mediterranean woodland environments are characterised by high spatial and temporal heterogeneity,which means the inhabiting species face a wide variety of selective *** may respond differently to habitat heterogeneity and so distinct eco-evolutionary scenarios may be responsible for the inter-habitat variability in reproductive strategies observed in certain *** inter-forest variability of some reproductive traits in passerines has been examined by comparing forest patches or separated ***,there is still little information regarding how such highly mobile animals adjust their breeding performance across continuous and heterogeneous *** we studied the reproductive performance of a population of Blue Tits(Cyanistes caeruleus) in an area of continuous mediterranean woodland that included two mountain slopes and four different types of forest,ranging from deciduous oak forests to perennial non-oak *** studied the habitat heterogeneity and inter-forest phenotypic variation in terms of reproductive performance and adult and nestling biometry,besides also exploring the effects of ectoparasites on Blue Tit *** were laid earliest in deciduous Pyrenean Oak(Quercus pyrenaica) forests,while clutch size and the number of fledglings were highest in the humid Pyrenean Oak forest,which had the greatest tree coverage and most humid climate,and lowest in the coniferous Scots Pine(Pinus sylvestris) *** were no inter-forest differences in hatching(percentage of nests with at least one egg hatched) and fledging(percentage of nests in which at least one nestling fledged)***,there were no inter-forest differences in adult and nestling biometry,but adults that raised more fledglings had a lower body mass,while males whose females laid larger clutches had smaller *** ectoparasites did not affect Blue Tit reproduction,although Culicoides had a negative impact on nestling body *** results

The Yangtze River has been subject to heavy flooding throughout history, and in recent times severe floods such as those in 1998 have resulted in heavy loss of life and livelihoods. Dams along the river help to manage flood waters, and are important sources of electricity for the region. Being able to forecast high-impact events at long lead times therefore has enormous potential benefit. Recent improvements in seasonal forecasting mean that dynamical climate models can start to be used directly for operational services. The teleconnection from E1 Nifio to Yangtze River basin rainfall meant that the strong E1 Nifio in winter 2015/16 provided a valuable opportunity to test the application of a dynamical forecast system. This paper therefore presents a case study of a real-time seasonal forecast for the Yangtze River basin, building on previous work demonstrating the retrospective skill of such a forecast. A simple forecasting methodology is presented, in which the forecast probabilities are derived from the historical relationship between hindcast and observations. Its performance for 2016 is discussed. The heavy rainfall in the may-June-July period was correctly forecast well in advance. August saw anomalously low rainfall, and the forecasts for the June-July-August period correctly showed closer to average levels. The forecasts contributed to the confidence of decision-makers across the Yangtze River basin. Trials of climate services such as this help to promote appropriate use of seasonal forecasts, and highlight areas for future improvements.

Sampling variability of computer-aided fractal-corrected measures of liver fibrosis in needle biopsy specimens

AIm： TO assess the sampling variability of computeraided, fractal-corrected measures of fibrosis in liver biopsies. mETHODS： Samples were derived from six to eight different parts of livers removed from 12 patients with clinically and histologically proven cirrhosis undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation. Sirius red-stained sections with a thickness of 2 μm were digitized using a computer-aided image analysis system that automatically measures the surface of fibrosis, as well as its outline perimeter, fractal surface and outline dimensions, wrinldedness, and Hurst coefficient. RESULTS： We found a high degree of inter-sample variability in the measurements of the surface [coefficient of variation （CV） = 43% ± 13%] and wrinkledness （CV = 28% ± 9%） of fibrosis, but the inter-sample variability of Hurst＇s exponent was low （CV = 14% ± 2%）. CONCLUSION： This study suggests that Hurst＇s exponent might be used in clinical practice as the best histological estimate of fibrosis in the whole organ, and evidences the fact that biopsy sections, which are fundamental for the qualitative diagnosis of chronic hepatitis, play a key role in the quantitative estimate of architectural changes in liver tissue.

新西兰2016年凯库拉m_W7.8地震地表破裂带分布在1个长约170km、宽35km的范围内,总体呈NE-SW走向,至少有12条断裂产生了m量级的地表位错,跨过了2个活动方式与活动强度存在明显差异的地震构造区。地震地表断裂大致可分为NE—NEE向和NNW—近SN向2组,NE—NEE向断裂之间的贯通性差,最大相隔距离为25~30km,即使首尾相连,走向上也有约30°的差异,运动性质以右旋走滑为主,最大位错量10~12m;NNW—近SN向断裂近于平行分布,相距可达40~50km,以逆断裂活动性质为主,最大垂直位错量5~6m。走滑类地表破裂带的组合特征非常复杂,主要表现为3种形式:雁列、分叉和平行分布。其中,雁列地表破裂(段)既可以表现为数m至数十m尺度上的张剪性破裂与鼓包、挤压剪切破裂组合,也可表现为百余m长的左阶斜列张剪性破裂组合;地表破裂段之间阶区规模差异明显,可以是数十m、数百m到数km不等。平行的地表破裂(段)可以相距数m、数十m至数km。凯库拉地震地表破裂带对已知活动断裂分布格局的突破也是1种比较显著的特点,既可以是在原先认为不活动的断裂上或没有活动断裂的位置上产生了地表破裂带,也可以是在走向或横向上突破了先前认识到的活动断裂分布范围。对凯库拉地震地表破裂带发育特征的初步分析结果,对于理解地表活动断裂与深部发震构造之间复杂的对应关系,以及跨活动断裂的抗震设防等问题具有一定的借鉴意义。

Superionics are fascinating materials displaying both solid- and liquid-like characteristics: as solids, they respond elastically to shearstress;as liquids, they display fast-ion diffusion at normal conditions. In addition to such scientific interest, superionics aretechnologically relevant for energy, electronics, and sensing applications. Characterizing and understanding their elastic propertiesis, e.g., urgently needed to address their feasibility as solid-state electrolytes in all-solid-state batteries. However, static approachesto elasticity assume well-defined reference positions around which atoms vibrate, in contrast with the quasi-liquid motion of themobile ions in fast ionic conductors. Here, we derive the elastic tensors of superionics from ensemble fluctuations in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble, exploiting extensive Car-Parrinello simulations. We apply this approach to paradigmatic Li-ion conductors,and complement with a block analysis to compute statistical errors. Static approaches sampled over the trajectories oftenoverestimate the response, highlighting the importance of a dynamical treatment in determining elastic tensors in superionics.

Plants contain various factors that transiently interact with subunits or intermediates of the thylakoid multiprotein complexes, promoting their stable association and integration. Hence, assembly factors are essential for chloroplast development and the transition from heterotrophic to phototrophic growth. Snowy cotyledon 2 （SCO2） is a DNAJ-like protein involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis and interacts with the light-harvesting chlorophyll-binding protein LHCBI. In Arabidopsis thaliana, SCO2 function was previ- ously reported to be restricted to cotyledons. Here we show that disruption of SC02 in Lotus japonicus results not only in paler cotyledons but also in variegated true leaves. Furthermore, smaller and pale- green true leaves can also be observed in A. thaliana sco2 （atsco2） mutants under short-day conditions. In both species, SCO2 is required for proper accumulation of PSlI-LHCll complexes. In contrast to other variegated mutants, inhibition of chloroplastic translation strongly affects L. japonicus sco2 mutant devel- opment and fails to suppress their variegated phenotype. moreover, inactivation of the suppressor of variegation AtClpR1 in the atsco2 background results in an additive double-mutant phenotype with variegated true leaves. Taken together, our results indicate that SCO2 plays a distinct role in PSll assembly or repair and constitutes a novel factor involved in leaf variegation.

The basic reproduction number of an infectious agent is the average number of infections one case can generate over the course of the infectious period,in a naïve,uninfected *** is well-known that the estimation of this number may vary due to several methodological issues,including different assumptions and choice of parameters,utilized models,used datasets and estimation *** the spreading of the novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV)infection,the reproduction number has been found to vary,reflecting the dynamics of transmission of the coronavirus outbreak as well as the case reporting *** to significant variations in the control strategies,which have been changing over time,and thanks to the introduction of detection technologies that have been rapidly improved,enabling to shorten the time from infection/symptoms onset to diagnosis,leading to faster confirmation of the new coronavirus cases,our previous estimations on the transmission risk of the 2019-nCoV need to be *** using time-dependent contact and diagnose rates,we refit our previously proposed dynamics transmission model to the data available until January 29th,2020 and re-estimated the effective daily reproduction ratio that better quantifies the evolution of the *** estimated when the effective daily reproduction ratio has fallen below 1 and when the epidemics will *** updated findings suggest that the best measure is persistent and strict *** epidemics will continue to grow,and can peak soon with the peak time depending highly on the public health interventions practically implemented.
