Acute liver failure (ALF) is a devastating clinical syndrome characterised by progressive encephalopathy, coagulopathy, and circulatory dysfunction, which commonly leads to multiorgan failure and death. central to the pathogenesis of ALF is activation of the immune system with mobilisation of cellular effectors and massive production of cytokines. As key components of the innate immune system, monocytes and macrophages are postulated to play a central role in the initiation, progression and resolution of ALF. ALF in humans follows a rapidly progressive clinical course that poses inherent difficulties in delineating the role of these pivotal immune cells. Therefore, a number of experimental models have been used to study the pathogenesis of ALF. Here we consider the evidence from experimental and human studies of ALF on the role of monocytes and macrophages in acute hepatic injury and the ensuing extrahepatic manifestations, including functional monocyte deactivation and multiple organ failure.

AIM： To design a classification tool for the histological assessment of hepatocellular carcinoma （Hcc）, dysplastic nodules （DN）, and macroregenerative nodules （MRN） in cirrhotic liver. METHODS： Two hundred and twelve hepatocellular nodules （106 Hcc; 74 IRN, 32 DN） were assessed systematically, quantitatively, and semiquantitatively as appropriate for 10 histological features that have been described as helpful in distinguishing small Hcc, DN, and MRN in cirrhotic livers. The data were analyzed by multiple correspondence analysis （McA）. RESULTS： HcA distributed Hcc, DN, and HRN as defined by traditional histological evaluation as well as the individual histological variables, in a ＂malignancy scale＂. Based on the McA data representation, we created a classification tool, which categorizes an individual nodular lesion as MRN, DN, or Hcc based on the balance of all histological features （i.e., vascular invasion, capsular invasion, tumor necrosis, tumor heterogeneity, reticulin loss, capillarization of sinusoids, trabecular thickness, nuclear atypia, and mitotic activity）. The classification tool classified most （83%） of a validation set of 47 nodules in the same way as the routine histological assessment. No discrepandes were present for DN and MRN between the routine histological assignment and the dassification tool. Of 25 Hcc assigned by routine assessment in the validation set, 8 were assigned to the DN category by the classification tool. cONcLUSION： We have designed a classification tool for the histological assessment of Hcc and its putative precursors in cirrhotic liver. Application of this toolsystematically records histological features of diagnostic importance in the evaluation of small Hcc.

The activity of two cu/SiO2 catalysts prepared by the chemisorption hydrolysis technique has been tested in the hydrogenation reaction of 3-methyl-cyclohexanone. Both catalysts were found to be very active at 60 ℃ and 1 atm of H2. characterization of the materials by FT-IR of adsorbed cO and TEM put in light the presence of well formed cu cristallites. By assuming a cuboctahedral model we could show that the hydrogenation activity is linked to high coordination sites on the metal particle. A comparison is also reported with a sample prepared by ammonia evaporation that was found to be inactive in the hydrogenation reaction under the same experimental conditions.

BAcKGROUND Laminopathies are rare diseases,whose cardiac manifestations are heterogeneous and,especially in their initial stage,similar to those of more common conditions,such as ischemic heart *** diagnosis is essential,as these conditions can first manifest themselves with sudden cardiac *** complications usually appear before structural complications;therefore,it is important to take into consideration these rare genetic disorders for the differential diagnosis of brady and tachyarrhythmias,even when left ventricle systolic function is still *** SUMMARY A 60-year-old man,without history of previous disorders,presented in September 2019 to the emergency department because of the onset of syncope associated with *** patient was diagnosed with a high-grade atrioventricular block.A dual chamber pacemaker was implanted,but after the onset of a sustained ventricular tachycardia during physical exertion,a drug eluting stent was implanted on an intermediate stenosis on the left anterior descending artery,which had previously been considered non-haemodynamically *** the follow-up,the treating cardiologist,suspicious of the overall clinical picture,recommended a genetic test for the diagnosis of cardiomyopathies,which tested positive for a pathogenetic mutation of the lamin A/c *** awaiting the result of the genetic test and,later,the pacemaker to be upgraded to a biventricular defibrillator,a remote monitoring device was given to the patient in 2019-related *** case aims to raise awareness of the cardiological manifestations of laminopathies,which can be dangerously misdiagnosed as other, more common conditions.

Epigenetics finely tunes gene expression at a functionallevel without modifying the DNA sequence, thereby contributing to the complexity of genomic regulation. Satellite cells(Scs) are adult muscle stem cells that are important for skeletal post-natal muscle growth, homeostasis and repair. The understanding of the epigenome of Scs at different stages and of the multiple layers of the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression is constantly expanding. Dynamic interactions between different epigenetic mechanisms regulate the appropriate timing of muscle-specific gene expression and influence the lineage fate of Scs. In this review, we report and discuss the recent literature about the epigenetic control of Scs during the myogenic process from activation to proliferation and from their commitment to a muscle cell fate to their differentiation and fusion to myotubes. We describe how the coordinated activities of the histone methyltransferase families Polycomb group(Pc G), which represses the expression of developmentally regulated genes, and Trithorax group, which antagonizes the repressive activity of the Pc G, regulate myogenesis by restricting gene expression in a time-dependent manner during each step of the process. We discuss how histone acetylation and deacetylation occurs in specific loci throughout Sc differentiation to enable the time-dependent transcription of specific genes. Moreover, we describe the multiple roles of micro RNA, an additional epigenetic mechanism, in regulating gene expression in Scs, by repressing or enhancing gene transcription or translation during each step of myogenesis. The importance of these epigenetic pathways in modulating Sc activation and differentiation renders them as promising targets for disease interventions. Understanding the most recent findings regarding the epigenetic mechanisms that regulate Sc behavior is useful from the perspective of pharmacological manipulation for improving muscle regeneration and for promo

This paper describes the development of a plasma process to produce a durable water repellent and anti-stain thin film on synthetic textile, utilized for the upholstery in the automotive field. The coatings were deposited in non equilibrium low pressure plasmas fed with 1H, 1H, 2H-perfluo-ro- 1-decene employing, as substrates, polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate thermo-coupled to polyurethane foam. It was found that the XPS F/c ratio of the deposit was higher than 1.4 and that the treated textile was always very hydrophobic (WcA > 140?) and oil resistant (motor oil cA > 110?), even after wear.

Binary asymmetric nanocrystals （BNcs）, composed of a photoactive TiO2 nanorod joined with a superparamagnetic γ-Fe203 spherical domain, were embedded in polyethylene glycol modified phospholipid micelle and successfully bioconjugated to a suitably designed peptide containing an RGD motif. BNcs represent a relevant multifunctional nanomaterial, owing to the coexistence of two distinct domains in one particle, characterized by high photoactivity and magnetic properties, that is particularly suited for use as a phototherapy and hyperthermia agent as well as a magnetic probe in biological imaging. We selected the RGD motif in order to target integrin expressed on activated endothelial cells and several types of cancer cells. The prepared RGD-peptide/BNc conjugates, comprehensively monitored by using complementary optical and structural techniques, demon- strated a high stability and uniform dispersibility in biological media. The cytotoxicity of the RGD-peptide/BNc conjugates was studied in vitro. The cellular uptake of RGD-peptide conjugates in the cells, assessed by means of two distinct approaches, namely confocal microscopy analysis and emission spectroscopy determination in cell lysates, displayed selectivity of the RGD-peptide-BNc conjugate for the cw]33 integrin. These RGD-peptide-BNc conjugates have a high potential for theranostic treatment of cancer.

Plasma Enhanced-chemical Vapour Deposition of Scuff-Resistant Hydrogenated Amorphous carbon coatings on c100 Steel

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon coatings, deposited by low pressure plasma to minimize the wear of c100 steel components, were optimized and characterized. In order to ensure good adhesion of the films to the steel surface, a thin Ti interlayer was deposited, by magnetron sputtering, before the plasma deposition. The chemical characterization of the deposits was performed by means of RAMAN, XPS, RBS and ERDA analysis, while nanoindentation, nanoscratch and nanowear tests allowed to estimating the tribomechanical properties of the deposits, with the aim of evaluating their scuff-resistance. It was found that the optimized plasma deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon coatings were well adherent to c100 steel and increased more than 70% its surface hardness.
