We look at the link between climate change and vector-borne diseases in low-and middle-income countries in *** large endemicity and escalating threat of diseases such as malaria and arboviral diseases,intensified by climate change,disproportionately affects vulnerable communities *** highlight the urgency of prioritizing research and development,advocating for robust scientific inquiry to promote adaptation strategies,and the vital role that the next generation of African research leaders will play in addressing these *** significant challenges such as funding shortages within countries,various pan-African-oriented funding bodies such as the African Academy of Sciences,the Africa Research Excellence Fund,the Wellcome Trust,the *** Institutes of Health,and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as initiatives such as the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence and the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association,have empowered(or are empowering)these researchers by supporting capacity building activities,including continental and global networking,skill development,mentoring,and African-led *** article underscores the urgency of increased national investment in research,proposing the establishment of research government agencies to drive evidence-based *** between governments and scientific communities,sustained by pan-African funding bodies,is *** these efforts,African nations are likely to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of their systems and communities by navigating these challenges effectively,fostering scientific excellence and implementing transformative solutions against climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare complication of lower urinary tract infection whose prognosis is conditioned by the delay in treatment. The predisposition of diabetic patients to urinary infections caused by gas-producing bacteria is considered one of the most common factors in the occurrence of emphysematous cystitis. The currently recommended diagnostic test is CT scanning, which has definite value in assessing gas accumulation in the bladder wall and lumen. The authors report the observations of two patients aged 68 and 80 who were treated for emphysematous cystitis complicating diabetes mellitus. The evolution was favorable under treatment with antibiotic therapy, insulin therapy and bladder drainage.

Factors Associated with Mortality in Diabetic Patients with End-Stage Renal Failure Starting Emergency Hemodialysis

Background: Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage chronic kidney disease with poor prognosis in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to determine factors associated with mortality in patients starting dialysis treatment for end-stage chronic renal disease in an emergency context. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study from January 2020 to December 2022 at CHU-B. Data from 79 diabetic patients requiring emergency dialysis were compared with those of 79 non-diabetic patients with an end-stage renal disease requiring emergency dialysis. Data were collected from the Nephrology Department registry. We studied their initial clinical and biological profiles and factors related to mortality. Results: Out of 545 compiled records, 79 diabetic chronic kidney disease patients needing dialysis were included (group 1). A control group of 79 non-diabetic chronic kidney disease patients requiring emergency dialysis was also included (group 2). The average age of patients was 53.5 ± 17 years, and the duration of diabetes at dialysis initiation was 14.8 ± 4.3 years. Twenty-three percent were hypertensive. Fifty-two percent of patients experienced intra-dialytic hypotension. Death occurred in 22% of patients. Results show that age (adjusted OR 1.955;CI: 1.025 - 1.086;p-value: Conclusion: Emergency dialysis in diabetics is associated with unfavorable outcomes in terms of mortality. Despite follow-up, renal involvement remains poorly explored, emphasizing the need for physician awareness.

Nodal user’s demand response based on incentive based programs

This paper describes a practical approach to identify nodal price compensation payment for nodal consumers willing to reduce their energy consumption(consumers’ demand response). The implementation of a nodal reliability service pricing is based on contingency assessment of N-2 order for transmission lines. A representative annualized demand curve is used to reflect the system’s operation condition by seasons. Such curve is used to access the nodal reliability impact trough a whole year in order to determine back-payments(incentive payment) to users for service interruption. The IEEE_RTS 24 nodes system is used to implement the proposed approach.

Analysis of forestry impacts and biodiversity in two Pyrenean forests through a comparison of moth communities （Lepidoptera, Heterocera）

We have compared the biodiversity variations in moth communities between unmanaged forests and commercial forests in a mountainous environment （Pyrenees France）. The aim was to evaluate the impact of forestry activities on moth diversity. The data collected from the insects were analysed with a Bayesian specific similarity index （noted SSP index） and by statistical biodiversity indexes comparison. It was seen that diversity and richness were decreased in the plantation compared to the unmanaged forest. Interestingly, the composition of the communities of moths was shown to be not only related to the presence/absence of host plants, but also to be in relation with changes in the differences in forest architecture （i.e. the relative coverage by the different vegetation levels）. However, the moth community in the commercial forest still has a high capacity to converge with the moth community present in more natural forests. We report here a list of 177 species of moths, providing information on the distribution of some uncommon species, poorly studied as yet in the Pyrenees.

The determination of thermal junction potential difference

A novel method has been designed and exploited to determine the thermal junction potential difference(TJPD) between two acids or alkalies of the same composition but with different temperature. The absolute value of measured TJPD between two strong acids(or alkalies) maintained at different temperatures increases with increasing of the temperature difference between the two electrolytes over the range from 0 to 40 °C. In strong acids, the hot end always has the lower potential while in strong alkalies, the cold end has the lower potential. This is because the ions of fast diffusion rate contribute most to the TJPD. Our results demonstrate the importance of the correction for TJPD in deriving the kinetic parameters when studying the temperature effect on reaction kinetics.

Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry(DEMS)is one of the most powerful techniques for both the mechanistic and kinetic study of complicated electrocatalytic *** can provide information on the nature and yields of the products generated,their production rate,and the structure-activity relationship between the electrocatalysts and the target *** precise calibration of the mass signal is a prerequisite for the accurate evaluation of reaction *** this work,we use the oxidation reactions of CO and HCOOH to demonstrate how certain conditions,such as the flow rate and solution composition,affect the collection efficiency and ionization probability of the species to be *** parameters can affect the determination of the mass calibration constant and the accuracy of the subsequent quantitative DEMS *** show the relationship between the mass calibration constant and the flow rate,and provide strategies for eliminating this and the related problems.

Sources of transcription variation in Plasmodium falciparum

Variation in transcript abundance can contribute to both short-term environmental response and long-term evolutionary *** studies are designed to assess differences in mean transcription levels and do not consider other potentially important and confounding sources of transcriptional *** quantification of variation sources will improve our ability to detect and identify the mechanisms that contribute to genome-wide transcription changes that underpin adaptive *** quantify innate levels of expression variation,we measured m RNA levels for more than 5000 genes in the malaria parasite,Plasmodium falciparum,among clones derived from two parasite strains across biologically and experimentally replicated *** a mixed effects model,we partitioned the total variation among four sources—between strain,within strain,environmental batch effects,and stochastic *** found 646 genes with significant variation attributable to at least one of these *** genes were categorized by their predominant variation source and further examined using gene ontology enrichment analysis to associate function with each source of *** with environmental batch effect and within strain transcript variation may contribute to phenotypic plasticity,while genes with between strain variation may contribute to adaptive responses and processes that lead to parasite strain-specific survival under varied conditions.
