Molecular study of astrovirus, adenovirus and norovirus in community acquired diarrhea in children: One Egyptian center study

Objective: To determine the prevalence of astrovirus, norovirus, adenovirus in children below five years old with diarrhea by multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) along with rotavirus antigen detection by enzyme linked immunosorbant ***: The study was conducted on children below five years old complaining of acute diarrhea. The study included stool examination by molecular method for detection of norovirus, adenovirus and astrovirus by multiplex RT-PCR. Rotavirus antigen was detected in the stool by enzyme linked immunosorbant ***: The study included 100 children below 5 years old with acute *** RT-PCR was positive in 34% of the children. The most frequently detected virus was rotavirus(44%), followed by norovirus(30%), adenovirus(20%) and astrovirus(14%). The clinical symptoms were more significantly associated with viral diarrhea such as fever(P = 0.03), bloody diarrhea(P = 0.025), vomiting(P = 0.000 1) and watery diarrheas(P = 0.05). The frequency of diarrhea with viral pathogen was significantly presented in winter season(39.7%). There were significant frequencies of norovirus and adenovirus in age ranging 1–2 years old(P = 0.04, P = 0.01 respectively).Conclusions: The present study spotlights on the prevalence of viral pathogens as an important etiology in diarrhea in children below five years old. Astrovirus, norovirus and adenovirus are common along with rotavirus in this group of patients. Multiplex PCR leads to improve the laboratory diagnosis of these viruses along with antigen detection method. Further longitudinal studies are required to evaluate the epidemiological data associated with these viruses and for proper management of such drastic infection.

Many historic buildings in old urban centers in Eastern Canada are made of stone masonry reputed to be highly vulnerable to seismic *** risk assessment of stone masonry buildings is therefore the first step in the risk mitigation process to provide adequate planning for retrofit and preservation of historical urban *** paper focuses on development of analytical displacement-based fragility curves reflecting the characteristics of existing stone masonry buildings in Eastern *** old historic center of Quebec City has been selected as a typical study *** standard fragility analysis combines the inelastic spectral displacement,a structure-dependent earthquake intensity measure,and the building damage state correlated to the induced building *** proposed procedure consists of a three-step development process：（1） mechanics-based capacity model,（2） displacement-based damage model and（3） seismic demand *** damage estimation for a uniform hazard scenario of 2% in 50 years probability of exceedance indicates that slight to moderate damage is the most probable damage experienced by these stone masonry *** is also made with fragility curves implicit in the seismic risk assessment tools Hazus and *** shows the highest probability of the occurrence of no to slight damage,whereas the highest probability of extensive and complete damage is predicted with *** comparison shows the importance of the development of fragility curves specific to the generic construction characteristics in the study area and emphasizes the need for critical use of regional risk assessment tools and generated results.

Hydrothermal Characteristics of Blended Cement Pastes Containing Silica Sand Using Cement Kiln Dust as an Activator

The hydrothermal reactivity of silica sand was studied using cement kiln dust (CKD) as an activator in addition to the Portland cement fraction of el-Karnak cement (a blend of ordinary Portland cement and ground sand). Autoclaved EI-Karnak cement pastes were studied at pressures of 0.507, 1.013 and 1.520 MPa of saturated steam with respect to their compressive strength, kinetics of hydrothermal reaction and the phase composition of the formed hydrates. The role of CKD in affecting the physicochemical and mechanical properties of EI-Karnak cement pastes was studied by autoclaving of several pastes containing 5, 7.5, 10 and 20% CKD at a pressure of 1.013 MPa of saturated steam. CKD was added either as a raw CKD (unwashed) or after washing with water (washed CKD). The results of these physicochemical studies obtained could be related as much as possible to the role of CKD (raw or washed) in affecting the hydrothermal reactivity of silica sand in EI-Karnak cement pastes.

Lymphocytic colitis: A clue to bacterial etiology

AIM： To find out the role of bacteria as a possible etiological factor in lymphocytic colitis. METHODS： Twenty patients with histopathological diagnosis of lymphocytic colitis and 10 normal controls were included in this study. Colonoscopic biopsies were obtained from three sites （hepatic and splenic flexures and rectosigmoid region）. Each biopsy was divided into two parts. A fresh part was incubated on special cultures for bacterial growth. The other part was used for the preparation of histologic tissue sections that were examined for the presence of bacteria with the help of Giemsa stain. RESULTS： Culture of tissue biopsies revealed bacterial growth in 18 out of 20 patients with lymphocytic colitis mostly Escherichia coil （14/18）, which was found in all rectosigmoid specimens （14/14）, but only in 8/14 and 6/14 of splenic and hepatic flexure specimens respectively. In two of these cases, E coli was associated with proteus. Proteus was found only in one case, Klebsiella in two cases, and Staphylococcus aureus in one case. In the control group, only 2 out of 10 controls showed the growth of E coli in their biopsy cultures. Histopathology showed rod-shaped bacilli in the tissue sections of 12 out of 14 cases with positive E coli in their specimen＇s culture. None of the controls showed these bacteria in histopathological sections. CONCLUSION： This preliminary study reports an association between E coli and lymphocytic colitis, based on histological and culture observations. Serotyping and molecular studies are in process to assess the role of E coli in the pathogenesis of lymphocytic colitis.

Physico-analytical Studies on Salicylaldehyde Thiosemicarbazone Complexes

The complexes of salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone with Pd, Cu and Ru were prepared. The prepared complexes were characterized by spectroscopic, element and thermal analyses and D.C. conductivity measurements. The antimicrobial activity of all the prepared compounds against gram-positive, gram-negative and fungi was studied. From these studies, it has been obtained that the ligand is bonded to the metals through O, N and S, but to palladium in [Pd (H//2L//2)] Cl//2 only through N and O. Biological studies confirm that the organic effect on both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria is very weak and their complexes have no effect on fungi, but Cu-complex has strong influence on both types of bacteria. Male Breast Cancer:10-Year Experience at Mansoura University Hospital in Egypt

Objective Male breast cancer （MBC） is a rare disease representing less than 1% of all malignancies. The objective of the study is to report clinicopathological characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes of MBC in Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt. Methods This retrospective study focused on male breast cancer patients during 10 years （2000-2009）. The studied variables were data regarding general characteristics of patients, treatment modalities and survival. Results The series included 37 patients （0.8% of all breast cancer）. The median age was 57.7 years （range： 26-86 years）. The main clinical complaint was a mass beneath the areola ill 94.5% of the cases. Most patients had a locally advanced disease. 94.5% of tumors were invasive duct carcinomas. The treatment was essentially surgery in 91.8%, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy （in 89.2%）, hormonal therapy （in 56.7%） and chemotherapy （in 91.8%）. Follow-up period ranged from 6-115 months. Local recurrence occurred in 4 cases and metastasis in 11 cases. The 2-year and 5-year overall survival （OS） rates were 81.6% and 60.5%, respectively. The 2-year and 5-year disease-free survival （DFS） rates were 68.4%, and 52.6%, respectively. OS was not significantly affected by any of the studied parameters. Factors influencing DFS were： T stage （P=0.05）, positive lymph nodes （P=0.043）, metastasis （P=0.004）, and chemotherapy （1＇=0.046）. Conclusions MBC is a rare disease and often diagnosed at a locally advanced stage. The management of male and female breast carcinoma is identical. Future research for better understanding of this disease is needed to improve the management and prognosis of male breast cancer patients.

Obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetic retinopathy: Beyond hyperglycemia

Diabetic retinopathy(DR) is the most feared ocular manifestation of diabetes. DR is characterized by progressive retinal damage that may eventually result in blindness. Clinically, this blindness is caused by progressive damage to the retinal microvasculature, which leads to ischemia, retinal swelling, and neovascularization. Retinopathy is associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with DR being the leading cause of new onset blindness in United States adults. Despite this strong association with diabetes, it must be noted that the development of retinopathy lesions is multifactorial and may occur in individuals without an established history of diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a multifactorial condition of central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, fasting hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance. Although several studies examined the individual components observed in the metabolic syndrome in relation to the development of DR, there is conflicting data as to the association of the metabolic syndrome with the development of retinopathy lesions in nondiabetic subjects. This review will summarize the current literature on the evidence of the metabolic syndrome on retinopathy in subjects with and without an established history of diabetes. This review will also discuss some of the mechanisms through which metabolic syndrome can contribute to the development of retinopathy.

Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationships of Novel Neocryptolepine Derivatives

Herein we reported the synthesis of a novel series of neocryptolepine（5-methyl-5H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoline） derivatives containing different substituents at Cll using methyl 1H-indole-3-carboxylate and N-methylaniline as starting material. The target 21 compounds were evaluated for their axltibacterial activity in vitro against gram-positive bacteria（B, subtilis and S. aureus） and gram-negative bacteria（E, coli and ***）. Almost all the tested compounds showed moderate to high activities against the four bacterial strains at the minimum inhibitory concentrations（MICs） of 1-10μg/mL. The obtained results suggest that part of the novel synthetic neocryptolepine derivatives exhibit significant antibacterial effect against all the tested organisms.

Dust Acoustic Solitary Waves in Saturn F-ring's Region

Effect of hot and cold dust charge on the propagation of dust-acoustic waves （DAWs） in unmagnetized plasma having electrons, singly charged ions, hot and cold dust grains has been investigated. The reductive perturbation method is employed to reduce the basic set of fluid equations to the Kortewege-de Vries （KdV） equation. At the critical hot dusty plasma density Nho, the KdV equation is not appropriate for describing the system. Hence, a set of stretched coordinates is considered to derive the modified KdV equation. It is found that the presence of hot and cold dust charge grains not only significantly modifies the basic properties of solitary structure, but also changes the polarity of the solitary profiles. In the vicinity of the critical hot dusty plasma density Nho, neither KdV nor mKdV equation is appropriate for describing the DAWs. Therefore, a further modified KdV （fmKdV） equation is derived, which admits both soliton and double layer solutions.
