Self-healing metals possess the capability to autonomously repair structural damage during service. While self-healing concepts remain challenging to be realized in metals and metallic systems due to the small atomic volume of the mobile atoms, the slow diffusion unless at high temperatures and the strong isotropic metallic bonds, the scientific interest has increased sharply and promising progress is obtained. This article provides a comprehensive and updated review on the developments and limitations associated with the various modes of potentially healable damage induced in metals and alloys, i.e., stressinduced damage, irradiation-induced damage in bulk materials and contact damage in corrosion protective coatings. The spontaneous intrinsic healing mechanisms not requiring external assistance other than the material operating at the right temperature and an assisted healing mechanism with external intervention are reviewed. Promising strategies to achieve self-healing in metals are identified. Finally, we give some prospects for future research directions in self-healing metals.

Enhanced reversibility of the magnetoelastic transition in(Mn,Fe)2(P,Si)alloys via minimizing the transition-induced elastic strain energy

Magnetocaloric materials undergoing reversible phase transitions are highly desirable for magnetic refrigeration applications.(Mn,Fe)_(2)(P,Si)alloys exhibit a giant magnetocaloric effect accompanied by a magnetoelastic transition,while the noticeable irreversibility causes drastic degradation of the magnetocaloric properties during consecutive cooling *** the present work,we performed a comprehensive study on the magnetoelastic transition of the(Mn,Fe)_(2)(P,Si)alloys by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy,in situ field-and temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction as well as density functional theory calculations(DFT).We found a generalized relationship between the thermal hysteresis and the transition-induced elastic strain energy for the(Mn,Fe)_(2)(P,Si)*** thermal hysteresis was greatly reduced from 11 to 1 K by a mere 4 at.%substitution of Fe by Mo in the Mn_(1.15)Fe_(0.80)P_(0.45)Si_(0.55)*** reduction is found to be due to a strong reduction in the transition-induced elastic strain *** significantly enhanced reversibility of the magnetoelastic transition leads to a remarkable improvement of the reversible magnetocaloric properties,compared to the parent *** on the DFT calculations and the neutron diffraction experiments,we also elucidated the underlying mechanism of the tunable transition temperature for the(Mn,Fe)_(2)(P,Si)family,which can essentially be attributed to the strong competition between the covalent bonding and the ferromagnetic exchange *** present work provides not only a new strategy to improve the reversibility of a first-order magnetic transition but also essential insight into the electron-spin-lattice coupling in giant magnetocaloric materials.

基于磁热效应的室温磁制冷技术,因其具有绿色环保、高效节能、稳定低噪等显著优点,有望颠覆传统蒸气压缩制冷技术,应用到日常生活、医疗卫生、交通运输、国防科技等领域,具有重要的社会价值和经济价值。(Mn,Fe)(P,Si)合金因其价格低廉、工作温域易于调控、磁热性能优异等显著特性,在室温磁制冷领域具有重要应用前景。然而,(Mn,Fe)(P,Si)合金存在着热滞大、相变可逆性差等问题,限制了其在制冷循环中的制冷效率。(Mn,Fe)(P,Si)合金的热滞与其一级磁弹相变密切相关,本研究利用球差透射电镜、原位变温/变磁场中子衍射和第一性原理计算等手段,深入研究了其一级磁弹相变过程,建立了该体系热滞与相变诱导弹性应变能之间的关联性,并通过成分调控,实现了超低热滞,极大增强了其可逆磁热性能。本研究不仅揭示了一级磁相变材料中电子-晶格-自旋强耦合作用,也为巨磁熵变材料的应用提供了理论指导。

目的:吸力式基础具有投资费用低、施工时间短、无噪音和可重复使用等优点,因此被广泛应用在海洋工程领域。本文针对吸力式基础设计中的关键问题,主要综述现有设计理论,指出理论缺陷,并给出设计建议。创新点:综述砂土、粘土和成层土中吸力式基础的安装、回收、基础承载力、基础沉降和服役性能中的关键科学问题和现有设计理论。方法:1.基于文献报道的现场试验和模型试验,针对吸力式基础安装过程中的沉贯阻力、临界吸力和土塞效应,评估现有设计理论的准确性;2.分析粘土和砂土中吸力式基础的完全排水、完全不排水和部分排水条件下静力和循环承载力计算理论;3.针对吸力式基础的长期服役性能,分析荷载引起的基础变形、固结沉降、循环再固结沉降和极端荷载下的"棘轮效应"。结论:1.现有的吸力式基础安装中沉贯阻力计算理论没有普适性;对于临界吸力的计算,由于没有考虑"土拱效应",理论计算值均低估了安装吸力。2.对于粘土中吸力式基础承载力的计算需要考虑循环作用下土体的强度弱化和基础-土间空隙引起的承载力降低,而砂土中基础承载力计算需要考虑排水条件的影响。3.对于吸力式基础的长期服役性能,特别是基础变形的计算,目前还缺少成熟的计算理论。

Quenching of the red Mn^(4+) luminescence in Mn^(4+)-doped fluoride LED phosphors

Red-emitting Mn^(4+)-doped fluorides are a promising class of materials to improve the color rendering and luminous efficacy of white light-emitting diodes(w-LEDs).For w-LEDs,the luminescence quenching temperature is very important,but surprisingly no systematic research has been conducted to understand the mechanism for thermal quenching in Mn^(4+)-doped ***,concentration quenching of the Mn^(4+) luminescence can be an issue but detailed investigations are *** this work,we study thermal quenching and concentration quenching in Mn^(4+)-doped fluorides by measuring luminescence spectra and decay curves of K2TiF6:Mn^(4+) between 4 and 600 K and for Mn^(4+) concentrations from 0.01%to 15.7%.Temperature-dependent measurements on K2TiF6:Mn^(4+) and other Mn^(4+)-doped phosphors show that quenching occurs through thermally activated crossover between the ^(4)T_(2) excited state and ^(4)A_(2) ground *** quenching temperature can be optimized by designing host lattices in which Mn^(4+) has a high 4T2 state ***-dependent studies reveal that concentration quenching effects are limited in K_(2)TiF_(6):Mn^(4+)up to 5%Mn^(4+).This is important,as high Mn^(4+)concentrations are required for sufficient absorption of blue LED light in the parity-forbidden Mn^(4+)d–d *** even higher Mn^(4+) concentrations(>10%),the quantum efficiency decreases,mostly due to direct energy transfer to quenching sites(defects and impurity ions).Optimization of the synthesis to reduce quenchers is crucial for developing more efficient highly absorbing Mn^(4+) *** present systematic study provides detailed insights into temperature and concentration quenching of Mn^(4+) emission and can be used to realize superior narrow-band red Mn^(4+) phosphors for w-LEDs.

Testicular biopsy was considered the cornerstone of male infertility diagnosis for many years in men with unexplained infertility and azoospermia. Recent guidelines for male infertility have limited the indications for a diagnostic testicular biopsy to the confirmation of obstructive azoospermia in men with normal size testes and normal reproductive hormones. Nowadays, testicular biopsies are mainly performed for sperm harvesting in men with non-obstructive azoospermia, to be used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Testicular biopsy is also performed in men with risk factors for testicular malignancy. In a subgroup of infertile men, there is an increased risk for carcinoma in situ of the testis, especially in men with a history of cryptorchidism and testicular malignancy and in men with testicular atrophy. Ultrasonographic abnormalities, such as testicular microlithiasis, inhomogeneous parenchyma and lesions of the testes, further increase the risk of carcinoma in situ （CIS） in these men. For an accurate histological classification, proper tissue handling, fixation, preparation of the specimen and evaluation are needed. A standardized approach to testicular biopsy is recommended. In addition, approaches to the detection of CIS of the testis testicular immunohistochemistry are mandatory. In this mini-review, we describe the current indications for testicular biopsies in the diagnosis and management of male infertility.

Large-scale transportation and storage of wood pellets:Investigation of the change in physical properties

The change in physical properties of wood pellets,with a focus on particle size distributions due to pellet breakage and attrition,was studied in a large-scale(∼450 ton/h)transportation *** locations with a high probability of breakage through the whole transportation system were chosen and sampled to study the effect of transportation system design and operation on the mechanical properties of *** density,mechanical durability,moisture content,and particle size distribution of pellets were characterized for each *** of variance showed that there were significant differences between the percentages of small particles(<5.6 mm)in the samples taken at different locations,especially at one with a vertical free fall of 7.8 *** average,this relatively long drop increased the proportion of particles<5.6 mm in the samples from 8.73%to 14.09%,and that of particles<3.15 mm from 4.82%to 9.01%.Moreover,the measurements showed a wide deviation in the mechanical durability values,between a minimum of 90.8%and a maximum of 98.7%,which were not correlated to the sampling points but related to pellet *** can be concluded that pellet transportation systems require more dedicated design strategies to prevent breakage and attrition.

Modeling shoreline sand waves on the coasts of Namibia and Angola

The southwestern（SW） coast of Africa（Namibia and Angola） features long sandy beaches and a wave climate dominated by energetic swells from the Southsouthwest（SSW）,therefore approaching the coast with a very high *** images reveal that along that coast there are many shoreline sand waves with wavelengths ranging from 2 to 8 km.A more detailed study,including a Fourier analysis of the shoreline position,yields the wavelengths（among this range） with the highest spectral density ***,it becomes apparent that at least some of the sand waves are dynamically active rather than being controlled by the geological setting.A morphodynamic model is used to test the hypothesis that these sand waves could emerge as free morphodynamic instabilities of the coastline due to the obliquity in wave *** is found that the period of the incident water waves,T;,is crucial to establish the tendency to stability or instability,instability increasing for decreasing period,whilst there is some discrepancy in the observed *** results for T;= 7-8 s clearly show the tendency for the coast to develop free sand waves at about 4 km wavelength within a few years,which migrate to the north at rates of 0.2-0.6 km yr;.For larger T;or steeper profiles,the coast is stable but sand waves originated by other mechanisms can propagate downdrift with little decay.

BACKGROUND Current literature shows no clear answer on the question how to manage the capsule after hip *** patient reported outcome measures there seems to be no difference between capsular repair or unrepaired *** To evaluate and compare the integrity of the hip capsule measured on a magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)scan after capsular repair or unrepaired *** A case series study was performed;a random sample of patients included in a trial comparing capsular repair vs unrepaired capsulotomy had a postoperative MRI *** presence of a capsular defect and gap size were independently evaluated on *** A total of 28 patients(29 hips)were *** demographics were comparable between treatment *** were 2 capsular defects in the capsular repair group and 7 capsular defects in the unrepaired capsulotomy group(P=0.13).In the group of patients with a defect,median gap sizes at the acetabular side were 5.9 mm(range:2.7-9.0)in the repaired and 8.0 mm(range:4.5-18.0)in the unrepaired group(P=0.462).At the muscular side gap sizes were 6.6 mm(range:4.1-9.0)in the repaired group and 11.5 mm(range:3.0-18.0)in the unrepaired group(P=0.857).The calculated Odds ratio(OR)for having a capsular defect with an increasing lateral center-edge(CE)angle was 1.12(P=0.06).The OR for having a capsular defect is lower in the group of patients that underwent a labral repair with an OR of 0.1(P=0.05).CONCLUSION There is no significant difference in capsular defects between capsular repair or unrepaired *** clinical characteristics our case series shows that a larger CE angle increases the likelihood of a capsular defect and the presence of a labral repair decreases the likelihood of a capsular defect.
