Bacterial composition associated with different traditions of salted and dried fish across countries

Drying of fish to improve storage capabilities, often under hyperosmotic conditions, is a widespread and longstanding practice in many cultures throughout the world. Several drying practices are applied, and they often reflect a cultural influence. The purpose of drying is to preserve fish by lowering the availability of water to microorganisms. However, because drying of fish is globally widespread and drying procedures are very diverse, microbial communities occurring in the dried fish products might differ. In this study, 63 dried fish products, prepared from 8 different fish species, were collected from several parts of the world (greenland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, the Faroe Islands, japan, and Bangladesh) and the microbiotas from these products were analysed and compared following amplification and sequencing of the V4-region of the 16S rRNA. overall, the dominant bacterial taxa associated with the fish were the genera Photobacterium , Psychrobacteria , Vibrio , and Pseudomonas , but large differences occurred across samples with a strong influence of the country of origin (in particular samples from Bangladesh) and salinity of the fish products. Moreover, industrially processed filets were readily distinguishable from traditionally processed ones. In contrast, the fish species from which the filets were prepared appeared to have less effect. These results suggest that drying practices can have a strong effect on the microbiota of the resulting products. For several of the fish species tested, this constitutes the first report regarding the composition of the microbiota associated with the resulting fish products.

Testicular biopsy was considered the cornerstone of male infertility diagnosis for many years in men with unexplained infertility and azoospermia. Recent guidelines for male infertility have limited the indications for a diagnostic testicular biopsy to the confirmation of obstructive azoospermia in men with normal size testes and normal reproductive hormones. Nowadays, testicular biopsies are mainly performed for sperm harvesting in men with non-obstructive azoospermia, to be used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Testicular biopsy is also performed in men with risk factors for testicular malignancy. In a subgroup of infertile men, there is an increased risk for carcinoma in situ of the testis, especially in men with a history of cryptorchidism and testicular malignancy and in men with testicular atrophy. Ultrasonographic abnormalities, such as testicular microlithiasis, inhomogeneous parenchyma and lesions of the testes, further increase the risk of carcinoma in situ （CIS） in these men. For an accurate histological classification, proper tissue handling, fixation, preparation of the specimen and evaluation are needed. A standardized approach to testicular biopsy is recommended. In addition, approaches to the detection of CIS of the testis testicular immunohistochemistry are mandatory. In this mini-review, we describe the current indications for testicular biopsies in the diagnosis and management of male infertility.

Insect host-parasite coevolution in the light of experimental evolution

The many ways parasites can impact their host species have been the focus of intense study using a range of approaches. A particularly promising but under-used method in this context is experimental evolution, because it allows targeted manipulation of known populations exposed to contrasting conditions. The strong potential of applying this method to the study of insect hosts and their associated parasites is demonstrated by the few available long-term experiments where insects have been exposed to parasites. In this review, we summarize these studies, which have delivered valuable insights into the evolution of resistance in response to parasite pressure, the underlying mechanisms, as well as correlated genetic responses. We further assess findings from relevant artificial selection studies in the interrelated contexts of immunity, life history, and reproduction. In addition, we discuss a number of well-studied Tribolium castaneum-Nosema whitei coevolution experiments in more detail and provide suggestions for research. Specifically, we suggest that future experiments should also be performed using nonmodel hosts and should incorporate contrasting experimental conditions, such as population sizes or envi- ronments. Finally, we expect that adding a third partner, for example, a second parasite or symbiont, to a host-parasite system could strongly impact （co）evolutionary dynamics.

In this paper we study the effect of rolling friction on the dynamics in a single spout fluidized bed using Discrete Element Method （DEM） coupled to Computational Fluid Dynamics （CFD）. In a first step we neglect rolling friction and show that the results delivered by the open source CFD-DEM framework applied in this study agree with previous simulations documented in literature. In a second step we include a rolling friction sub-model in order to investigate the effect of particle non-sphericity. The influence of particle-particle as well as particle-wall rolling friction on the flow in single spout fluidized bed is studied separately. Adequate rolling friction model parameters are obtained using first principle DEM simulations and data from literature. Finally, we demonstrate the importance of correct modelling of rolling friction for coupled CFD-DEM simulations of spout fluidized beds. We show that simulation results can be improved significantly when applying a rolling friction model, and that experimental data from literature obtained with Positron Emission Particle Trackin~ fPEPT） technique can be satisfactorily reoroduced.

The current progress of system miniaturization relies extensively on the development of 3D machining techniques to increase the areal structure *** this work,a wafer-scale out-of-plane 3D silicon(Si)shaping technology is reported,which combines a multistep plasma etching process with corner *** multistep plasma etching procedure results in high aspect ratio structures with stacked semicircles etched deep into the sidewall and thereby introduces corners with a proper geometry for the subsequent corner *** to the geometrical contrast between the gaps and sidewall,residues are left only inside the gaps and form an inversion mask inside the *** this mask,octahedra and donuts can be etched in a repeated manner into Si over the full wafer area,which demonstrates the potential of this technology for constructing high-density 3D structures with good dimensional control in the bulk of Si wafers.

Normal reference ranges for semen quality and their relations to fecundity

Several recent studies have shown that the fecundity of a man decreases progressively with sperm concentrations below 40 million spermatozoa per mL. Therefore, it is unfortunate that the new World Health organization guidelines for semen analysis recommend lowering the lower cutoff value for normal sperm concentration from 20 to 15 million spermatozoa per mL. As a result large groups of subfertile men across the world may not receive appropriate andrological help in the future.

This paper presents a goal based methodology for HAZoP studies in which a functional model of the plant is used to assist in a functional decomposition of the plant starting from the purpose of the plant and continuing down to the function of a single node,e.g. a pipe *** approach leads to nodes with simple functions such as liquid transport,gas transport,liquid storage,gas-liquid contacting *** the functions of the nodes the selection of relevant process variables and deviation variables follow *** knowledge required to perform the pre-meeting HAZoP task of dividing the plant along functional hnes is that of chemical unit operations and transport processes plus a some familiarity with the plant a *** the preparatory work may be performed by a chemical engineer with just an introductory course in risk assessment. The goal based methodology lends itself direcdy for implementation into a computer aided reasoning tool for HAZoP studies to perform root cause and consequence *** a tool will facilitate finding causes far away from the site of the deviation.A Functional HAZoP Assistant is proposed and investigated in a HAZoP study of an industrial scale Indirect Vapour Recompression Distillation pilot Plant(IVaRDiP) at the *** Chemical and Biochemical *** study shows that the goal based methodology using a functional approach provides a very efficient paradigm for facilitating HAZoP studies and for enabling reasoning to reveal potential hazards in safety critical operations.
