Skillful Seasonal Forecasts of Summer Surface Air Temperature in Western China by Global Seasonal Forecast System Version 5

Variations of surface air temperature （SAT） are key in affecting the hydrological cycle, ecosystems and agriculture in western China in summer. This study assesses the seasonal forecast skill and reliability of SAT in western China, using the GloSea5 operational forecast system from the UK Met Office. Useful predictions are demonstrated, with considerable skill over most regions of western China. The temporal correlation coefficients of SAT between model predictions and observations axe larger than 0.6, in both northwestern China and the Tibetan Plateau. There are two important sources of skill for these predictions in western China： interannual variation of SST in the western Pacific and the SST trend in the tropical Pacific. The tropical SST change in the recent two decades, with a warming in the western Pacific and cooling in the eastern Pacific, which is reproduced well by the forecast system, provides a large contribution to the skill of SAT in northwestern China. Additionally, the interannual variation of SST in the western Pacific gives rise to the reliable prediction of SAT around the Tibetan Plateau. It modulates convection around the Maritime Continent and further modulates the variation of SAT on the Tibetan Plateau via the surrounding circulation. This process is evident irrespective of detrending both in observations and the model predictions, and acts as a source of skill in predictions for the Tibetan Plateau. The predictability and reliability demonstrated in this study is potentially useful for climate services providing early warning of extreme climate events and could imply useful economic benefits.

Rainfall forecasts for the summer monsoon season in the Yangtze River basin(YRB) allow decision-makers to plan for possible flooding, which can affect the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. A trial climate service was developed in 2016, producing a prototype seasonal forecast product for use by stakeholders in the region, based on rainfall forecasts directly from a dynamical model. Here, we describe an improved service based on a simple statistical downscaling approach. Through using dynamical forecast of an East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) index, seasonal mean rainfall for the upper and middle/lower reaches of YRB can be forecast separately by use of the statistical downscaling, with significant skills for lead times of up to at least three months. The skill in different sub-basin regions of YRB varies with the target season. The rainfall forecast skill in the middle/lower reaches of YRB is significant in May–June–July(MJJ), and the forecast skill for rainfall in the upper reaches of YRB is significant in June–July–August(JJA). The mean rainfall for the basin as a whole can be skillfully forecast in both MJJ and JJA. The forecasts issued in 2019 gave good guidance for the enhanced rainfall in the MJJ period and the near-average conditions in JJA. Initial feedback from users in the basin suggests that the improved forecasts better meet their needs and will enable more robust decision-making.

Emerging insights into the function of very long chain fatty acids at cerebellar synapses

Very long chain-saturated and-polyunsaturated fatty acids(VLC-SFA and VLC-PUFA, respectively) are a functionally important class of fatty acids containing 28 carbons or more in their acyl chain. They are synthesized by the elongation of very long fatty acids-4(ELOVL4) enzyme, expressed mainly in the brain, retina, skin, testes, and meibomian gland, where these fatty acids are found(Agbaga et al., 2008). Further, these organs exhibit tissuespecific VLC-PUFA and VLC-SFA biosynthesis and incorporation into complex lipids for specific functions. In the brain, skin, and Meibomian glands, the ELOVL4 mainly makes VLC-SFA, which are incorporated into complex sphingolipids. In the retina, the ELOVL4 makes VLC-PUFA that are incorporated into phosphatidylcholine, that are critical for visual function, while in testes and sperm, the VLC-PUFA are incorporated into sphingolipids that are critical for fertility(Yeboah et al., 2021).

Optical resonators are a powerful platform to control the spontaneous emission dynamics of excitons in solidstate nanostructures. We study a MoSe2-WSe2heterostructure that is integrated in a cryogenic open optical microcavity to gain insights into fundamental optical properties of the emergent interlayer excitons. First, we utilize a low-quality-factor planar open cavity and investigate the modification of the excitonic lifetime as on-and offresonance conditions are met with consecutive longitudinal modes.

Site index determination using a time series of airborne laser scanning data

Site index (SI) is determined from the top height development and is a proxy for forest productivity, defined as the expected top height for a given species at a certain index age. In Norway, an index age of 40 years is used. By using bi-temporal airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, SI can be determined using models estimated from SI observed on field plots (the direct approach) or from predicted top heights at two points in time (the height differential approach). Time series of ALS data may enhance SI determination compared to conventional methods used in operational forest inventory by providing more detailed information about the top height development. We used longitudinal data comprising spatially consistent field and ALS data collected from training plots in 1999, 2010, and 2022 to determine SI using the direct and height differential approaches using all combinations of years and performed an external validation. We also evaluated the use of data assimilation. Values of root mean square error obtained from external validation were in the ranges of 16.3%-21.4% and 12.8%-20.6% of the mean field- registered SI for the direct approach and the height differential approach, respectively. There were no statistically significant effects of time series length or the number of points in time on the obtained accuracies. Data assimilation did not result in any substantial improvement in the obtained accuracies. Although a time series of ALS data did not yield greater accuracies compared to using only two points in time, a larger proportion of the study area could be used in ALS-based determination of SI when a time series was available. This was because areas that were unsuitable for SI determination between two points in time could be subject to SI determination based on data from another part of the time series.

Feasibility study on the suitability of dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment of desert sand for concrete production purposes

Due to the continuously increasing building and construction industry,sand has become one of the most questioned raw materials ***,the available amount of sand suitable for concrete production is orders of magnitude lower that the demand and *** though desert sand is sufficiently available,it is not usable for realizing stable concrete due to its surface *** this background,the suitability of energy-efficient‘cold'dielectric barrier discharge plasma operated at atmospheric pressure for improving the properties of concrete produced from desert sand was investigated in this *** is shown that such plasma treatment allows for a certain roughening and re-shaping of sand *** a result,the mass flow of treated sand is decreased due to an improved wedging of sand *** leads to a certain increase in compressive strength of concrete *** though this increase is marginal,the suitability of the applied type of plasma for modification of the geometry and surface chemistry of sand grains was proven,showing its basic potential for the treatment and preconditioning of sand used for concrete,mortar or plastering.
