Heterosis and combining ability evaluation for growth traits of blunt snout bream(Megalobrama amblycephala)when crossbreeding three strains

The blunt snout bream(Megalobrama amblycephala)is a major aquaculture species in the Chinese freshwater polyculture *** this study,complete diallel crossing of three strains(i.e.,Liangzi[LZ],Poyang[PY]and Yuni[YN])was used to evaluate the combining ability and heterosis effect of intraspecific crossbreeding on the growth performance(i.e.,body weight,total length,body length,body height,and Fulton’s coefficient of condition).The offspring produced from the three strains were reared in a communal pond for 20 months,and nine microsatellites were used to assess their *** the749 offspring,708(94.53%)could be assigned directly to a single parental *** differences were observed in body weight(BW)among the different combinations,indicating that the combining ability of BW from each strain was significantly *** general combining ability(GCA)of BW from the sire was much higher than that from the *** GCA for the dam and sire of the LZ and YN were the largest and the smallest,*** special combining ability of YN$9 PY#was the largest,and YN$9 PY#showed significantly positive heterosis effects on all F1growth traits,except for Fulton’s condition coefficient(K)(P\0.05).In addition,significant positive linear correlations were found between the mean BW of corresponding progeny and the H E of the parental generation(y=600.7x-29.472,r=0.8651,P=0.0026),H O(y=1206.9x-518.14,r=0.7436,P=0.0216),and the polymorphism information content(y=1021.3x-331.31,r=0.8245,P=0.0063)as determined by a correlative *** findings obtained from the study will be important for future considerations of *** stock improvement programs.

Environmental sampling of volatile organic compounds during the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California

Trace analysis of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) during wildfires is imperative for environmental and health risk assessment. The use of gas sampling devices mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) to chemically sample air during wildfires is of great interest because these devices move freely about their environment, allowing for more representative air samples and the ability to sample areas dangerous or unreachable by humans. This work presents chemical data from air samples obtained in Davis, CA during the most destructive wildfire in California's history-the 2018 Camp Fire – as well as the deployment of our sampling device during a controlled experimental fire while fixed to a UAV. The sampling mechanism was an in-house manufactured micro-gas preconcentrator(μPC) embedded onto a compact battery-operated sampler that was returned to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Compounds commonly observed in wildfires were detected during the Camp Fire using gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC–MS), including BTEX(benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m + p-xylene, and o-xylene), benzaldehyde, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, naphthalene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene and 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene. Concentrations of BTEX were calculated and we observed that benzene and toluene were highest with average concentrations of 4.7 and 15.1 μg/m^(3), respectively. Numerous fire-related compounds including BTEX and aldehydes such as octanal and nonanal were detected upon experimental fire ignition, even at a much smaller sampling time compared to samples taken during the Camp Fire. Analysis of the air samples taken both stationary during the Camp Fire and mobile during an experimental fire show the successful operation of our sampler in a fire environment.

AC loss is one of the greatest obstacles for high‐temperature superconducting(HTS)*** some HTS applications,coated conductors carry non‐sinusoidal ***,it is important to investigate the effect of various waveforms on AC loss in coated *** this work,transport AC loss in a 4 mm‐wide REBCO coated conductor carrying sinusoidal and non‐sinusoidal currents,is numerically *** current amplitudes,the frequency of the transport current,and n‐value are ***‐sinusoidal transport current waveforms studied include square,five types of trapezoidal,and triangular *** results show that,for a given current amplitude,AC loss for the square current waveform is the greatest,that for the triangular waveform is the *** sequence of AC loss in the conductor for different current waveforms coincides with the penetration depth,which implies the penetration depth determines the AC loss of the coated ***,the transport AC loss in the conductor was found to decrease with frequency as f2=n for non‐sinusoidal transport current.

Onset temperature of intrinsic pinning in a REBCO coated conductor from critical current anisotropy

The field‐angle dependence of the critical current in a REBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7) coated conductor has been measured over a fine range of temperatures from 15 K to 80 *** particular sample is demonstrated to have a very low fraction of extrinsic planar defects by its near‐isotropic critical current at 77 *** a representative magnetic field of 3 T we are able to track the emergence of the ab‐plane peak usually associated with intrinsic pinning and quantify its evolution with temperature by fitting to a maximum‐entropy *** are also able to observe the evolution of dip and peak features in the angle dependence of the power‐law index n with decreasing temperature and show that a dip appearing at 65 K is supplanted by a sharper positive peak from 50 *** combination of critical current and power‐law index temperature dependences shows the onset of intrinsic pinning at 50 K.

All‐superconducting rotating machines have the potential for meeting the high power density and high efficiency required for electrical aircraft ***,very high AC loss encountered in superconducting armature windings could hinder their *** MgB_(2) wires are one of the promising candidates for the stator windings,due to their potentially low AC loss properties with small filament size and twist *** the first step,the dependence of critical current and n‐value on magnetic fields and temperatures I_(c)(B,T)and n(B,T),which are basic input parameters for AC loss simulation,needs to be *** this work,we present transport I_(c)measurements in three non‐magnetic multifilamentary MgB_(2) wires(MgB_(2)/Nb/CuNi/CuZn):one large wire with a 0.70 mm diameter and 25 mm twist pitch,and two small wires with a 0.48 mm diameter each and a 10 mm and 30 mm twist pitch respectively.A four‐probe direct current method is used to measure I_(c) of the MgB_(2) wires with variations in temperature(15-35 K)and magnetic field(0-5.5 T).Full I_(c) data for the small wire with 10 mm twist pitch was obtained,and the n‐values were mostly less than *** the I_(c) data for the large wire at low fields was more limited due to heating,the n‐values were higher and could be up to around *** difference is attributed to the different filament *** also found that there is no significant hysteresis in the transport critical current measured by decreasing or increasing magnetic fields due to the non‐magnetic *** non‐hysteretic characteristic is critical for lowering AC loss because the additional losses from magnetic sheaths can be *** the magnetic‐field dependence of critical current density,an empirical expression has been developed that provides suitable extrapolations to lower fields for the large wire.
