c.rbon sequestration is one of the important ec.system servic.s provided by forested landsc.pes. Dry forests have high potential for c.rbon storage. However, their potential to store and sequester c.rbon is poorly understood in Kenya. Moreover, past attempts to estimate c.rbon stoc. have ignored drylands ec.system heterogeneity. This study assessed the potential of Mukogodo dryland forest-landsc.pe in offsetting c.rbon dioxide through c.rbon sequestration and storage. Four c.rbon pools (above and below ground biomass, soil, dead wood and litter) were analyzed. A total of 51 (400 m2) sample plots were established using stratified-random sampling technique to estimate biomass across six vegetation classes in three landscape types (forest reserve, ranches and conservancies) using nested-plot design. Above ground biomass was determined using generalized multispecies model with diameter at breast height, height and wood density as variables. Below ground, soil, litter and dead wood biomass;carbon stocks and carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq) were estimated using secondary information. The CO2eq was multiplied by current prices of carbon trade to compute carbon sequestration value. Mean ± SE of biomass and carbon was determined across vegetation and landscape types and mean differences tested by one-way Analysis of Variance. Montane forest ec.systems support biodiversity and provide varied ec.system servic.s to adjac.nt and downstream human c.mmunities. However, human-induc.d disturbanc.s are c.mmon in many of these ec.systems, threatening their c.pac.ty to sustain their func.ions. This study assessed the status of woody vegetation and livestoc. use of a Kenyan montane forest 10 years after government-sanc.ioned c.ssation of human enc.oac.ment. The findings c.n inform suitable interventions that support rec.very of abandoned forest settlements subjec.ed to c.ntinuous anthropogenic.disturbanc.s. Selec.ed woody vegetation attributes and livestoc. disturbanc. indic.tors were assessed ac.oss three human-driven disturbanc. regimes (light, moderate and heavy) using stratified-systematic.sampling tec.nique. Data on the extent of c.mmunity dependenc. on forest grazing were c.llec.ed from 381 randomly selec.ed forest adjac.nt households using semi-struc.ured questionnaires. Information on the palatability of plants to livestoc. was obtained from Foc.s Group Disc.ssions. Vegetation data were analyzed using linear mixed models, while desc.iptive analysis was applied on household survey data. A total of 33 woody plant spec.es belonging to 22 families were identified, out of whic. 55% were perc.ived to be unpalatable to livestoc.. Spec.es ric.ness, spec.es diversity, stem density and basal areas dec.ined signific.ntly with inc.easing levels of disturbanc.. Spec.fic.lly, these attributes were 59% - 98% lower in heavily disturbed sites than in moderately and lightly disturbed sites. A vast majority (88%) of the sampled households grazed their livestoc. in the forest throughout the year. Evidenc. from this study indic.tes that intense past and ongoing anthropogenic.disturbanc.s c.used signific.nt negative effec.s on the forest vegetation c.ndition, and lowered its c.pac.ty to rec.ver. Forest managers should prioritize minimizing rec.rrent anthropogenic.disturbanc.s as the forest rec.vers to ensure suc.

The struc.ure and spec.es c.mposition of undisturbed natural forests serve as benc.marks for understanding forest c.rbon storage potential for reduc.d c.rbon emissions. Even though Kenya is seeking to stabilize forest c.ver, reverse degradation and inc.ease forest c.ver through mec.anisms suc. as REDD+, there is relatively little information on inherent forest c.rbon storage potential or its response to disturbanc.. c.mparative studies were undertaken in three remnant fragments of indigenous forests in Taita Hills, Kenya to c.arac.erize the struc.ure and forest c.rbon storage potential of undisturbed, moderately and heavily disturbed sites within these forests. The sensitivity of forest c.rbon storage estimates to different methods of tree biomass estimation were also examined, inc.uding estimates whic. used DBH, tree height and wood density from extrac.ed tree c.res. Disturbanc. altered the forest struc.ure, reduc.d spec.es diversity and dec.eased the c.pac.ty of the forests to sequester c.rbon. The forests’ c.pac.ty to sequester c.rbon reduc.d by between 9.2% and 70.7% depending on the site (forest fragment) and level of disturbanc.. Models with DBH and wood density gave higher quantities of c.rbon of between 0.9% and 44.4% for sites exhibiting different levels of disturbanc.. The present results suggest that disturbanc. had strong influenc. on forest struc.ure, spec.es diversity and c.rbon stoc.s and therefore maintaining the forests’ ec.logic.l integrity over the long-term may prove diffic.lt if the frequenc. and intensity of disturbanc. inc.eases. Moreover, development and implementation of effec.ive mitigation strategies to reduc. c.rbon emissions will require the use of loc.l biomass models sinc. they are ac.urate.

Kenya’s public.forest sec.or plantations have been the main sourc. of roundwood for wood-based industries but several fac.ors have reduc.d its c.pac.ty to meet inc.easing demands, resulting in huge defic.ts. The growth of small-holder forestry over the last three dec.des has demonstrated the potential to supplement the defic.ts. The imposed logging moratorium in public.and c.mmunity forests in 2002-2012 and 2018 not only opened markets for small-holder tree growers but also inc.eased demand pressure from various wood c.nsumers. This paper presents an assessment of the status of farm-based wood resourc.s three years within the latest moratorium period and the potential of farm tree resourc.s to c.mplement wood from public.forest plantations. Data were c.llec.ed from 56 households using semi-struc.ured interviews, key informants interviews, and a rapid assessment of standing and harvested trees from 146 on-farm plots. The main c.mmerc.al tree spec.es found on the farms were;c.pressus lusitanic., Euc.lyptus sp., Grevillea robusta, Pinus patula, and Ac.c.a mearnsii. Euc.lypts were the most planted trees with an average land size of 1.08 ha. The farm tree resourc.s have sustained some level of wood demand sinc. the moratorium, as indic.ted by the high volume of wood harvested. The study found that about 40% of c.rrent wood resourc.s c.nsisted of trees less than 5 years, and most harvests were of small diameter c.asses whic. are essentially juvenile wood and are unsuitable for struc.ural and furniture use. Furthermore, most small-sc.le farmers lac. appropriate silvic.ltural and management knowledge, preferring smaller growing spac.ng as shown by the high planting density of 1659 stems·ha-1 and also use of inferior germ-plasm, with implic.tions on the quality of wood from farms.
