Adenocarcinoma arising at ileostomy sites:Two cases and a review of the literature

Total colectomy with ileostomy placement is a treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel disease or familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP). A rare and late complication of this treatment is carcinoma arising at the ileostomy site. We describe two such cases: a 78-year-old male 30 years after subtotal colectomy and ileostomy for FAP, and an 85-year-old male 50 years after colectomy and ileostomy for ulcerative colitis. The long latency period between creation of the ileostomies and development of carcinoma suggests a chronic metaplasia due to an irritating/inflammatory causative factor. Surgical excision of the mass and relocation of the stoma is the mainstay of therapy, with possible benefits from adjuvant chemotherapy. Newly developed lesions at stoma sites should be biopsied to rule out the possibility of this rare ileostomy complication.

马来半岛位于低纬热带地区,厄尔尼诺-南方涛动(El Nino-Southern Oscillation,ENSO)如何影响该区域的气候,尤其是降水仍然存在争议。本文以马来半岛东北部登嘉楼州Setiu潟湖钻孔NTT-3为研究对象,通过分析粒度、总有机碳及总氮含量、C/N比值和XRF岩心扫描等,探讨该钻孔的沉积环境变化及其对ENSO的响应。研究结果显示,钻孔记录中自1970年前后(84 cm处)出现两种不同的变化趋势。1970年之前钻孔下部沉积物粒度、有机和无机地球化学特征趋势波动明显,沉积速率较低。而1970年以来,潟湖沉积环境总体稳定,沉积物中的有机组分主要来自红树林,同时伴有河流输入的淡水浮游植物的贡献。频谱分析结果显示1970年以来钻孔上部存在明显的ENSO周期变化。强厄尔尼诺现象基本对应低Zr/Rb比值和低Zr/Ti比值,而强拉尼娜(la Nina)现象基本对应高Zr/Rb比值和高Zr/Ti比值。该结论不仅支持了现代观测对马来半岛东部沿海地区气候变化的认识,同时也在地质记录中发现了ENSO变化的直接证据,对全面认识和理解ENSO对亚洲气候变化的影响、区域陆海相互作用过程和环境响应等方面具有重要现实意义。

Arabidopsis methylation elevated mutant 1(mem1)mutants have elevated levels of global DNA methylation. In this study, such mutant alleles showed increased sensitivity to methyl methanesulfonate(MMS). In mem1 mutants, an assortment of genes engaged in DNA damage response(DDR), especially DNA-repair-associated genes, were largely upregulated without MMS treatment, suggestive of activation of the DDR pathway in them. Following MMS treatment, expression levels of multiple DNArepair-associated genes in mem1 mutants were generally lower than in Col-0 plants, whichaccounted for the MMS-sensitive phenotype of the mem1 mutants. A group of DNA methylation pathway genes were upregulated in mem1 mutants under non-MMS-treated conditions, causing elevated global DNA methylation, especially in RNAdirected DNA methylation(Rd DM)-targeted ***, MEM1 seemed to help ATAXIATElaNGIECTASIA MUTATED(ATM) and/or SUPPRESSOR OF gamma RESPONSE 1(SOG1) to fully activate/suppress transcription of a subset of genes regulated simultaneously by MEM1 and ATM and/or SOG1, because expression of such genes decreased/increased consistently in mem1 and atm and/or sog1 mutants, but the decreases/increases in the mem1 mutants were not as dramatic as in the atm and/or sog1 mutants. Thus, our studies reveals roles of MEM1 in safeguarding genome, and interrelationships among DNA damage, activation of DDR, DNA methylation/demethylation, and DNA repair.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths *** the recent advances in cancer therapies,the 5-year survival of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)patients hovers around 20%.Inherent and acquired resistance to therapies(including radiation,chemotherapies,targeted drugs,and combination therapies)has become a significant obstacle in the successful treatment of NSCLC.c-Myc,one of the critical oncoproteins,has been shown to be heavily associated with the malignant cancer phenotype,including rapid proliferation,metastasis,and chemoresistance across multiple cancer *** c-Myc proto-oncogene is amplified in small cell lung cancers(SCLCs)and overexpressed in over 50%of NSCLCs.c-Myc is known to actively regulate the tran-scription of cancer stemness genes that are recognized as major contributors to tumor progression and therapeutic resistance;thus,targeting c-Myc either directly or indirectly in mitigation of the cancer stemness phenotype be-comes a promising approach for development of a new strategy against drug resistant lung *** review will summarize what is currently known about the mechanisms underlying c-Myc regulation of cancer stemness and its involvement in drug resistance and offer an overview on the current progress and future prospects in therapeutically targeting c-Myc in both SCLC and NSCLC.

Massif anorthosites form when basaltic magma differentiates in crustal magma chambers to form lowdensity plagioclase and a residual liquid whose density was greater than that of enclosing crustal rocks. The plagioclase and minor pyroxene crystallized in-situ on the floor of the magma chamber to produce the anorthosite complex,and the residual liquid migrated downwards,eventually to solidify as dense Fe-rich cumulates some of which were removed to the *** movements were facilitated by high temperatures in Proterozoic continental crust,thus explaining the restriction of large anorthosite massifs to this period in Earth history.

Round Top Mountain in Hudspeth County, west Texas, USA is a surface-exposed rhyolite intrusion enriched in Y and heavy rare earth elements （HREEs）, as well as Nb, Ta, Be, Li, F, Sn, Rb, Th, and U. The massive tonnage, estimated at well over 1 billion tons, of the deposit makes it a target for recovery of valuable yttrium and HREEs （YHREEs）, and possibly other scarce ele-ments. Because of the extremely fine grain size of the mineralized rhyolite matrix, it has not been clear which minerals host the YHREEs and in what proportions. REE-bearing minerals reported in the deposit included bastn？site-Ce, Y-bearing fluorite, xeno-time-Y, zircon, aeschynite-Ce, a Ca-Th-Pb fluoride, and possibly ancylite-la and cerianite-Ce. Extended X-ray absorption fine struc-ture （EXAFS） indicated that virtually all of the yttrium, a proxy for the HREEs, resided in a coordination in the fluorite-type crystal structure, rather than those in the structures of bastn？site-Ce and xenotime-Y. The YREE grade of the Round Top deposit was just over 0.05%, with 72%of this consisting of YHREEs. This grade was in the range of the South China ionic clay deposits that supply essentially all of the world’s YHREEs. Because the host Y-bearing fluorite is soluble in dilute sulfuric acid at room temperature, a heap leaching of the deposit appeared feasible, aided by the fact that 90%-95%of the rock consists of unreactive and insoluble feld-spars and quartz. The absence of overburden, remarkable consistency of mineralization grade throughout the massive rhyolite, prox-imity （a few km） to a US interstate highway, major rail systems and gas and electricity, temperate climate, and stable political location in the world’s largest economy all enhanced the potential economic appeal of Round Top.

The objective of this article is to demonstrate with examples that the two-sided tie correction does not work well. This correction was developed by Cureton so that Kendall’s tau-type and Spearman’s rho-type formulas for rank-biserial correlation yield the same result when ties are present. However, a correction based on the bracket ties achieves the desired goal, which is demonstrated algebraically and checked with three examples. On the one hand, the 10-element random sample given by Cureton, in which the two-sided tie correction performs well, is taken up. On the other hand, two other examples are given, one with a 7-element random sample and the other with a clinical random sample of 31 participants, in which the two-sided tie correction does not work, but the new correction does. It is concluded that the new corrected formulas coincide with Goodman-Kruskal’s gamma as compared to Glass’ formula that matches Somers’ dY|X or asymmetric measure of association of Y ranking with respect to X dichotomy. The use of this underreported coefficient is suggested, which is very easy to calculate from its equivalence with Kruskal-Wallis’ gamma and Somers’ dY|X.
