Hear no evil： The effect of auditory warning signals on avian innate avoidance, learned avoidance and memory

Many aposematic insect species advertise their toxicity to potential predators using olfactory and auditory signals, in addition to visual signals, to produce a multimodal warning display. The olfactory signals in these displays may have interesting effects, such as eliciting innate avoidance against novel colored prey, or improving learning and memory of defended prey. However, little is known about the effects of such ancillary signals when they are auditory rather than olfactory. The few studies that have investigated this question have provided conflicting results. The current study sought to clarify and extend understanding of the effects of prey auditory signals on avian predator responses. The domestic chick Gallus gallus domesticus was used as a model avian predator to examine how the defensive buzzing sound of a bumblebee Bombus terrestris affected the chick＇s innate avoidance behavior, and the learning and memory of prey avoidance. The results demonstrate that the buzzing sound had no effect on the predator＇s responses to unpalatable aposematically colored crumbs, suggesting that the agitated buzzing of B. terrestris may provide no additional protection from avian predators .

Breast cancer(BC)is the most common malignant tumor and one of the top causes of cancer-related death worldwide(Sung et al.,2021).The recent advances in early tumor diagnosis coupled with more effective treatment strategies resulted in a steady increase of long-term survivors(Nardin et al.,2020;Invernizzi et al.,2022).These improved survival rates led to a significantly higher incidence of disabling complications related to breast cancer and/or its treatment(Invernizzi et al.,2020a;D’Egidio et al.,2017;Zhong et al.,2020).

BACKGROUND Fluoropyrimidines are metabolized in the liver by the enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase(DPD),encoded by the DPYD *** 7%of the European population is a carrier of DPYD gene polymorphisms associated with reduced DPD enzyme *** To assess the prevalence of DPYD polymorphisms and their impact on fluoropyrimidine tolerability in Italian patients with gastrointestinal *** A total of 300 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy and treated with a fluoropyrimidine-based regimen were included in the analysis and divided into two cohorts:(1)149 patients who started fluoropyrimidines after DPYD testing;and(2)151 patients treated without DPYD *** the patients in cohort A,15%tested only the DPYD2A polymorphism,19%tested four polymorphisms(DPYD2A,HapB3,c.2846A>T,and DPYD13),and 66%tested five polymorphisms including *** Overall,14.8%of patients were found to be carriers of a DPYD variant,the most common being DPYD6(12.1%).Patients in cohort A reported≥G3 toxicities(P=0.00098),particularly fewer nonhematological toxicities(P=0.0028)compared with cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant difference between the two cohorts in hematological toxicities(P=0.6944).Significantly fewer chemotherapy dose reductions(P=0.00002)were observed in cohort A compared to cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant differences in chemotherapy *** Although this study had a limited sample size,it provides additional information on the prevalence of DPYD polymorphisms in the Italian population and highlights the role of pharmacogenetic testing to prevent severe toxicity.

Policy makers should consider improving access to treatments normally considered outside of healthcare in the west, particularly given the recent WHO strategy. However, research on integrating traditional and complementary medicines(T&CM) into conventional health care is lacking. T& CM approaches, may provide a cost effective option given the increase in chronic diseases with evidence of effectiveness of T& CM being key if such approaches are to be offered as part of integrative patient care, in most countries, an integrated healthcare approach is unavailable to patients. Evidence based clinical guidelines on T& CM should influence care provision. However evidence that is available may not even be cited. Poor use of evidence may possibly be a reflection of lack of knowledge and/or biases of guideline developers but additionally stakeholders vary in their perceived need for evidence to implement health policy change. Journal editors should focus on publishing high quality manuscripts, with clear rationales, design and reporting frameworks. Researchers should consider carrying out careful feasibility studies prior to conducting trials taking into account the UK Medical Research Council's framework on complex interventions. Examples of feasibility studies highlighting their importance for trial design are given in this paper. If preparation for more definitive studies is conducted this will in turn improve the quality of research being designed, executed and published and subsequently encourage the inclusion of evidence by guideline developers. Robust evidence is necessary in order to inform governments' health policies providing appropriate T&CM interventions which can ultimately help to provide best patient care.

With the advent of new spectroscopic surveys from ground and space,observing up to hundreds of millions of galaxies,spectra classification will become overwhelming for standard analysis *** prepare for this challenge,we introduce a family of deep learning tools to classify features in one-dimensional *** the first application of these Galaxy Spectra neural Networks(Ga SNets),we focus on tools specialized in identifying emission lines from strongly lensed star-forming galaxies in the e BOSS *** first discuss the training and testing of these networks and define a threshold probability,PL,of 95%for the high-quality event ***,using a previous set of spectroscopically selected strong lenses from e BOSS,confirmed with the Hubble Space Telescope(HST),we estimate a completeness of~80%as the fraction of lenses recovered above the adopted *** finally apply the Ga SNets to~1.3M eBOSS spectra to collect the first list of~430 new high-quality candidates identified with deep learning from spectroscopy and visually graded as highly probable real events.A preliminary check against ground-based observations tentatively shows that this sample has a confirmation rate of 38%,in line with previous samples selected with standard(no deep learning)classification tools and confirmed by the *** first test shows that machine learning can be efficiently extended to feature recognition in the wavelength space,which will be crucial for future surveys like 4MOST,DESI,Euclid,and the China Space Station Telescope.

AIM: To test the correlation between lymphocyte-tomonocyte ratio(LMR) and survival after radiofrequency ablation(RFA) for colorectal liver metastasis(CLMs). METHODS: From July 2003 to Feb 2012, 127 consecutive patients with 193 histologically-proven unresectable CLMs were treated with percutaneous RFA at the University of Foggia. All patients had undergone primary colorectal tumor resection before RFA and received systemic chemotherapy. LMR was calculated by dividing lymphocyte count by monocyte count assessed at baseline. Treatment-related toxicity was defined as any adverse events occurred within 4 wk after the procedure. Overall survival(OS) and time to recurrence(TTR) were estimated from the date of RFA by Kaplan-Meier with plots and median(95%CI). The inferential analysis for time to event data was conducted using the Cox univariate and multivariate regression model to estimate hazard ratios(HR) and 95%CI. Statistically significant variables from the univariate Cox analysis were considered for the multivariate ***: Median age was 66 years(range 38-88) and patients were prevalently male(69.2%). Median LMR was 4.38%(0.79-88) whereas median number of nodules was 2(1-3) with a median maximum diameter of 27 mm(10-45). Median OS was 38 mo(34-53) and survival rate(SR) was 89.4%, 40.4% and 33.3% at 1, 4 and 5 years respectively in the whole cohort. Running log-rank test analysis found 3.96% as the most significant prognostic cut-off point for LMR and stratifying the study population by this LMR value median OS resulted 55 mo(37-69) in patients with LMR > 3.96% and 34(26-39) mo in patients with LMR ≤ 3.96%(HR = 0.53, 0.34-0.85, P = 0.007). Nodule size and LMR were the only significant predictors for OS in multivariate analysis. Median TTR was 29 mo(22-35) with a recurrence-free survival(RFS) rate of 72.6%, 32.1% and 21.8% at 1, 4 and 5 years, respectively in the whole study group.
