Furazolidone-based triple therapy for h pylori gastritis in children

AIM: To evaluate the furazolidone-based triple therapy in children with symptomatic h pylori ***: A prospective and consecutive open trial was carried out. The study included 38 patients with upper digestive symptoms suffi ciently severe to warrant endoscopic investigation. h pylori status was defined based both on histology and on positive 13C-urea breath test. Drug regimen was a seven-day course of omeprazole, clarithromycin and furazolidone (100 mg, 200 mg if over 30 kg) twice daily. Eradication of h pylori was assessed two months after treatment by histology and 13C-urea breath test. Further clinical evaluation was performed 7 d, 2 and 6 mo after the treatment. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients (24 females, 14 males) were included. Their age ranged from 4 to 17.8 (mean 10.9 ± 3.7) years. On intent-to-treat analysis (n = 38), the eradication rate of h pylori was 73.7% (95% CI, 65.2%-82%) whereas in per-protocol analysis (n = 33) it was 84.8% (95% CI, 78.5%-91%). All the patients with duodenal ulcer (n = 7) were successfully treated (100% vs 56.2% with antral nodularity). Side effects were reported in 26 patients (68.4%), mainly vomiting (14/26) and abdominal pain (n = 13). Successfully treated dyspeptic patients showed improvement in 78.9% of h pylori-negative patients after six months and in 50% of h pylori-positive patients after six months of ***: Triple therapy with furazolidone achieves moderate effi cacy in h pylori treatment. The eradicationrate seems to be higher in patients with duodenal ulcer.

The petrology of coal,as determined by the microscopic analysis of organic and inorganic elemental constituents of coal,provides information on its nature and *** is used worldwide in the production of thermal energy and *** the case of high-quality Colombian coals,only limited studies have been carried *** present study presents the geochemical,mineralogical,and petrological characteristics of coal samples collected from Puerto Drummond in Cienaga,Colombia,to predict their potential ***,the ultimate,proximate,petrographic,gross calorific value(GCV),ash fusion temperature,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray fluorescence(XRF),and Thermogravimetric(TG)analyses were employed in this *** petrological analysis reveals that Colombian coals are naturally more abundant in vitrinite(72%)than inertinite(14e23%)*** and aluminosilicate are the main minerals present as fine particles mixed with *** XRD and FTIR analyses show that the most common and dominant minerals are quartz,while gypsum,hematite,calcite and mica occur in lesser *** oxide composition of the coal ashes consists of 51e58%SiO2 and 18e25%Al2O3 as determined by XRF *** correlation and regression analysis,the moisture content shows a reverse correlation with GCV(Regression value of R2¼0.68).This study helps researchers to comprehend the importance of Colombian coals and presents various techniques for characterisation of coals.

Strain Sensitivity Enhancement in Suspended Core Fiber Tapers

Suspended core fiber tapers with different cross sections (with diameters from 70 μm to 120 μm) are produced by filament heating. Before obtaining the taper, the spectral behavior of the suspended core fiber is a multimode interference structure. When the taper is made, an intermodal interference between a few modes is observed. This effect is clearly visible for low taper core dimensions. Since the core and cladding do not collapse, two taper regions exist, one in the core and the other in the cladding. The cladding taper does not affect the light transmission, only the core is reduced to a microtaper. The spectral response of the microtaper based-suspended core fiber is similar to a beat of two interferometers. The strain is applied to the microtaper, and with the reduction in the transverse area, an increase in sensitivity is observed. When the taper is immersed in a liquid with a different index of refraction or subjected to temperature variations, no spectral change occurs.

Proximal sensor-enhanced soil mapping in complex soil-landscape areas of Brazil

Portable X-ray fluorescence(pXRF) spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility(MS) via magnetometer have been increasingly used with terrain variables for digital soil mapping. however, this methodology is still emerging in many countries with tropical soils. The objective of this study was to use proximal soil sensor data associated with terrain variables at varying spatial resolutions to predict soil classes using the Random Forest(RF) algorithm. The study was conducted on a 316-ha area featuring highly variable soil classes and complex soil-landscape relationships in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The overall accuracy and Kappa index were evaluated using soils that were classified at 118 sites, with 90 being used for modeling and 28 for validation. Digital elevation models(DEMs) were created at 5-, 10-, 20-, and 30-m resolutions using contour lines from two sources. The resulting DEMs were processed to generate 12 terrain variables. Total Fe, Ti, and SiO_(2) contents were obtained using pXRF, with MS determined via a magnetometer. Soil class prediction was performed using the RF algorithm. The quality of the soil maps improved when using only the five most important covariates and combining proximal sensor data with terrain variables at different spatial resolutions. The finest spatial resolution did not always provide the most accurate maps. The high soil complexity in the area prevented highly accurate predictions. The most important variables influencing the soil mapping were MS, Fe, and Ti. Proximal sensor data associated with terrain information were successfully used to map Brazilian soils at variable spatial resolutions.

Osteochondral (OC) lesions are characterized by defects in two different zones, the cartilage region and subchondral bone region. These lesions are frequently associated with mechanical instability, as well as osteoarthritic degenerative changes in the knee. The lack of spontaneous healing and the drawbacks of the current treatments have increased the attention from the scientific community to this issue. Different tissue engineering approaches have been attempted using different polymers and different scaffolds’ processing. however, the current conventional techniques do not allow the full control over scaffold fabrication, and in this type of approaches, the tuning ability is the key to success in tissue regeneration. In this sense, the researchers have placed their efforts in the development of solid free-form (SFF) techniques. These techniques allow tuning different properties at the micro–macro scale, creating scaffolds with appropriate features for OC tissue engineering. In this review, it is discussed the current SFF techniques used in OC tissue engineering and presented their promising results and current challenges.

Esophageal atresia (EA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is the most common congenital anomaly of the esophagus. The improvement of survival observed over the previous two decades is multifactorial and largely attributable to advances in neonatal intensive care, neonatal anesthesia, ventilatory and nutritional support, antibiotics, early surgical intervention, surgical materials and techniques. Indeed, mortality is currently limited to those cases with coexisting severe life-threatening anomalies. The diagnosis of EA is most commonly made during the first 24 h of life but may occur either antenatally or may be delayed. The primary surgical correction for EA and TEF is the best option in the absence of severe malformations. There is no ideal replacement for the esophagus and the optimal surgical treatment for patients with long-gap EA is still contro-versial. The primary complications during the postoperative period are leak and stenosis of the anastomosis, gastro-esophageal reflux, esophageal dysmotility, fistula recurrence, respiratory disorders and deformities of the thoracic wall. Data regarding long-term outcomes and follow-ups are limited for patients following EA/TEF repair. The determination of the risk factors for the complicated evolution following EA/TEF repair may positively impact long-term prognoses. Much remains to be studied regarding this condition. This manuscript provides a literature review of the current knowledge regarding EA.

A comprehensive understanding of the complex biogeochemical interactions between organic matter and persistent contaminants in the suspended matter is vital for ecoefficient estuary ***,little is known regarding aeration effects in suspended particulate ***,this study aimed to investigate the effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a Tropical and Eutrophic estuarine *** water with 60 g/L of suspended particulate matter(SPM)was collected from Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,transferred to experimental boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates monitoring included abiotic variables measurements and,determination of total organic matter(TOM),biopolymers composition,bacterial activity,trace metals,and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAhs)*** aeration enhanced dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox potential(Eh).however,from days 0 to 61 the predominant bacterial activities were denitrification and *** transport system activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** summary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial activity,lipids(LIP)and trace metal concentrations,although diminished protein/carbohydrate ratio and PAh *** metals concentration(Ni,Pb,Cu,Cr,Mn,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p h was *** presented toxic values(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p h showed a strong negative correlation with Eh(r=-0.94;ph≤5.9)in marine ecosystems with high loads of toxic trace metals is unsafe for ***,managers must be aware of the environmental and biological risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrophic marine environment.
