This work investigated the application of several fluorescence excitation–emission matrix analysis methods as natural organic matter（NOM） indicators for use in predicting the formation of trihalomethanes（THMs） and haloacetic acids（HAAs）. Waters from four different sources（two rivers and two lakes） were subjected to jar testing followed by 24 hr disinfection by-product formation tests using chlorine. NOM was quantified using three common measures： dissolved organic carbon, ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm, and specific ultraviolet absorbance as well as by principal component analysis, peak picking,and parallel factor analysis of fluorescence spectra. Based on multi-linear modeling of THMs and HAAs, principle component（PC） scores resulted in the lowest mean squared prediction error of cross-folded test sets（THMs： 43.7（μg/l）^2, HAAs： 233.3（μg/l）^2）. Inclusion of principle components representative of protein-like material significantly decreased prediction error for both THMs and HAAs. Parallel factor analysis did not identify a protein-like component and resulted in prediction errors similar to traditional NOM surrogates as well as fluorescence peak picking. These results support the value of fluorescence excitation–emission matrix–principal component analysis as a suitable NOM indicator in predicting the formation of THMs and HAAs for the water sources studied.

Hydrocarbon contamination may affect the soil microbial community, in terms of both diversity and function. A laboratory experiment was set-up, with a semi-arid control soil and the same soil but artificially contaminated with diesel oil, to follow changes in the dominant species of the microbial community in the hydrocarbon-polluted soil via proteomics. Analysis of the proteins extracted from enriched cultures growing in luria-Bertani （lB） media showed a change in the microbial community. The majority of the proteins were related to gIycolysis pathways, structural or protein synthesis. The results showed a relative increase in the complexity of the soil microbial community with hydrocarbon contamination, especially after 15 days of incubation. Species such as Ralstonia solanacearum, Synechococcus elongatus and different Clostridium sp. were adapted to contamination, not appearing in the control soil, although Bacillus sp. dominated the growing in lB in any of the treatments. We conclude that the identification of microbial species in soil extracts by culture-dependent proteomics is able to partially explain the changes in the diversity of the soil microbial community in hydrocarbon polluted semi-arid soils, but this information is much more limited than that provided by molecular methods.

Zeolitites (ZTs) are rocks containing more than 50% of zeolite minerals and are known to be a suitable material for agricultural purposes by improving soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen (N) use efficiency. However, little is known about their effects on soil microbial biomass. This study aimed to evaluate short-term effects of different chabazite-rich ZT (CHAZT) amendments on soil microbial biomass and activity. A silty-clay agricultural soil was amended in three different ways, including the addition of natural (5% and 15%) and NH_4^+-enriched (10%) CHAZT. Soil dissolved organic carbon (C), total dissolved N, NH_4^+, NO_3^-, NO_2^-, microbial biomass C and N, and ergosterol were measured periodically over 16 d in a laboratory incubation. To verify the microbial immobilization of the N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT, a high15N source was used for enriching the mineral to measure the microbial biomass δ15N signature. An increase in the ergosterol content was observed in the soil amended with 5% natural CHAZT. However, no similar result was observed in the soil amended with 15% natural CHAZT, suggesting that the fungal biomass was favored at a lower CHAZT application rate. In the soil amended with NH+ 4-enriched CHAZT, microbial biomass N was related to NO_3^-production over time and inversely related to NH_4^+, suggesting high nitrification process. Isotopic measurements on microbial biomass confirmed immediate assimilation of N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT. These results suggested that the NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT used in this study supplied an immediately available N pool to the microbial biomass.

This study reports the stabilization of the RFe12-type based compounds where part of R and Fe are substituted with Zr and Co and Si, respectively, in order to examine whether these rare-earth-lean materials are suitable for applications as permanent magnets. Structural and magnetic characterization of the family of alloys with the general formula Nd0.4 Zr0.6 Fe10-xCoxSi2(x = 0 -3) and their melt-spun ribbons were carried out using X-ray diffraction and M€ossbauer spectroscopy. The ThMn12-type structure is obtained for all samples as the majority phase with a minority a-Fe(CoSi) phase(less than 5 wt%) as it was estimated by XRD for x = 1 and 2. The Curie temperature increases linearly with Co substitution from 561 K for x = 0 to 712 K for x = 3. The saturation magnetization decreases slightly from 130.5(x =1)to 129.1 A·m2/kg(x=3), while the anisotropy field is following the same trend.

The Alto MoxotóTerrane of the Borborema Province presents a wide exposure of Paleoproterozoic crust,but unlike other continental blocks of South America,its orogenic history is strongly obliterated by late Neoproterozoic *** isotopic and geochemical studies were conducted in mafic-ultramafic(Fazenda Carmo Suite)and granitic-gneissic rocks(Riacho do Navio Suite)within the *** former present zircon U-Pb crystallization ages at ca.2.13 Ga,whereas Sm-Nd data suggests a juvenile origin via melting of early Paleoproterozoic to Archean peridotitic *** data for these rocks are compatible with tholeiitic magmas with some degree of crustal contamination and trace element distribution points to a continental-arc related setting interpreted as remnants of the early stages of *** contrast,the Riacho do Navio Suite was emplaced at ca.2.08 Ga and has highly negativeεNd(t)values indicating crustal *** suite displays calc-alkali to alkali-calcic and ferroan geochemical signatures compatible with Cordilleran *** addition,trace-element distribution as well as discriminant diagrams suggest that the precursor magmas were generated during the later stages of a continental arc or in a syn-collisional *** on our results,we suggest that the studied units might represent missing pieces of a Paleoproterozoic accretionary orogen that formed the crustal framework of the Alto MoxotóTerrane,and that this represents a block associated with assembly of the Nuna/Columbia supercontinent,which is now largely hidden within the Neoproterozoic orogenic belts of West Gondwana.

A systematic study of the magnetic and structural properties dependence on the particle size was *** this,commercial NdFeB powder was separated into five different mean particle sizes using ***,from the original powder,eleven samples were also produced by mechanical milling assisted by surfactant,using various milling times.A total of sixteen samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),vibrating sample magnetometry(VSM),and Mdssbauer spectrometry(MS).The particle sizes of the samples vary from the micrometer to the nanometer *** crystallite size decreases with decreasing particle *** result indicates that the Nd2Fe14B phase is found in all the samples,and the presence of this phase is also corroborated by MS using six sextets for fitting their spectra,with an additional singlet corresponding to the Nd1.1Fe4B4 *** mean hyperfine magnetic field increases with increasing particle size because the magnetic dipolar interaction between the magnetic moment of the particles increases with particle *** the VSM measurements the magnetic energy density(BH)max values were calculated for different particle sizes,and their maximum value of 34.45 MGOe is obtained for the sample with the particle size of 60μm.
