctic ***,India has released its draft Arctic Policy and had sought public comments thereon till 26 January 21 before its ***’s draft policy reiterates the oft stated goals of scientific research,connectivity,global governance and international cooperation,and human development with emphasis on Indian human resource *** inspiration of a delayed Indian policy on the High North appears to be the Chinese white paper of *** scientific pursuits can propel the strategic engagement in the region to greater levels by extensive collaboration and cooperation with several other nations present *** attempts so far have remained acutely short of the promise and India should build on its strengths for obtaining a leadership position in this strategically vital and economically lucrative region.

In-plane compression experiments are performed on 3D fine weave pierced C/C composite at a wide strain rate range of 0.0001/s-1000/*** in-plane compressive failure mechanism of the composite at quasi-static and high strain rates is analyzed by a scanning electron *** results show that the in-plane compressive modulus,maximum stress and the corresponding strain increase with increasing strain *** quasi-static in-plane compressive failure mode of the 3D fine weave pierced C/C composite is characterized by the shear failure at the angle of 45°and the local buckling of the^direction fiber *** comparison,the high strain rate in-plane compression failure mode of the composite is characterized by the compressive fracture of the interlaminar matrix and the progressive compression failure of the a>direction fiber bundles.A strain-rate-dependent in-plane compressive constitutive model is proposed to predict the dynamic in-plane compressive response of the *** proposed constitutive model is verified by experimental data.
