In this,the first of two papers,the roles of key features of any landscape in determining potentials for erosional losses of soil and water are considered from an agro-ecological *** this light,the effectiveness of past commonly-accepted approaches to soil and water conservation are often found to have been *** many cases they have tackled symptoms of land degradation without appreciating fully the background causes,which often relate to inadequate matching of land-use/land-management with features of the landscape.A number of reasons for this mismatch are *** the ecological background to land husbandry(as defined below)will improve the effectiveness of attempts to tackle land *** particular,an ecologically based approach to better land husbandry helps to foresee potential problems in some detail,so that appropriate forward planning can be undertaken to avoid *** paper describes some practical ways of undertaking an appropriate survey of significant landscape features,enabling the definition and mapping of discrete areas of different land-use incapability *** is accompanied by an example of how the outcome was interpreted and used to guide the selection of appropriate areas which were apparently suitable for growing flue-cured tobacco within an area of ca.140 km^(2) in *** process relied on knowledge and experience in various disciplines(interpretation of air-photos,topographic survey,soil survey,vegetation analysis,hydrology,soil&water conservation,geology,agronomy)so as to ensure that the mapping process was based on the principles of better land husbandry.

An intelligent system for egg quality classification based on visible-infrared transmittance spectroscopy

The potential of the visible infrared(Vis–IR)(400–1100 nm)transmittance method to assess the internal quality(freshness)of intact chicken egg during storage at a temperature of 30±7C and 25±4%relative humidity was *** hundred chicken egg samples were used for measuring freshness and spectra collection during egg storage(up to 25 days).Two correlation models,firstly between Haugh unit(HU)and storage time,and secondly between the yolk coefficient(YC)and storage time,were developed and yielded correlation coefficients(R^2)of 0.86 and 0.96,*** models spanned the period for which egg quality decreased dramatically and are statistically significant(P<0.05).In addition,to reduce the dimensionality of the spectra and extract effective wavelengths,two methods were developed based on principal component analysis(PCA)and a genetic algorithm(GA).The output of PCA and GA were also used comparatively to design an egg quality intelligent *** result of the analyses indicated that identification ratio of GAwith fast Fourier transform(FFT)preprocessing was superior to other methods,and that the quality classification rates of this method for one-day-old eggs are 100%.This study shows that identification of an egg’s freshness using NIR spectroscopy with GA and artificial neural network(ANN)is reliable.

Non-functioning well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor of the extrahepatic bile duct:an unusual suspect?

BACKGROUND:Neuroendocrine tumors(NETs)arising in the biliary tree are extremely rare,and 37 cases were identified in the English literature. METHODS:A well-differentiated NET was found arising from the junction of the cystic and common hepatic ducts, in a 51-year-old male presenting with pedal edema and weight loss with abnormal liver enzymes and a normal serum bilirubin *** mass was seen on radiological imaging and biopsy of the liver was suggestive of an early cholangiopathy.A bile leak complicating the liver biopsy led to an ERCP that demonstrated a filling defect suggestive of a mass in the common bile duct(CBD). RESULTS:He underwent a successful excision of the tumor with a Roux-en-Y *** diagnosis of NET was made on histological and immunohistochemical analysis of the resected *** remains well and disease free 22 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS:Recognition of biliary NET continues to be a challenge and an increased awareness of these tumors in rare sites will result in optimal management of these tumors.

Liver resection in liver transplant recipients

BACKGROUND:Liver resection after liver transplantation is a relatively uncommon *** for liver resection include hepatic artery thrombosis(HAT),non- anastomotic biliary stricture(ischemic biliary lesions), liver abscess,liver trauma and recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Organ shortage and lower survival after re-transplantation have encouraged us to make attempts at graft salvage. METHODS:Eleven resections at a mean of 59 months after liver transplantation were made over 18 *** for liver resection included HCC recurrence in 4 patients, ischemic cholangiopathy,segmental HAT,sepsis and infected hematoma in 2 each,and ischemic segmentⅣafter split liver transplantation in 1. RESULTS:There was no perioperative *** included one re-laparotomy for small bowel perforation, one bile leak treated conservatively,one right subphrenic collection,one wound infection and 5 episodes of Gram- negative *** patient underwent re-transplantation 4 months after resection for chronic *** were 3 deaths,two from HCC recurrence and one from post- transplant lymphoproliferative *** overall mean follow-up after resection was 48 months. CONCLUSIONS:Liver resection in liver transplant recipients is safe,and has good outcome in selected patients and avoids re-transplantation in the majority of patients. Recipients with recurrent HCC in graft may benefit from resection,but cure is uncommon.

Chylous ascites after pancreatico-duodenectomy

BACKGROUND:Chylous ascites(CA) following pancreatico-duodenectomy(PD) is a rare complication secondary to disruption of the lymphatics during extended retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. The majority of cases do not develop CA,possibly due to patency of the proximal thoracic duct and good collaterals. CA may be due to a consequence of occult obstruction of the proximal thoracic duct by malignant infiltration or tumor embolus. This study was to report the incidence of CA and its outcomes of management. METHODS:A retrospective search of our liver database was performed using the 'pancreatico-duodenectomy','chylous ascites' from January 2000 to December 2005. The medical records of CA patients and their management and outcome were reviewed. RESULTS:In 138 patients who had undergone PD in our centre for pancreatic malignancy,3 were identified with CA and managed by abdominal paracentesis. CA resolved in 2 patients with low fat medium chain triglyceride diet alone and 1 patient had total parenteral nutrition(TPN) for persistent CA. Resolution of CA occurred in these 3 patients at a median follow-up of 4 weeks(range 4-12 weeks). Histologically,resected specimen confirmed pancreatic adenocarcinoma in all the patients. Two patients developed loco-regional recurrences at a median follow up of 8 months(range 6-10 months). And the other was currently disease free at a 10-month follow up. CONCLUSIONS:CA as an uncommon postoperative complication requires frequent paracentesis,prolonged hospital stay,and delayed adjuvant chemotherapy. CA istreated with low fat medium chain triglyceride diet or occasionally TPN is required.

BACKGROUND: hronic liver disease has been considered a contraindication to radical surgery for intra-abdominal tumors because of the risk of decompensation. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for cancer treated from January 2000 to December 2006 at our center, 4 patients were identified with operable pancreatic tumors and well-compensated chronic liver disease. The preoperative staging, decompression of the biliary tree, liver biopsy, Child-Turcot-Pugh and MELD scores were ***: All patients underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy successfully with minimal blood loss, and no peri-operative blood transfusions or liver decompensation. There was no postoperative mortality. Two patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. One patient died with recurrent disease at 18 months, one is alive with disease recurrence, and two are alive and disease ***: Patients with pancreatic cancer and well-compensated chronic liver disease should routinely be considered for radical surgery at specialist hepatobiliary centres with expertise available to manage complex liver disease.

Targeting inflammation in pancreatic cancer: Clinical translation

Preclinical modelling studies are beginning to aid development of therapies targeted against key regulators of pancreatic cancer progression. Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive, stromally-rich tumor, from which few people survive. Within the tumor microenvironment cellular and extracellular components exist, shielding tumor cells from immune cell clearance, and chemotherapy, enhancing progression of the disease. The cellular component of this microenvironment consists mainly of stellate cells and inflammatory cells. New findings suggest that manipulation of the cellular component of the tumor microenvironment is possible to promote immune cell killing of tumor cells. Here we explore possible immunogenic therapeutic strategies. Additionally extracellular stromal elements play a key role in protecting tumor cells from chemotherapies targeted at the pancreas. We describe the experimental findings and the pitfalls associated with translation of stromally targeted therapies to clinical trial. Finally, we discuss the key inflammatory signal transducers activated subsequent to driver mutations in oncogenic Kras in pancreatic cancer. We present the preclinical findings that have led to successful early trials of STAT3 inhibitors in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Land surface temperature andcharacteristics for a raingarden insoil moisture distributionFitzroy Gardens, Melbourne

To better understand the cooling effect of raingarden in Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne, as well as it benefits for an urban microclimate, two rounds of 36-h microclimate monitoring at the raingarden were *** surface temperature and soil moisture were analyzed according to monitoring data. The results showa clea raingarden cooling effect in summer. The largest difference o land surface temperatures inside and outside the raingarden can reach 23. 6 ℃, and the diurnal variation in temperature insid the raingarden was much less than that outside the *** soil moisture increased rapidly after irrigation, with th increase in the volumetric water content( VWC) of 2% to3. 6%. The soil moistures of adjacent irrigated garden bed and grass were higher than those inside the *** soil moisture helps guide raingarden irrigation.
