Throughout history, design values have always underlined a given architectural style. The manner architects and architectural critics distinguish between them varies from that of the public. In fact a style welt perceived by civil society was read as pathological by architectural academia. This paper examines the values and perceptions of contemporary architecture by architects and civil society. Through qualitative methodology, a project by each of the following leading contemporary architects - Renzo Piano, Norman Foster and Rem Koolhaas - was analyzed. The selected designs, all commissioned not more than a decade ago, vary in locations from Malta to Lebanon to India. The study concludes that design values and perceptions of architecture as read by members of the architectural profession do not tally with those of the public. The emphasis by architects is on the aesthetic whilst non-architects focus on the utilitarian dimension. Furthermore, the rhetorical language which architects use is not read as such by the public. The assessment of the public is based on the existential reality which they experience. The perception of civil society matters; it is at the core of architectural design values.

Gas market in Europe is experiencing a radical change for different reasons, partially determined and accelerated by economic downturn of the last period. In the past few years, many European countries adopted energy policies largely based on the utilization of natural gas. In fact, a sharp increase of the demand was observed and, at the same time, a lot of infrastructures were developed to assure the necessary supply. In the last few years, due to the economic downturn, natural gas demand decreased, causing a consistent oversupply on the market, which altered the consolidated dynamics of the sector. Under- standing the changes currently under development in the European gas market is of paramount importance in order to design future strategies for the sector; in particular, it is necessary to understand if the present situation will cause a reshaping of the sector.

The role of the Sun in climate change is hotly *** studies suggest its impact is significant,while others suggest it is *** Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)supports the latter view and suggests that nearly 100%of the observed surface warming from 1850–1900 to 2020 is due to anthropogenic ***,the IPCC’s conclusions are based solely on computer simulations made with global climate models(GCMs)forced with a total solar irradiance(TSI)record showing a low multi-decadal and secular *** same models also assume that the Sun affects the climate system only through radiative forcing–such as TSI–even though the climate could also be affected by other solar *** this paper I propose three“balanced”multi-proxy models of total solar activity(TSA)that consider all main solar proxies proposed in scientific *** optimal signature on global and sea surface temperature records is assessed together with those produced by the anthropogenic and volcanic radiative forcing functions adopted by the CMIP6 *** is done by using a basic energy balance model calibrated with a differential multi-linear regression methodology,which allows the climate system to respond to the solar input differently than to radiative forcings alone,and to evaluate the climate’s characteristic time-response as *** proposed methodology reproduces the results of the CMIP6 GCMs when their original forcing functions are applied under similar physical conditions,indicating that,in such a scenario,the likely range of the equilibrium climate sensitivity(ECS)could be 1.4℃to 2.8℃,with a mean of 2.1℃(using the HadCRUT5 temperature record),which is compatible with the low-ECS CMIP6 GCM ***,if the proposed solar records are used as TSA proxies and the climatic sensitivity to them is allowed to differ from the climatic sensitivity to radiative forcings,a much greater solar impact on climate change is found,along with a significant

Effect of template shape on metal nanoimprinting:a dislocation dynamics study

Dislocation dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the effect of template shape on the nanoimprinting of metal layers. To this end, metal thin films are imprinted by a rigid template made of an array of equispaced indenters of various shapes, i.e., rectangular, wedge, and circular. The geometry of the indenters is chosen such that the contact area is approximately the same at the final imprinting depth. Results show that, for all template shapes, the final patterns strongly depend on the dislocation activity, and that each imprint differs from the neighboring ones. Large material pile ups appear between the imprints, such that polishing of the metal layer is suggested for application of the patterns in electronics. Rectangular indenters require the lowest imprinting force and achieve the deepest retained imprints.

The aim of this work is to optimize iron nanoparticle production in stirred tank reactors equipped with two classical impellers:Rushton and four-pitched blade turbines,which are largely used in batch industrial synthesis and efficient *** main operative parameters of nanoparticle synthesis are the precursor initial concentration,reducing agent/precursor molar ratio,impeller-tank clearance,and impeller rotational *** parameters were varied during the synthesis to find the optimal operating values based on the Fe(0)(%)production,zeta potential,particle size distribution,and powder X-ray diffraction pattern *** found that the optimal operating conditions for nanoparticle production were an impeller velocity of 1500 rpm,initial iron precursor concentration of 20 mM,molar ratio of reducing agent to iron precursor of 3 mol/mol,and impeller clearance of 0.25 and 0.4 times the vessel diameter for Rushton and four-pitched blade impellers,*** these conditions achieved a total conversion of 0.94-0.98 and yielded a product with a unimodal size distribution and average diameters in the range 30-50 *** computational fluid dynamics results agreed with the expectations,and the obtained mixing Damkohler numbers show that the process is mixed controlled.

Bariatric surgery and diabetes remission: Sleeve gastrectomy or mini-gastric bypass?

AIM:To investigate the weight loss and glycemic control status[blood glucose,hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)and hypoglycaemic treatment].METHODS:The primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes is obesity,and 90%of all patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or *** a remarkable effect of bariatric surgery is the profound and durable resolution of type 2 diabetes clinical manifestations,little is known about the difference among various weight loss surgical procedures on diabetes *** from patients referred during a 3-year period(from January2009 to December 2011)to the University of Naples"FedericoⅡ"diagnosed with obesity and diabetes were retrieved from a prospective *** patients were split into two groups according to the surgical intervention performed[sleeve gastrectomy(SG)and mini-gastric bypass(MGB)].Weight loss and glycemic control status(blood glucose,HbA1c and hypoglycaemic treatment)were ***:A total of 53 subjects who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or mini-gastric bypass for obesity and diabetes were screened for the inclusion in this *** these,4 subjects were excluded because of surgical complications,7 subjects were omitted because young surgeons conducted the operations and 11 subjects were removed because of the lack of *** obese patients were recruited for this study.A total of 15 subjects underwent SG(48.4%),and 16underwent MGB(51.6%).After adjusting for various clinical and demographic characteristics in a multivariate logistic regression analysis,high hemoglobin A1c was determined to be a negative predictor of diabetes remission at 12 mo(OR=0.366,95%CI:0.152-0.884).Using the same regression model,MGB showed a clear trend toward higher diabetes remission rates relative to SG(OR=3.780,95%CI:0.961-14.872).CONCLUSION:Although our results are encouraging regarding the effectiveness of mini-gastric bypass on diabetes remission,further studies are needed to provide definitive conclusions in selecting th

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is a group of chronic multifactorial disorders. According to a recent study,the number of IBD association loci is increased to 201,of which 37 and 27 loci contribute specifically to the development of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis respectively. Some IBD associated genes are involved in innate immunity,in the autophagy and in the inflammatory response such as NOD2,ATG16L1 and IL23 R,while other are implicated in immune mediated disease(STAT3) and in susceptibility to mycobacterium infection(IL12B). In case of early onset of IBD(VEO-IBD) within the 6th year of age,the disease may be caused by mutations in genes responsible for severe monogenic disorders such as the primary immunodeficiency diseases. In this review we discuss how these monogenic disorders through different immune mechanisms can similarly be responsible of VEO-IBD phenotype. Moreover we would highlight how the identification of pathogenic genes by Next Generation Sequencing technologies can allow to obtain a rapid diagnosis and to apply specific therapies.
