Visualizing ordered bivariate data on node-link diagrams

Node-link visual representation is a widely used tool that allows decision-makers to see details about a network through the appropriate choice of visual ***,existing visualization methods are not always effective and efficient in representing bivariate graph-based *** study proposes a novel node-link visual model–visual entropy(Vizent)graph–to effectively represent both primary and secondary values,such as uncertainty,on the edges *** performed two user studies to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach in the context of static nodelink *** the first experiment,we evaluated the performance of the Vizent design to determine if it performed equally well or better than existing alternatives in terms of response time and *** static visual encodings that use two visual cues were selected from the literature for comparison:Width-Lightness,saturation-Transparency,and Numerical *** compared the Vizent design to the selected visual encodings on various graphs ranging in complexity from 5 to 25 edges for three different *** participants achieved higher accuracy of their responses using Vizent and Numerical values;however,both Width-Lightness and saturation-Transparency did not show equal performance for all *** results suggest that increasing graph size has no impact on Vizent in terms of response time and *** performance of the Vizent graph was then compared to the Numerical values *** Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that mean response time in seconds was significantly less when the Vizent graphs were presented,while no significant difference in accuracy was *** results from the experiments are encouraging and we believe justify using the Vizent graph as a good alternative to traditional methods for representing bivariate data in the context of node-link diagrams.

Pro-resolving lipid mediator reduces amyloid-β42–induced gene expression in human monocyte–derived microglia

specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators including maresin 1 mediate resolution but the levels of these are reduced in Alzheimer's disease brain, suggesting that they constitute a novel target for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease to prevent/stop inflammation and combat disease pathology. Therefore, it is important to clarify whether they counteract the expression of genes and proteins induced by amyloid-β. With this objective, we analyzed the relevance of human monocyte–derived microglia for in vitro modeling of neuroinflammation and its resolution in the context of Alzheimer's disease and investigated the pro-resolving bioactivity of maresin 1 on amyloid-β42–induced Alzheimer's disease–like inflammation. Analysis of RNA-sequencing data and secreted proteins in supernatants from the monocyte-derived microglia showed that the monocyte-derived microglia resembled Alzheimer's disease–like neuroinflammation in human brain microglia after incubation with amyloid-β42. Maresin 1 restored homeostasis by down-regulating inflammatory pathway related gene expression induced by amyloid-β42 in monocyte-derived microglia, protection of maresin 1 against the effects of amyloid-β42 is mediated by a re-balancing of inflammatory transcriptional networks in which modulation of gene transcription in the nuclear factor-kappa B pathway plays a major part. We pinpointed molecular targets that are associated with both neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease and therapeutic targets by maresin 1. In conclusion, monocyte-derived microglia represent a relevant in vitro microglial model for studies on Alzheimer's disease-like inflammation and drug response for individual patients. Maresin 1 ameliorates amyloid-β42–induced changes in several genes of importance in Alzheimer's disease, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease.

Brachioradialis tendon transfer and palmaris longus tendon graft for thumb avulsion:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Thumb replantation following complete traumatic avulsion requires complex techniques to restore function,especially in cases of avulsion at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint(MCP I)and avulsion of the flexor pollicis longus(FPL)at the musculotendinous *** treatments include direct tendon suture or tendon transfer,most commonly from the ring *** optimize function and avoid donor finger complications,we performed thumb replantation with flexion restoration using brachioradialis(BR)tendon transfer with palmaris longus(PL)tendon *** sUMMARY A 20-year-old left-handed male was admitted for a complete traumatic left thumb amputation following an accident while sliding from the top of a *** patient presented with skin and bone avulsion at the MCP I,avulsion of the FPL tendon at the musculotendinous junction(zone 5),avulsion of the extensor pollicis longus tendon(zone T3),and avulsion of the thumb’s collateral arteries and *** patient was treated with two stage thumb *** first intervention consisted of thumb replantation with MCP I arthrodesis,resection of avulsed FPL tendon and implantation of a silicone tendon *** second intervention consisted of PL tendon graft and BR tendon ***-up at 10 months showed good outcomes with active interphalangeal flexion of 70°,grip strength of 45 kg,key pinch strength of 15 kg and two-point discrimination threshold of 4 *** Flexion restoration after complete thumb amputation with FPL avulsion at the musculotendinous junction can be achieved using BR tendon transfer with PL tendon graft.

Today, the act of purchase is more and more irrational. Customers’ choices are based on emotional and multisensorial features, particularly on touch, which is the most emotional sense. Then it is essential in the design process to work on shapes, materials, textures to make users living pleasant experiences in all contact areas of the product. It’s also essential to consider the dynamic aspect of touch to follow the body and generate pleasant tactile effects. Finally, how can we introduce touch in the design process considering companies’ know-how, culture and subjectivity of each actor of new product creation?

A novel framework to intercept GPs-denied,bomb-carrying,nonmilitary,kamikaze drones:Towards protecting critical infrastructures

Protection of urban critical infrastructures(CIs)from GPs-denied,bomb-carrying kamikaze drones(G-BKDs)is very *** approaches based on drone jamming,spoofing,communication interruption and hijacking cannot be applied in the case under examination,since G-B-KDs are *** the other hand,drone capturing schemes and electromagnetic pulse(EMP)weapons seem to be ***,again,existing approaches present various limitations,while most of them do not examine the case of *** paper,focuses on the aforementioned under-researched field,where the G-B-KD is confronted by two defensive *** first neutralizes and captures the kamikaze drone,while the second captures the *** defensive drones are equipped with a net-gun and an innovative algorithm,which,among others,estimates the locations of interception,using a real-world trajectory ***,one of the defensive drones is also equipped with an EMP weapon to damage the electronics equipment of the kamikaze drone and reduce the capturing time and the overall *** simulated experiments and comparisons to state-of-art methods,reveal the advantages and limitations of the proposed *** specifically,compared to state-of-art,the proposed approach improves:(a)time to neutralize the target by at least 6.89%,(b)maximum number of missions by at least 1.27%and(c)total cost by at least 5.15%.

In this paper the electrochemical properties of some platinum-based nanoalloys are *** revision is centered on electrocatalytic materials generated via the carbonyl chemical route(CCR).In considering the effects of segregation in these bimetals,the reaction of the hydrogen oxidation(HOR)and oxygen reduction(ORR)in the alkaline medium was *** reaction kinetics of these electrochemical processes in the alkaline electrolyte is still a *** the design of high-performance platinum-based electrocatalysts,it is of importance to know that the kinetics of HOR and ORR also depends on the Pt *** electrochemical analysis,based on the study of Pt nanoalloyed surfaces with different Pt-adsorbate interactions,was taken into account.A clear trend in the HOR as well as the ORR activity,in the alkaline electrolyte,was established,revealing that the activity changes in the order Ptsn/Csive effect of the Pt-H_(ad)energy on the HOR kinetics on Pt surfaces apparently depends on the oxophilicity role of the metal to favor M-OH_(ad).The apparent electronic effect is not evident on these materials,except if a strong metal interaction is induced per se with either the carbon or oxide supports,e.g.,the Pt/snO_(2)-C interface in acidic *** effects of Pt-H_(ad)energy on HOR kinetics were found with the oxophilicity of the sp^(2)domains of carbon that serve as anchoring or nucleation sites for platinum *** results were compared with the literature data,and it turns out that this type of strong metal support interaction(sMsI)modification is favorably induced by UV–VIs irradiation and outperforms Pt-Mmaterials to some *** for HOR or ORR,it is shown that non-noble metals not only act as a surrogate metal for Pt utilization by inducing a compressive stress effect between the Pt atoms in the outermost layer but also participat

These are expanded notes from lectures on the geometry of spherical varieties given in sanya. We review some aspects of the geometry of spherical varieties. We first describe the structure of B-orbits. Using the local structure theorems, we describe the Picard group and the group of Weyl divisors and give some necessary conditions for smoothness. We later on consider B-stable curves and describe in details the structure of the Chow group of curves as well as the pairing between curves and divisors. Building on these results we give an explicit B-stable canonical divisor on any spherical variety.
